lol, it's a pretty easy swap, but out of the blue it seem kinda scary after you get done you'll laugh at how easy it was the instruction used to be stickied here, guess you'll have to search the archivres, trust me everything you need it here
-
I just shreaded mine after a reletive shiort period of time as well, my car had less miles as it's almost exclusively an autocross car, turned out the wron collar was with the trans, I am still running the cfdf pressure plate with a nismo disk and a new collar
-
the KA tranny is ok, I have no idea wht it will handle as I am still small potato's in the relm of big datsun power, I put a cheapo ebay short shifter on mine which I then cut down about 2 inches to sit at the same heitght ad my old 4 spped handle that I had shortened, let me tell you it's a tiny shift now, it's about a 2 inch stroke from first to second and the side side movement from first to fifth is a bout a half an inch, so finding third is a bit tricky as yet, I am sure I'll get a feel for it, also I was thinking of getting the new electric water pump, or am I just being greedy ? anyone use one of them yet?
-
ok so I wet to the dyno saturday, the car brok down on the way, I tried swapping distributors and got nothing, finally found the ignitor to be at fault, set the dist by ear and got on the dyno best hp of my 3 pulls was my second pull @ 216.5 whp best touque of the 3 pulls was my first pull @ 257.3 ftlbs I have a junkyard motor, with no air filter, running stock everything except a boost controller set at 9 psi, electric fan (running),aluminum flywheel mated to a 240sx 5 speed, 2.5" crush bent exhaust (no muffler) jacobs coil, and about 40 psi of fuel pressure, runs rich on the bottom and lean on the top I am thinking with a bit of time to tune out the afm and set the timing it should be good for 220 whp and 260 ftlbs this sound about right ? my next move will be to install my megasquirt and I'd like to pull it again before adding the intercooler to see how much is limited by the stock ecu
-
like I said if you can afford the aeromotive it's a nicer unit, the main reason i switched was because I needed to run new feed and return lines, so I bent them from aluminum and flared them with as fittings (less adapters) and I think it was only about $125 when I got mine, nothing really wrong with the Bosch/MSD but if your worried about the looks then the Aeromotive is the way to go as well
-
the MSD one is actually made by bosch (I got mine from summit was a few bucks cheaper), I had one, I don't care for the way it mount and it doesn'e quite fit where it belongs, the aeromotive is a nice piece if you can afford it, and it bolts to the firewall out of the way

throwout bearing is the one that presses against the tines of the pressure p[late to actuate the clutch, don't know about the 5 speeds but the bearing on the 4 speeds seems to be universal, but there are 3 different collars that the T/O bearing is seated on the pilot bearing sits inside the crankshaft the small part on the tranny input shaft goes into it to keep the trans alighned with the motor, and those are all universal as well (at least with 4 speeds and the ka 5 speed)

whats the biggest drag slick that'll fir under a 280ZX with tokiko springs ? I think 26 was the limit on my 240 but what about the 280Zx and I have stock 15" swastica's I'm wanting to use
-
well I got my KA 5 speed stuffed into my 240 saturday, wasn't too bad, I got the tranny free from a local inot the SX's, got a spare $ speed to remove the front case from a bud in my local Z club, swapped the front case and front bearing from the L trans onto the KA trans (required boring out one fo the shift fork pilots) bought an ebay short shifter for $60 (I cut it down another 2 inches) cut my trans crossmember moved the center section back welded it back together with the propper tilt to match the KA's mount, had my old 240 driveshaft shortened and ballanced for $95, slapepd it all in and for about $150 I have a fifth gear (still working on the speedp I think my cable is shot) if you have thought of this swap it's easy, and inexpensive and a lot easier than finding an L series 5 speed at least it is here in the rust belt
-
it would appear there are 3 different throw out bearing collars but they all use the same bearing, the bearing is pressed onto the collar but with a brass punch and sitting it inside a piece of pip of between the jaws of a vice it's not too hard to get off
-
I recomend the L28ET, the bolt in vs fabricate everything approach will help save your sanity
-
I was gonna do the 2.3 swap, the engine will sit behind the rack but the motor mounts are right where the steering shaft goes, you could use a u-joint in the steering shaft (I didn't like that idea) or you can use an engine plate for solid mounts, I scrapped the project, here are a coupla pic's
-
relax, while the thing wore wierd, turns out I had the worng throwout collar on the trans, I used the one that came with it and it's the shorter one, I just got the longer one, also I abuse mine pretty bad, it's a race car, it sees very little if any street use and when it does see the street I keep doing smokey second gear burnouts, I also am using the 225mm setup for lack of locating the larger flywheel, but I'd say the limits of the CFDF are not what I expected especially after some of the responces in this thread
-
well, I am gonna re-use the centerforce pressure plate and my nismo disk should be in by friday, and my new shortened driveshaft will be done thursday and I just finnished modding the trans mount to fit the KA 5 speed I let you know how it all works out, and dyno day is in 2 weeks so i'll see what I am putting to it, I am guessing only around 200 whp right now
-
well I think the biggest issue was the throw out collar, I used the one that came with the current trans, which is identicle to the early style one that used to be in the car, it looks like I had the wrong collar, which in order to shift I had to have that sucker pushed up against the pressure plate which kept it from clamping all the way, guess I shoulda checked that sucker out before swapping the trannies, oh well, in with the new KA 5speed
-
so what clutch is everyone running? other than custom, what off the shelf unit will hold up to the abuse? the nismo disk's any good ?
-
I just ragged out a centerforce dual friction, and was wandering if anyone has similar issues with them, the flywheel side got shreaded, did I get a bad one? does this happen to others? should I be looking at ACT or Nissan Motorsports?
-
I think the confusion was the stock pistons tend to be good for only 400-450 whp right? so with the forged pistons and maybe shot peened rods that number can be pushed way up, I was soo amazed at SEZ3 to see sooo many cars putting over 400hp to the wheels, if it wasn't in the 11's it was slow, I hope to get there one day, but I am thinking 400 whp will keeop me happy, speed cost maney and I can't afford to go any faster than that
-
I shreaded a centerforce dual friction clutch in a relative short time, as in a few months, the flywheel was surfaced prior to instalation, the car gets very little use pretty much an exclusive autocross car, what bugs me is that the pucked side that goes against the flywheel is where all the damage seems to be, the material seems to have shreaded, anyone have similar issues?
-
actually' date=' the white SS was non-turbo with vlsd. white turbo Z cars had clutch lsd[/quote'] ok just to clear it up a bit, the "88SS" aka "SE" aka "White" aka "Shiro" was a turbo, came only in white with white wheels and recaro's, not every Z31 white in color is a "SS" so if it's an true "SS" it's got a viscous, if it's a late 87-89 turbo reguardless of color it's got a clutch type, if it's N/A it's an open diff
-
I know it's been discussed, I just can't seem to fingd the posts, I SEARCHED ALREADY! that being said, who is it that made the O-Ring furl rial, other than juan, someone made one that mounts better than the one he made who was it ?
-
DO IT ! I thougth about doing that very thing, the SX is a better more modern chassis with better suspension and brakes, the L28ET is super cheap (although a bit heavy) and has awesome power potential, and as far as I can tell it's not been done, and yes it will fit, but not sure about the steering clearance, you can't spit without hitting 8 ricer kids with SR swaps, no-one has the L28ET
-
the best part is that you can also dry your hair with it !

I had no idea some of the A's came with solid lifter pedestals, I have to A's and both are hydraulic, lucky me
