  1. I looked at Tire Rack and see your problem. However, when I switched to 245-50-16 the options are almost endless. You may try looking for the smallest of the 50 series tires. You may find a set to your liking that is almost the same actual size and/or will fit as the 45 series tires you want. Tires of the same size are not the same size from manufacture to manufacture. Sometimes the same brands different models are not even the same size. Tire Rack has the exact measurements vs brand measurements that you can evaluate. Tire availability is a must. Changing body modifications to fit a one time tire is senseless.
  2. Not to offend anyone and not stating that my opinion is the correct one, but icapture, your opinion needs some camber adjustment.
  3. Bahrain240z, Your work came out very nice. I noticed the smoothed lines under the rear bumper. I like the polished stainless steel duel muffler. Have you put lowering springs on yet? From the pictures it appears that may be you haven't.
  4. If it only turns 1600 at those speeds here is a simple solution - Drive faster. I like the solution.
  5. It sounds like grumpyvette is getting you dialed in on the carb end of things. Which sounds like were you need to be. However, when you are done with that you may look at running taller gears in the rear end. With the kind of low end torque a 383 makes you could drop 500 to 900 RPM at cruising speeds and that would help also. I replaced a 350 (250 hp) in my Classic Century Resorter boat with a 388 that sounds similar to your 383. Prior to the rebuild I could pull skiers all weekend long on a 3 day weekend and still have a 1/4 of a tank left. With the 388 (430 hp) I can get one day and the next morning skiing in before heading for a refill. Horse power cost money, my craving is usually beyond my wallet. I do think grumpy's estimates are obtainable and that most of your gains will come through his suggestions.
  6. I also was thinking the same as Jon and Phar. However, the book How to HOTROD & RACE YOUR DATSUN 1994 By Bob Waar. is a era correct book that has all of the old factory optional components listed that were and are available through Datsun/Nissan Competition. If they were dealer options and or factory race parts you will probably be able to get away with it. As long as there are not any classic Datsun freaks were you are registering the car, I would think it should pass easily. Breaks and suspension do not add up to a large percent of the car. G noses and ZG flair are all factory parts that were available through Nissan and much more. The book is a cheap way to check things out and if any questions are raised, you have the book to show anyone who might question you the factory Nissan parts numbers.:
  7. Found some more detail shots. The grill has had slats added to fill up the area below the bumper. The gas tank filler cap with re-plated parts and new hardware.
  8. It sounds good and solid. I am assuming that it is an electronic issue that shut it down? It sounded to good for anything else to have shut it down. Minor set back, probably already resolved. I was excited to hear it run.
  9. I got mine from the POR15 web page. Remember, humidity is a key factor in drying time with this paint. High humidity causes it to dry fast. Low humidity and the paint will remain tacky. I live in the High desert (low humidity) and my engine block was still tacky for 45 days until the first rain storm, then it hardened up.
  10. jt1, I honestly don't know about the tracking. This thing coming together finally has me just wanting to sit and stare at it. I want to touch it. I want to be left alone with it. I know how you feel. All the time planning, worrying, distance between the shop and home, expense. We had two shows we were planning on being at that were at the other end of California on 5-24-2009 and 5-25-2009. On 5-22-2009 my car fired up for the first time at 5:30 pm. The rest of the car was complete with exception of mounting the seats and sliding the stereo head unit in place. Well, the wiring harness wound up being in the way of the stereo. So apart came the console fuse box included. There was no time for pictures and videos. At 2:30 AM on 5-23-2009 we packed it in for the night. Back at the shop at 8:00 packed and ready for travel. Finalized the jetting on the carbs, attended to minor details, took two laps around the shop and put the car on a trailer ready to pull an all night drive to Solvang Calif for the Datsun Roadster show 5-24-2009. We arrived in Solvang at 2:30 Am 5-24-2009. Showed the car that day. Put the Z back on the trailer and headed for Orange county and the MSA West Coast Z Nationals. I am from the mountains and not use to city driving especially when my new car is on a trailer behind me. However, the neatest event of the whole trip was when driving between Solvang and Orange a guy in a black Viper coupe pulled up along side me and fully checked out my car. Then, gave me a big thumbs up. Then he went on by and turned around in the car and stuck his thumb up in the back window again. All this time I was worried that you may show up at the MSA show and have a nicer car than me. Talk about STRESS. I do drive my car. For the first six months, I woke up with or before the sun came up on weekends and drove all over. Always worried about the other drivers and deer. My wife, now refers to my car as the other woman. I was never in bed when she awoke last spring and summer, I was out enjoying my car. Sorry for the long reminisce, but my car is in the garage for the winter as we have snow and gravel on the roads. I miss driving my car. I did start it up yesterday and listen to the motor.
  11. I like the gold also. With your interior the gold colored wheels will set the entire car off perfectly, as if it was all planned that way. I have seen two cars that frends of mine have had with that same color scheem on the exterior, beatiful, very classy. One of the cars had a tan interior and it looked better than the car with a black interior as an entire package. As your inrerior is over the top and tan, gold will by the way to go.
  12. Without snow for over a week the roads were dry enough to back the Z out of the garage. Well, OK, I made a couple laps around town and left some rubber on the road.
  13. I added pictures to the movie so there are full body shots with the movie.
  14. I do not have that tire size. However, I have seen 205-60-14 fit on a stock car without problems. The tires I saw, were Yokohama ES100 on the car. If they have your size The Tire Rack is doing a close out on them right now.
  15. 205-60-14 would look very nice and you would not have ware issues related to the tire being to wide. They look really fat on a 14 in. wheel. Old school cool.
  16. This is a problem and the factory seals are the only ones that fit properly. I had heard how hard the factory seals were to find four or five yaers ago when I started purchasing parts for my rebuild. They were very hard to find at that time. But I found a set at Courtsey Nissan in Texas. I never looked at them closely. As the car build was finishing and we installed them. We found out that someone had rebagged a left side door seal in a bag marked rigt side. So I had previously purchased a complete weather stripping kit and had an after market right side door seal. As the factorys are not available, we installed the after market brand from MSA on the right side and yes it takes a precisly placed hand on the door and a slaaaaam to get it shut. However, my left side with the factoty seal closes fine. I understand that with time and heat, thing will relax (compress) and things will eventually fit. I am still waiting it has been eight months with out much heat exposier.
  17. Your car looks beautiful, nice work. I also like the gold wheels with the orange body. The BRE spoilers stay true to the era. The modern wheels look great. Check your tire clearence to the lower front valence when the wheels are turned. Trimming of the lower front valence may be needed. My car was orange with gold centered Enkie 92 since 1987. As many have infered here, that they were surprised that the color combo looked so good togather. Most people that saw my car thought the color combo looked great. Every once in a while someone would say, you need to change the wheels to silver or black, but not often. I struggled with the decision to change the color. First, I bead blasted the Enkies to natural silver centers and put them back on the car and that also looked good but not as stand out as the gold. If, I changed the color it would be a light color to help deal with the heat from the sun. I went ahead and took the big step to change the color which included media blasting. I went silver (Liquid platnum, K-23) and I love the results. However, I do miss the old color pattern. Enjoy
  18. If you are refering to the November 1986 issue of Car and Driver I am holding a copy as I am writing this. As bradyzq stated to a tee (good memery) An orange Z with all the goodies. Titled (Reader's Revenge "So you think your golden oldie delivers more smiles per mile, Mr. Degarzia? Prove it." The car is a 1971 240z compaired to a 1996 300zx Turbo. The 240Z had a 2753 cc low compression long block bolted to his early era head. There is a Racer Brown cam, competition valves and springs, triple Mikuni 44PHH, Header to a 2.5 inch pipe with a Supertrap. C/D estimates 155 hp @ 6000 150 lb-ft @4000. 0-60 mph. in 6.6, 0-100 in 18.7, 1/4-mile 14.9 @91 mph. With the fat sticky Yokohama A001-R in 225-60-14 had a road holding 300 ft. skidpad, G 0.89, 1000 ft. slalom, mph 62.8) ( Reader's Revenge. Ceppos, R. Nov. 1986 Car and Driver,) My first rebuild of my car many years ago was a combo of How to Hotrod you Datsun/Nissan and this article. I used a 240 block and Webers, I had gold centered Enkie 92 15x7 with Yokohama 195-60-15 and a Supertrap. I was temporarly living in Bellingham WA when I purchased my car In Calif. My room mate said I should go to the libary to do reasearch on my Z. So I went to the libary. When I walked in, there was a cart with magazines on it being given away. The Nov 1986 Car and Driver magizine was there. I went in and read the article and thought , that is what I want to do to my car. The magazine has been with me ever since. See picture, it is the best digital picture I have of the car I that state.
  19. In your area, the south, I do not suspect a freeze plug issue though it is possible. If you are not able to locate the missing fluid as it sounds. Then it would be getting into the cylinders as many have suggested above and a cracked head is most likly the culpret. There are other areas to check such as a warped head or deck. Then, if the fluid is making it's way to the oil pan unpresurized there is a freeze plug on the inside of the block, that if leaking will fill the oil pan. From the sound of the thred the coolant is disapearing. Then it must be in vapor and that means it is getting to the cylinders. So, you return to a cracked head as the issue and many others have suggested how to go about this issue. Secondly a warped head is more likly than a warped deck, so check the head with a straight edge. If this is the issue. It needs to be shaved.
  20. I did that too. I figured that I would spend between $20,000 and $24,000 for the total build and if I really splurged it might get to $30,000. How ever if you take your figure and multiply it by 6 then you would end up where I did, conservativtly. The amount you spend depends on your expectations.
  21. I finally took the time to become a youtube user. I figured out how to film, make a movie, post to youtube, and give an address to go and find the video. It snowed four inches yesterday and it is cold so the car is remaining in the garage and condensation is visiable from the tail pipe.
  22. The Recaros are XR, I think or XL models, custom ulpolstered. They came as an option in BMW M3s in the late 1980s. Comfort and style is second to none. There are probally full race seats that are more supportive but you may not want to be in them for hours on end. Yes, the 240Z seat rails are to tall. The sitting section of the Recaro seat is thicker than the sitting section of a stock 240Z seat. So, in order to keep the Recaros near the stock seat height the mounting rails needs to be lower than the stock 240Z seat rails. The 510 rails are flat.
  23. ROVdriver, I agree with Blakt Out . That is a beatiful car. Love the interior, best I have seen, very tastfully done. I like it better than mine. I was at the West Coast Z Nationals 2009 and your interior is beyond anything that I saw there.
  24. These pictures may, or may not help, they are shot while the Recaros are installed in the car. It was hard to get a good shot. These are modified 510 seat rails. They are flat and do not raise the seats from the stock height and allow for the fore/aft adjustment to work. However the knob for micro tilt of the seat back does hit the transmission tunnel when it is moved back beyond were I use them, and I am 5 ft.8 in. tall. They would most likly work fine up to 5 ft. 10 in. tall, after that you would need to break out the hammer. The seats provide amazing comfort and support. I am now offically spoiled and I do not care to sit in anything else.
  25. With the title I thought the picture was going to be of the new BMW, most likly to be a new Z coupe. Then when I saw the picture and instantly said TRV.
