  1. *shudders* I'll be honest, I would ONLY use cosmo if the head was going into storage for a LONG time. I honestly can't imagine trying to clean a head that had been coated in comsmoline. Hard enough getting all of it off a rifle, but then you can atleast see EVERYTHING....
  2. Tony, how much of the decision to use EFI on a rally car was because of reliability/power, and how much of it was to prevent fuel starvation/over rich?
  3. Does anyone know what the largest single throat sidedraft carbs are? It seems like it would be a way to make draw through turbos easier. (Yes, I know that most people don't like the draw through setup, but w/e). I know that with dual throats there are 45's and 50's, but so far the only single throats that I've seen are 3X motorcycle carbs...
  4. I'd say if you ever have to replace the head gasket, you might as well just rebuild the engine to the specs that you want it *shrugs*. Then you can choose whichever head gasket you want.
  5. Jesus, the carbs alone are worth double what you paid for the cars. Do you mean building a blow through turbo setup? It's been done, but Tony D will tell you to skip it and just build a screaming L28et for the same cost. the real issue from my reading with building a L28t engine with carbs is finding the intake side equipment. Either it's a bad design (like the cartech), or you can't find them (SK, HKS, etc). If I got those two cars, I would pull the carbs, replace them with some cheaper carbs, then flip the '69 (or part it out to collectors). edit: Actually, if either of those cars has AC, I know someone in SD that'll buy one of them for a good price if it runs well. PM me if you decide to get rid of one
  6. Interesting little engineering exercise: To bad he couldn't make one to fit into a Z
  7. The PO of my Z actually converted it to run cables already . I'll take a look at switching the Z to electronic, but to me having a cable linkage is one more thing that makes the car easier to maintain, since it's easy to tell if a cable link isn't working, while on a e-throttle if it goes bad it could be hard to figure out why. Also, I haven't liked the feel or response of any e-throttle I've ever driven :/
  8. Ok, cool, thx. Actually, I saw that LS engines were e-throttles (which I'll be honest, pisses me off ), but Holley makes a drop in TB replacement that converts it to cable. Sure, it's expensive, but I'd pay that to get a cable throttle on it.
  9. So.....what kind of mileage do you get, and how much per gallon/liter
  10. I know, stupid, but I don't know much about LSx engines: Can ANY LS engine be fit into a Z? And where do people get the mounts for them?
  11. Without knowing more about the specific situation, it sounds like you need to clean the heads up before you start running them. If there is old gas in the tank, you probably aren't rebuilding the motors before you use them, correct? If that's the case, it probably is just the age of the motor and parts that is causing this. My advice is just tear a motor down completely, do a rebuild, and then you should be good to go.
  12. Anyone know how much those are? Seems like it could be fun to slap onto a junkyard parts motor...
  13. I'd say clean up the body first, since that will be hardest to do once everything else is done. Then just get it running, then interior.
  14. John, I've seen some people say that it should be outlet->thermostat->cooler->filter->block, does it really matter what order it is in? And if so, what are the advantages and disadvantages of each setup? Also, is it worth getting a fan for the oil cooler?
  15. I'd actually say it's high for CA, since I can find them in low rust condition with the engine sometimes running for about a grand, but that's deff a good price for florida it seems.
  16. ok, so for the piping, seems that just doing the reverse of what I said (basically) is fine? So a turbo timer keeps the engine running until it cools off enough? Do you have a place I could read up on water cooled turbos? I see a bunch of threads in various forums on the subject, but they are all of the 'how do I actually hook this up' variety, rather than the design of them, etc.
  17. I'm planning out my L30et build right now, and I was wondering if anybody could help with some the two (or two and a half) questions I can't seem to answer. The first: How are oil coolers usually tied into the oil circuit? In my case, I have an AMSOil dual filter setup, so would it be best to just hook the oil in line for the cooler to the out line for the filters, and then out from the cooler to where the filter setup currently dumps back into the block? Second: I'm worried about the turbo burning the oil up and turning it to coke when I shut the engine down. I know that there are basically two methods of dealing with this: letting the car idle for a few minutes to let the temps come down, or hookup some kind of pump/thermostat to continue to circulate the oil untill there isn't a risk anymore. I often don't have time to sit in the car waiting for it to idle, so what is the best way to go about hooking up some kind of cooldown system to the turbo? Second (and a half): Since I'm writing this anyway, how are the oil lines usually hooked up to the turbo when coming from a P90 head?
  18. I guess I missed something about it. How so?
  19. As a point of interest, how big is the engine bay, and what are the mounts going to be designed for? Presumably one of the I6 motors originally, but V8s?
  20. JohnC, don't suppose you know anywhere that won't charge the (nearly) grand that Stahl wants direct?
  21. stock location. Though to be honest I haven't really thought about that at all.
  22. So this isn't a 'which brand is best' thread, but rather, within reason (ie, no open headers), what kind of exhaust system would you run on a L30? I'm trying to figure out what I want for mine, so I'm looking for ideas/advice
  23. So what exactly to people mean when they talk about o-ringing an engine? I *think* I get the basic concept of using o-rings instead of a gasket around the cylinders, but what do people do where the rest of the head and the block meet? And how long do they hold up? Thanks for the information.
  24. I think the number one thing to remember about carbs is that Seafoam is your friend. Nice car, I can't imagine picking a racer as my first Z though.
