  1. There are a lot of Jeeps here. 88 YJ- My daughter took it to university 93 Grand Cherokee - My parts fetcher 97 Grand Cherokee - The wife's grocery fetcher 93 Pracidia - fails to move
  2. I don’t know tbs. I have welded up a lot of weird stuff, but this looks like a challenge. The metal in the casting should take a decent weld. I have modified many castings in the past. Some are dirty alunimum and others are great. You wouldn’t think a head would be made from scrap. The oil lines on a Jag are external, so that part is possible. I don’t know a thing about lasers. How are you going to weld the interior parts of the water jacket?
  3. PS: A section on tools would be nice. I don't know how others feel, but we could let in some advertisers and generate some revenues for the board.
  4. I have had many good years with my Lincoln Square Wave 175. On the other hand I have experienced and heard good things about the Miller and ESAB. It boils down to what you want and can afford, like you say. You can do soooo much more when you have a Tig. It changes your whole perception of mechanics.
  5. The gun and knife attitude in Canada is about the same as Neil in OZ. So we have a lot more stabbings and beatings. We still have guns we just don’t point them at each other…not yet. I do have two large noisy dogs. My place is at the far end of a very quite neighbourhood. When a car comes down the street people take notice. Everyone knows everyone else. It is an awesome shock to all. My teenaged kids are taking it in stride much to my surprise. I guess coming up from a crappy area has left them some what street smart. My lady and I just feel that have been slapped in the face by the closeness of a violent act in a place where we thought we could feel complacent. I guess you can never drop your guard. Too bad.
  6. Hey Rufus: I cut mine origional quarters just above the line running from the door handle back to the tail lights. The idea is that the ‘glass panel will carry no part of the stress. The car should still be structurally sound and triangulated after your cut. I think you might have problems if you cut too far up. If your panels go as far as you say there might be a fit problem with the metal still in place. My quarters ended at, but not in the chanel for the hatch. I can't help you there. It's your call.
  7. Hey Gents: I’m kind of pissed off today. The kid across the street was murdered last night and his brother cut up pretty bad. I don’t know the details. I can just imagine what is going on in that house now on an emotional level. But it is one of those things you don’t expect around here. We have had four pot houses busted on my street in the past year. Eight in the neighbourhood. They don’t bother me much because those in residence usually keep a very low profile. But this killing sh!t. I have come up from some very crappy areas. I have had to step over drunk and bleeding people on my way to school. I have worked my ass off for the past twenty five years and moved into an upscale yuppie area just so my family would not have to be exposed to this kind of thing. As I sit here now the place is taped off and the evidence van and TV crews are in place. I’m not naive or anything. I know this stuff happens. Just not in my controlled corner of the word…..it sucks.
  8. Probably the best and cheapest air tool for the job is the air chisel. The chisel to use is the one with the end that looks like someone flipping you the bird, a similar look to the sheet metal nibbler. Buy two, one always breaks half way through the job. Second tool of choice is the air cut off wheel… and a broom.
  9. Hi Don: I was afraid that the seam would open up as well. It is necessary to keep the seam/ metal over lap to a minimum to avoid the cracking that will result from the inevitable thermal expansion and corrosion. The area of overlap on the V12Z is confined to the small section on the top of the rear pillar. The size of about 2 or 3 inches. The wheel wells are ‘glassed from behind. The panels I used were full replace parts, not patch panels. The attachment points are the same as the originals. I have no idea where you could get some today. I know of a of and epoxy paste they sell up here for bonding panels but it would have a different name south of the border. You could try sourcing out a Corvette shop or a boat supply store.
  10. Hey Rufus: I removed my old quarters to the point where it would not interfere with the structure of the car. Then installed ‘full’ quarters on by removing the paint and grinding the metal to a coarse surface. The holes for the rivets were pre drilled. A layer of glass was put down on the metal, then the panel on top and then the counter sunk rivets were popped. This was done on a cool day to give the necessary time to pop all the rivets before the resin gelled. The area was then heated for a complete cure. I epoxied over the rivets then did the bondo thing. The only problem encountered, is that the rivets show up under the paint. Even after two repaints. They do something to the metal flake. In hind sight I should have used sheet metal screws. Then removed them after the resin had cured. Hope this helps some. No cracks after 19 years. [edit] It is best to use stainless rivets (available at boat stores) or it will bust out like a suitor on prom night. The worked on area is a lighter grey along the top of the rear quarter.
  11. I love it. You guys remember the races you’ve won. The ones that stick out in my mind are the times I watched the taillights sail away. A healthy GN Buick and the newer turbo Porsche. I avoided even making eye contact with the Viper driver. But when I know I can win, I usually mess with their heads and let them win for a bit. Then I gouge on it. My most embarrassing moment was in my V8 Pinto. I lost to a BB ’66 Vette who let me win for a bit then smoked the tires at 60mph. After that I had to dump my girl friend to eliminate the laughter from that side if the car.
  12. I’m guilty of working on the car as well. The weather has been so nice all my time is spent out doors or in the shop. It's been the first time I've seen the snow off my street since New Years.
  13. 340 with X heads, dual AFBs and a 4spd. Probably could be done.
  14. Man…I though we had all the altered brain cells on this sight…That was something different.
  15. Hey Loren: You could get a web sight up so we might see the rest of that awesome car. Please.
  16. ... oh yea the guy may do all his own work, but has 20K tied up in tools to help him...nothing wrong with that..just something to consider when starting a large project. Some people walk into my shop/garage look at the tool cabinets, machine tools, lathe and welders and ask “what the hell is all this?†It’s a life support system for a V12Z. What they don’t see is a library full of books or a hard drive crammed full of any useful tid-bit that might be needed later. I don’t have the funds to send out work. I try to do it ALL my self. What I haven’t spent on the car has been spent on tools or knowledge. Ether way this is a costly hobby in the end. The cost of what I have in the car is way under 10K. But the shop is insured for 25K.
  17. Thanks Gentlemen: This information is great. I am rebuilding the front end, on a ’71, completely as it has not been done for many years. The system that is on the Z now works well so there will be little in the way of changes or upgrades. There is just some concern as to the condition of some of the critical parts that should be addressed as there has been many years of happy abuse and some corrosion issues. I have a line on some quality stock replacement parts and wish to pick them up. Thanks again.
  18. Thanks for the ride Jon.: Now we know why they have that bar on the passenger side door! I know I could have spent the afternoon picking up all those cones. Good driving!
  19. Just a quick question…are all first generation Z, front, stamped steel, lower control arms all the same?
  20. dot

    Pure Rice vid.

I seem to recall that car on a thread early last year. Yes the wing is in poor taste but the car was turning some awesome times. Turbo V8 as I remember. The wing is probably for the suckers bet.
