  1. you might want to considder the vg30et, found in 84-89 300zx, pretty much the same motor but with a turbo, they are around 190hp stock, add boost and an I/C and you'll hit 300hp pretty quick, your gonna have a lot of work swapping computers, but I'd think it'd be easier than the vg30de, also they're radily available at junkyards, will bolt to your tranny ad mounts with no problem, any things possible with enough money or know how
  2. the L6 in stock form in the lightweight s30 body is not a slow car, tons of fun, but with time your gonna want more, I assume thats where you are now, modifying theL6 can get some nice numners wether stroking, or a F54 flattop with high comp head, or a bumpy cam, lots of ways to go makes it faster and more fun, as time passes your gonna want more, hopefully by then you'll have gotten some good experience under your belt, and will be able to evaluate the best next step for you, I just think your better off taking it slow instead of buiilding a 4-500 hp monster right away, you'll also likely decide to modify your suspension and brakes along the way, and your less likely to get discouraged by taking on a job that might seem like too much half way through, we all want you to suceed in making your car into what you want, we'd all hate to see another person bite off too much at once, get discouraged and walk away, possible for good, take it slow, learn along the way and you'll be better for it, without having to learn it all at once
  3. some of the tires mentioned here are road race tires and not autocross tires, the both of the kuhmo tires are nice, hoosier is best if you can afford them, the ecstav700 has changed compounds a few times since being introduced, so which batch will effect the results, the newest are supposed to be real nice, the ecsta's are lighter than the victoracers so you can wind them up a hiar quicker, and soon to be released is the ecsta v710 with an all new compound supposed to be next thing to the hoosiers
  4. Not a VQ. VG33. VQ's in pathfinders didn't start until 2001 and were 3.5 L. See this link for more engine help http://www.freshalloy.com/site/features/tech/engines/home.shtml I think the 96 pathfinder still had the vg30, the frontier didn't get the 3.3 till 99, I was thinking the patherfinder got it in 98 ? no ?
  5. wouldn't it be easier to go buy an altima or maxima new or used that came from the factory with the 3.5 ? and I think they were rated around 260hp with the 3.5
  6. I would suggest a modded L6 for now, I remember when I was 17 and thank god I couldn't afford a Z, it would be dead like the rest of the cars I destroyed, but building it and learning from it can give you a lot of knowledge, experience and respect for what you built ! so start small, moded L6, maybe later you can build a nice L28et, and from ther who knows? you might decide to turn it to a 400hp 3.1, or maybe v8, you can alwayschange up, it's a great learning experience, and you don't want to overload yourself or it'll never get done
  7. uh..., they were stailess steel, with silver painter front and rear bumber covers, normals rubberly plastic crap
  8. yeah check with z31.com, also twinturbo.net, I have read on one or both about either a 3.3 or a 3.5 stroker, using I guess the 3.3 or the 3.5 crank ? been a whie details fuzzy
  9. looks very close to the color of my old hardbody, nissan called "Metalic Charchol Pearl" a buddy of mine painted his civic a similar color supposedly a lexus color, very similar
  10. well my bd is novenber the 28th, maybe z's are genetically linked to birth month ? but I got your Fawkes day beat, I was born on thanksgiving day 1974, every 7 years turkey for my birthday, gets old real quick
  11. ok this might be a stupid question, but the 46 bre car was a white car with red tops painted on...right ? or was it a red car with white sides painted on ? I seem to recall seing that it had a white engine bay but can't find any detailed photos of interior and engine bay, got any ?
  12. yeah you can get a floor shifter, the trans has a simple rotating lever moved by a cable, you get the propper floor shifter and run the cable from there, and you can toss the column trans lockout
  13. the f54 came with plat top pistons and the p79 might have had otehr options for head, the n42 came with dished pistons and either the n42 head or the n47 head, I believe the f54 has some extra internal bracing making it desirable for strokers but I can't swear to it
  14. sounds more like the battery, check your connection at the battery and also where the wires attach to the starter and the ground wire attaches to the trans behind the starter, if the connections are good and solid then prolly the starter, normally when a strater goes you only get the click noise and it doesn't engage, although sometimes on chevy and ford engines they can get heat soaked and be very sluggish, but on the L6 they are far from exhaust so it's kinda wierd
  15. yeah what he said, I was thinking turbo but they come with supercharger and I didn't think that was the right designation, but small light and pretty good power
  16. MSA has new gunmetal Panasports with a polished lip, maybe not the top of everyones list but has me wanting a set, they only have them in a 16x7, I assume this will clear the OE strut housings and springs ? anyone confirm they will fit without coil overs ?
  17. how bout the 4A-GET not sure if thats the right designation , but the turbo injected version of the 4A-G, small, light, and and crazy power potential, and you'll still have a yota heart beating in the yota
  18. the mazda MX-3 also has some great seats, kinda like del-sol seats only more comfortable and I'd dare say more supportive
  19. you mean Z31, tons of info at z31.com be rehashed many times there
  20. the 200zr I believe just has a diferent hood, go to z31.com lots of great z31 info there
  21. thats what it was they had the vg30det in the 89 jap spec 300zx fairlady, they seem to be readily available from importers, might have come in other cars as well
  22. I was gonna swap an 87 2.3t into my 71 but changed my ming it's now going into an 87 starlet, they are great and dependable motors, they weigh if I recall right about 325lbs, not a tank but no lightweight either, in the 71 there was a clearance issue with the steering column, I coul have added an extra u-joint to the steering arm but just didn't care for the idea, not sure if you'd have similar issues on the sx or not, check out turboford.org, tons of info on these lil motors there
  23. you might want to check on z31.com I believe the vg30de and vg30dett were the engine options offered on the 89 300zx fairlady there, could be wrong but seems to be the way I recall reading it, and if you are still looking for the motor you might as well go for the dett, the yards around here don't charge much more for the turbo motor, just an idea
  24. 4 lug truck axles...really I did not know that, and even some with the lsd, I'll have to check that out, thx for the suggestion
