KA 5 gear swap using Z bellhousing; The low down...
evildky replied to datsunlover's topic in Drivetrain
one lil tip, stick with the stock 240sx shifter if you like cut it down but do not use a short throw shifter and cut it down, I got my trans for free, had the hole bored and picked up a short shifter on ebay (mine came with no shifter) for $50 shipped, which stoop way too tall for my liking I cut 3" off it and rethreaded it, it is really hard to get third gear, there is maybe a half an inch difference side to side from 1st to 5th, the thing I hated about my swap is I have an early 71, which used a tranny with a removable bellhousing so i picked up a 76 tranny, and being an early car the trans mount is different, and I had to cut it up to make the new mount, so unless I can find a new early trans crossmember my tranny won't ever go back to OE, also can't remember which was shorter early or alter driveshaft but I used the shorter of the 2 I had and only had 3/4 removed from it (about $90 shortened and balanced) -
I am sorry I just about fell over about the broken 10" mated to a "mild" 305 running 10's in the 1/ 8, was that 305 in a tank or was it running on 6 cylinders?

sounds like your downshifting to first! most cars don't like that, I never downshift to first unless I am completely stopped or autocrossing

wantanabes aka want'a'bes int he 8 spoke your mention is similar to the old school european Minilites, which has been replicated by just about everyone, the newer Konig rewinds (which are about the cheapest), panasport, shelby, superlite and I am sure more, there are differences in them if you look closely, the panasports, minilites, and superlites are the best looking models in my opinion

Does anyone know the bolt pattern for 280zx?
evildky replied to a topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
I am sure you could find it all in a search but to save you the effort bolt circle is 4 x 4.5" aka 4 x 114.3mm offset is like +10? on a 6" wheel, most people just go for the zero offset or use spacers, ps all Z's from 70-83 have interchangable wheels -
what part of Ky he from? I am in Louisville, KY I own a 1300 sqft home with a 4 car garage in 1/10 an acre (read as the garage is larger then the yard) in the city, worth maybe 110K, it's a very old house, in a lower middle class area, it woud rent for about 700 mo. I cant think af a part of town whetre you could rent a house for $400 unless you were setting up a crack house, there was a national survey recently in the local paper showing what you need to make in what cities to afford to live pay rent eat etc, Louisville was way down the list at $11 hr. but that was based on a 1 br apt.

I got the wire kit from them when I did mine, I don't recall how long it took to come but it was worth every penny, you might try a pm on the msefi.com forums, the guy is a regular in the wiring section you could even ask about shipping time there and I bet he responds -
I paid around $1500 for the lincoln 185 6 months or so ago, it came highly recomended from other welders and the shop I get my supplies from, the sad thing is I still can't use the damned thing, havn't had time to get a bud over a play, oh well, I'll get to it

Grassroots Motorsports Magazine did a comparo once, a classic porshe 911, adn jag e type and a modern Honda minivan, the did a drag comparo and an autocross campar, and the scores were close in bith cases but the honda won out, their point was that techknowlogy is in fact a good thing and that the new honda minivan might be able to keep pace with these classic sports cars in the minivan you remember the destination in the jag you remember the drive

lol, thats a good one, don't worry I spend 3 days tracing a fuel issue once casue my car was out of gas, the sender was wired backwards, I am a dorktard, welcome to my world

why not just mount the ecu in the stock location for your 280? I mounted mine in my 240 in the place that the 280 ecu would have been, remember you need the ecu to be grounded, i woudn't worry about shock the things seem pretty decetn for being 22 years old, and if you put it there are you gonna reinstall the heat/AC?, and the polished pulley looks awesome, that just the plain steel polished up? I have the aluminum one which weighs about the same but it's shiney

early cars were 1 piece rubber that snaos into the hole I think they started the metal trim half way through 71 or maybe on the 72 models

I can't remember which inner cover I used? may have used the 240sx cover? but mine didn't have clearance issues, youmight want to try the sx plate and see if that works, and yeah I have the Z front case and the only thing I did was to open up the hole for the 1st second shift rod and I did grind the other holes with a stone just to chamfer the openings a bit -
I am sure size and brand play a large part but I just ordered a set of custom Kodiac's 15 x 7's 3 piece zero offset 4" backspace, steel lug inserts, machined hud, lightened center section for a bit over $1300 (sadly more than I paid for the car) but they are supposed to weigh about 9 lbs each, and it's not that much more the the panasports or revolutions which I had considered but these weigh a lot less

I am unsure what milling you found necesarry for the front case to clear the gears an also the machining of the inside cover? I am running an 240 SX 5 speed in my car for maybe 6 month? I did no machining other than the pilot hole, shifts through all gears just fine, never kicked out of gear or had any binding of any sort? perhaps something got knocked silly when you dropped it? and don't forget your driveshaft, I can't rmember which shaft I used, 71 or 78? but I used the shorter of the 2 and had to cut off the colar that would slip into the Z tranny and shortened the shaft by about .75 inches, it woud go in without shortening but it was wedged also the 24SX uses a few sensore that you'll want to plug or your gonna have a few extra sensors hanging out of your tranny -
I wish you had done this sooner, I'd have bought 2, I got one running but still gotta swap the injectors and see how your new feul maps work out (thanks for those) and I am still not done with the second one, but it looks like more and more people are going for the MSNS anyone thinking of doing this, I'd highly recomend saving yourself the pain in the arse and getting a complete programed unit unit from moby
-
the swaybar mounting holes are the same for both arms, assuming your rear mounted bar uses the same holes as the stock forward mounted units, the mounting indention outs it at the center of the thickness of the arms, it's kinda hard to explain without ilistrating it but your endlinks should be equal length unless your bar mounts are crooked or your not using the stock sway bar mounting holes in the A arms

I almost got the precicion gear unit, it was $590 with about $40 to ship, the guy was checking availability (it would appear they do not keep them in stock but order a few at a time to satisfy demand) they guy has not called me back it's been avoer a week, so today on a whim I went to a local scrapyeard a looked for a Z31 donor just in case and I found one, and the price was much better than I expected, $200 well $212 with tax but they have to unstack the cars and take it out for me but I finally found one after a few years of looking, now I get to replace my VLSD and do the CV shaft conversion
-
ok so to update, I got it running, looks like the hei module was in fact the problem but by the time I had replaced it the plugs had fuel fouled, new plugs and it's running, that;'s my second HEI module, and the car has seen mostly tuning with a max of about 50 miles, edis is looking better all the time
-
so i went at it with my MSnS today, finally figured out how to load (i know it's easy I now know that) moby's newer map (the one that uses the dsm injectors) and the car wouldn't start? swapped maps back still no start, checked it out and I am getting a very weak intermitant spark, I replaced the HEI module no change, replaced the coil which was getting VERY HOT! ( I had left the key on for extended amount of time so i guess it left the thing changing)no change, save for I was minding the key and the new coil didn't get hot I have not changed any of the wiring or components in the car since the last time I drove it maybe a month ago something somewhere is dead any ideas where to look? not the coil or HEI already replaced both, grounds look good the comunications with the MS look good although I have not hooked up the stim to verify yet, HELP ! kinda wishing I had gone SDS
-
my car sees mostly autocross, a bit of street and a bit of drag, so multiple wheel sets is just kinda what I have to deal with, the Z31 wheel needs a spacer, I am not into spacers, I know a lot of people use them with no issue but I perfer stay away from them not to mention I prefer the look of a zero offset wheel as opposed to the tuners positive offset in most modern wheels
-
I have a set of corbeau forza's right now, they touch the door panels, the GTS2 is supposed to be 2 inches narrower and of course adjustable recline which is what I really need
-
C'mon nobody else running 15x7's on the strock bolt circle and offset!?

stock car style wheels.... help
evildky replied to a topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
ok civic's are fun I've owned a coupla honda's the problem they are wrong wheel drive and when you get 200hp in a 2000lb car traction is a serious issue, and a cat back exhaust for a civic will run you $300-800, for an S30 ful header back exhaust $125 and it's way more metal, that kinda kills your serious money issue, I have less money in my S30 and it's faster and handles better then my civic or crx did civic's are however plentifull, they are a modern "hotrod" you take your mom's econobox and put the bigger teg motor in and tweak till happy, much like the old falcon's recieved big blocks in thier day, the civic's have benefitted from 30 years of technology, they are not a "sports car" they are fun out of the box and easily modified, if you want the same car as every other 17 year old dork, half of them have cars that "handle like it's on rails" because they got a coil over kit on ebay and they have no idea what their spring rates are because they didn't know that half the point of coil overs is they are tunable to car and driver preference sorry just kinda bugged me
