check that Jersey guy out, he ran a low 13 with no ic and 10psi on stock everything in a 240z, man that extra 400 some odd lbs from the 280z-zx is really starting to show. that low 13 is one good piece of drivin.. i know guys that dyno 280-300hp to the wheels with hybrid turbos and a bunch more stuff that run the exact same times, and mph!!!!! if it werent for the video-id holler BS in a minute. I basically walked my car into a high 14, no IC and 7psi in 83 degree weather, and a hatch full of tools, a 3 ton jack, 10inch bazooka sub, and clothes. i know a mid 14 is possible once i empty that stuff out, and a low 14 is possible when i strap the DR's on one time and launch the sucker, im looking for a mid-high 13 and close to 100mph once i turn up boost, now I have FMIC. ill officially close the summer session on this car when i do that, and go into almost strictly body work, and make a 70s car, well, look like a 70s car. in a 240z, if youre not afraid to flog it and you do your install right and youre efi is rockin, it looks like 12s should be kinda easy with stock management running well, see how long you can keep the positive cable attached.

hmmm, yeah i can see the t5 being a good combo with the 3.54 rear right now i run 3.54 with the 82na trans, and its the widest gear spread known to man, it feels like im in each gear for hours, i bearly get it into fourth down the track, last time i went i held it in third for a couple runs, and tried fourth once or twice, I am really easy on putting shock loads on the trans too though. my gearing is a bit off, but the car is still a gang of fun to drive around town and on the freeway. my tranny was definitely meant for a 3.9 back there thats for sure, its geared very WIDE. im not hard on my tranny at all, i mainly ran my car for mph, to see where im at, no launching, and no hard shifting, so i think it will last a while. for reference, what did you have to do to run the t5 in terms of the mounts and driveshaft. i have a t5 and another NA tranny in storage with the xmember and the driveshaft from my donor car, and would like to run it someday, i think its a better geared for the 3.54 rear gear, since its geared closer vs. the wide gearing of the late NA trans. did you slot the holes for the mount, or did you weld on new ears entirely-what about the x member, what did you have to do there? using the stock mustang tranny is a good idea too, having driven a few 5.0s its a little smoother shifting than the nissan t5. also, i get that weird noise in nuetral with my t5 in my zxt as well, is that a normal thing? i thought my tranny might be getting old, and was too lazy to get down there and check it out, yours makes the same noise with synthetic lube? GOOD anyways great times on that car, and hope to see it get even quicker.

i love it when that happens. everynow and again with my old red v8z, someone once asked me "what year ferrari is that" you know what i said "1972" reminds of me of this one time: i used to work at a coffee shop and used to open the place at 6am, and would always park my "ferrari" right in front and put a orange cone in front of it so people couldnt take out my hood with a parralell parking mishap, and i could constantly keep my eye on it. girl, or woman i should say, comes walking in, and keeps staring at me, then the car, me then the car. i should have never started the conversation. started talking to her about something, and she asks me for my number. she said she hadnt seen that many old "porsches" around and asks me how i can afford something like that, and we talk for a while, about what she does and what not. she looks like 20-something, she was freaking 32 years old, i was about 21 at the time, she told me how old she was and i made her ID verify that. (FIONA MA, 32, hair stylist on 24th and Irving street in San Francisco CA.) she calls me that night from artichoke joes (a casino about 20miles south of sf) and i go to pick her up. (man i shoulda known not to mess with her, the signs were there from the start) and we go downtown and get some drinks, she keeps trippin that the "porsche" runs so hard, i was driving like a complete lunatic anyways, im getting the right signals and getting away with way too much grope, so i end up going to the house and blastin, right? the next morning i take her back to her house, and she starts asking me for money, saying she had just borrowed money from her ex boyfriend to get an abortion! she asks me for 400 bucks to loan her until next week, thats when i made up an excuse to go home and gave her about 200 foot of fishtail sideways black bacon strips up the block, ah the muncie four speed clutchless second gear shots, man i miss that car sometimes. never heard from her again, didnt call her either. this was the only time a car ever got me the girl, and it ended up she was a gold diggin skeezoid, chickenhead hey it happened, and it all started with talk about my "porsche" be careful players.

i have both a 280zt and an 83zxt that i alternately drive on a daily basis so i jump from the late nissan trans in my 280 to the zxt t5 all the time, and whenever im in the zxt, i feel like shifting is much stiffer and balky, and the throw feels like my arm is going into the backseat, but it does feel strong as heck, you can use a mustang short shifter and im sure that goes away. im sure nissan, and their habit of overengineering their cars, used the gearing of the t5 to pull the big zxt off the line with that deep first, and to hold up with fast driving and harder life in the heavier car. it should ultimately be stronger than the nissan transmission, how much is anyones guess. i run mobil 1 synthetic gear lube in my nissan trans, and have had no problems whatsoever from it, it engages a lot smoother than the t5. i do like the gearing of the t5 better though, and if it were a more common Junkyard trans, i would definitely use it. thats my main issue with the t5, availability is pretty scarce, and takes some mods to get it in a early car, which isnt a big issue at all i dont think i just like the availablity and simplicity of both the early nissan and late nissan trans. the t5 will shift real good with a hurst short shifter or similar, and either nissan or the borg warner will hold up fine i think. i say dont pull out the nissan trans until you prove it to be the weak link, but thats just me.

good job. the tire shredding has to be the thing i miss the most about my v8z i mean, this traction thing i got going is nice, but man i miss sidestepping the clutch and watching everything in back of you dissappear.

i used to have a b16a 92 civic back in 96, when it was actually "rare" to see them on the street. it was bad ass, i thought it had heat at the time, i was killin the entire honda family pretty good. a good friend and i both had the b16a civics mobbin, pretty quick car, still, no torque though, but fun to spin it to 9k and punk other hondas with. it had every bolt on imaginable and a roll cage, another rare sight to see in 1996. man that car had a frekin 5" exhaust tip!!! im very happy i have no pictures of that car, believe me. arent the 5th gen preludes faster than the 4th gen ones?

hey i can get you warehouse space to work on your car, bad news is that its in SF.

intercoolin aint easy......but it sure is nice.

going out to fix that guage now. update soon, maybe even post a photo. -
thats nuts, preludes really are supposed to be that fast, i checked, my buddy has whooped on preludes before though, thats nuts, i just assumed they were slower than that because i havent seen one yet that looked like it was going that fast. they dont feel that fast thats for sure, they do rev like a mofo though, i used to cruise my buddies 2000 sh at around 5k all the time, he had a crazy stereo system in that car, so i couldnt hear it. i like driving that car, it feels completely gutless with the lack of torque, but reving that sucker to 8500 is wild!

what size K&N filter do I want for cold air intake
fl327 replied to jmead's topic in 6 Cylinder Z Forums
how does it come out into the front of the car, does it make a 90 degree bend and point towards the passenger side of the car, if so, you can run any air filter, i assume its a 3" inlet right? i would use one for a mustang 5.0 , they are HUGE. i saw a zx with one once that was like a foot and a half long!!!! i would like to run one like this someday, but they are dang expensive, like 150 or something like that. summit is probably your best bet for it. -
looks good hey what did you paint your snowflakes with, i never thought of painting them white, but i am now-they look cool in white!

go to the chat room in five minutes, i gotta go to the restroom

it will help with pedal travel. are you running a manual tranny with the 2+2 booster, i heard that it wont fit with the clutch master cylinder.
-
are you still running external CAS? have you tried adjusting that?
-
not sure about this the conversion, but i know that the 82-83 setup is better not so much because of the internal cas-but the later setup stock timing should is 24btdc on an 83 vs. 20btdc on the 81. distributor and comptuer, no resistors on the injectors, i think thats it, time to pull out the fsm, not sure on this one. it will run with the distributor cranked all the way advanced on my car, but not all the way retarded, it doesnt like it from my experience. my car actually ran pretty good with the timing advanced all the, but im running less boost than you so i have more room for error i believe. i run 83 efi and switched over from 81 efi. i used the entire 83 harness though, so im not sure what other differences there are. i currently run at 24btdc, i like the factory feel myself, but i have run advanced with no issues at all, and didnt have any issues with it. are you sure you cant move the wires over to get timing down?

my buddies old 92 5.0 ran 15.0 at his best with a basically stock engine with 170k on it and a whole buttload of bolt-ons (no internals or ecu mods) and a 3.73 rear. 87-93 5.0 runs a 15.8 stock. not that fast, not that slow either. 5.0s have 225hp and 300lbs some years have 205 and 285lbs. the aftermarket for fords is also pretty cheap, the factory stuff is very competitive with the aftermarket, most 5.0s arent that fast, but some are very very fast. new Mustangs, ridiculously fast. Preludes? oh cmon. my v8z dominated street racing in general for three long years, ive taken down 5.0s in the double digits (really arent a problem, until they strap on the paxton and or nitrous, then you have to really drive a good one to get em), and a handful of preludes, most of my honda beatdowns were civics and gsr;s. We lowered a prelude and installed a jackson sc kit on it, and it still ran even with the 5.0, in five different light races. (im convinced theres no hope for them) in my old neighborhood Im known as the guy with the crazy old Z cars, now that i run a turbo car, they think its the old v8 car with a turbo on it, and generally dont try anything funny. That there was a bad ass ride right there, it won me money, street fame, and the right to say im the king of import racing. Ive grown up a little since then, but i still have almost 100 import and domestic kills under my belt, thats an average of one race every three days for three years! And the cars that beat me really knocked me for a loop, like a blown pantera, 300zxtt running 15psi on upgraded turbos and race gas, T78 Supra, GN with slicks, and yes- a 5.0 with a 100shot nitroused 331 stroker with a carb. Notice I know everyones combo thats beaten me, If you cant beat em, join em. Thats what i did. Also notice, all those cars have forced induction too COINCIDENCE?

yeah i know i know, its never enough. guess im taking a break soon for paint and body, and more stereo! -
meant to add this to an old thread that got deleted or something. finally installed the smallest NPR ic and 2.5 piping to tb and 2.25 to turbo had to relocated the coil (easy) and get busy with a sawzall to open up the passenger side radiator support a little bit, since the inlet goes diagonally up i had to get it to clear. also had the driver side inlet changed to come straight out the side of the endtank (thanks MIKE D!) ended up working out really good, i had been stacking up random turbo hoses and pipes and ended up bearly using any of them. took me thirty minutes to mount the intecooler with two L brackets and four bolts, it was a lot easier than i thought it was gonna be. part of the L bracket that holds the ic down on the passenger side is gonna recieve another bracket that i will weld onto the pipe to keep that one from moving as well. i used part of the j pipe to start my other turbo pipe, keeping the bracket that solidly mounts the charge pipe to the intake manifold, for insurance. piping took me about four hours to cut and line up right in the engine bay, its a lot harder than it sounds i find out, but not that bad in the end. got my couplers and transitions from HOOVEr, thanx partner, as well as a bunch of stainless clamps with no worm gear to eat up the hoses. need to fix my boost guage capillary, its not sensing boost right now, so i havent turned it up yet, currently as stock minus a psi or so. the wastegate doesnt even open right now, thats fine though. car looks mean, i had to put the stock grill back on it had that "steal me" look. stuff i never thought would happen: car runs just as cool as it did before, even with this big honkin ic in front of it, i guess the intake charge does that or something. off idle response isnt as perky as it used to be, but midrange and top is just as fast as it was with 7psi non intercooled, and im probably about 5.5 psi right now. car still feels just as fast as it was before, just takes that millisecond longer for the turbo to kick in, bearly anything. had to turn down the fuel pressure back to stock, started running rich? on the freeway, my car accelerates like a monster, and its easier to maintain a 80-85mph on the freeway, i guess its the high speed pressurization effect? mpg is up to heights i never thought possible- im not sure what its at now, but im getting way more out of the same gas, at least 2-3mpg more. once im done with the tank ill know for sure, but im getting at least 27mpg right now. im very impressed to say the least, once i add a rev limiter and an ignitino box and fix my boost guage i will start turning up the boost slow, over the next couple weeks, tuning and tuning with each increase of course to make sure its running its best, once i break 14.0, which i should once i empty out my car and pop the dr's out back, its going to paint and wheels jail-----------------AND IM DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! all other improvements wil happen when the parts wear out from age and abuse, but for now my little Z is earning its keep just how he is.

im gonna go ahead and say that colored wire loom is ricey. black loom, black only regardless of car color.

i hear a lot about megasquirt, but its mostly people saying they either want to know more about or they want to get it, nto people saying how good it works, which i think is up to the builder mostly, i would like to see some running cars with megasquirt and see if its for me. i like L-jetronic, its a simple and easy to use system, and i think for NA its more than enough for a stock or even a built engine. you dont have an 02?

eh, let er rip phantom, youre not supposed to be on the prowl anyway, and you will be speeding when you find your victims anyways right? speedo calibrating should be a snap, electric right?
