  1. I have used VHT brand (spray can) with very good results. As with any "paint" project the surface prep is most important. The best results I have had is to sand (or beed) blast the part and then use clean varsol. I have not tried it yet but Acetone should also work well. Let the part air dry in direct sun for a couple hours and then spray on the coatings. I usually go with 3 or 4 coating within like 3 to 5 minutes of each other.
  2. You can safely remove it, it adds very little strength to car. I removed mine by using a die grinder and carefully cutting out the spot welds. It came out very nice and frees up a lot of space. I do agree that any Z could benefit from some frame rails or at least a bolt in roll bar to add some strength. You can see some pics using the Z car page link below.
  3. We need more detailed pics of the mounting points please. They will be saved for future cage construction. Looks very nice so far.
  4. Behind the radiator back to about the strut towers is what I have heard most on an S30. Unsure about the stock hood vents as far as exhausting air??? They are between a low and high pressure area. Not sure what they do other than let hot air exit the engine compartment after you have stopped. If only someone would do the string test on the hood (and get video) it would answer this nagging question. Mine is in pieces and wont see road for a while.
  5. Try http://www.carbotecheng.com/main.htm http://www.porterfield-brakes.com I have used both for track duty. Carbotechs are my first choice. Both are excelent quality and work like nobodys business!
  6. Find out if you can tune the ECU. If you can, that’s cheap HP. IF you can tune the ECU, install a sweet intake and a quality header and be done with. You would have more than enough HP to play with and drivability to boot. Then move on to brake and suspension mods.
  7. We will remind you of this statement when you start thinking of . . .
  8. I finally got around to contacting Amsoil technical department about the zinc content in the Amsoil Series 2000 20W-50 racing oil. "In response to your inquiry, there is 1235 ppm zinc and 1370 ppm phosphorus in the Series 2000 20W-50. This is a pretty high concentration for a motor oil." Link to the Series 2000 20W-50 racing oil product page http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/tro.aspx?zo=314844 If anyone needs more info on this product let me know. I hope this will answer some questions.
  9. Marked it on the calendar. Looking forward to it seeing all the new stuff.
  10. The tach can be removed from the back side without taking the dash out. Lay on your back (in the floor board) and you can see what you need to do to remove it. It has a couple mounting points and a couple connectors. You can do it!
  11. Sorry to hear about the problems Joe. Good to hear you caught it early and it was not worse. A VERY good oil filter is your friend!
  12. Here are a couple pics of the pulley I modified. (see earlier post) I simply used a hacksaw but recommend using a milling machine. No motor in my car so the pulley was never run, but I would not have any problems doing this to a good or new pulley. * note * this was just a test pulley to see what the outcome would be
  13. Set the date that is best for Donna and yourself and we will show up ready to trash the place.
  14. Richard, As for using Amsoil, I would not recomemend mixing fuilds. Either use ATF or the 75W-90 gear lubricant. Unlike regular gear lubes the 75W-90 is very fluid even when cold. Pour Point, °C (°F) (ASTM D-97) -51 (-60)
  15. Austin, do you have measurements or a templet you care to share? Now just cut some vent wholes in the hood behind the radiator to vent some air out of the engine compartment. You do some nice work!
  16. Just wanted to add some info on what happens at the cowl area on the S30. Think about the fresh air inlets that (on most cars) are in the cowl panel. Look at a Nascar, their air inlet is at or in the cowl area for the air intake. If there is a whole in the cowl or surrounging area, its going to suck in air at speed. For my example, note my cowl area in the pic below You will note I closed off the center and driver side vent openings in the cowl panel. I wanted to clean up this area in hopes of having more of the turbulant air go up and over the windshield. The heater unit has been removed and the pass side vent was left in place so some fresh air could still enter the cockpit. At 25 mph and higher there is a full flow of air being sucked into the cockpit. More details of the cowl panel mod can be seen at the link below. http://24.254.252.164:9565/ZCar.htm Try the ribon or string test yourself and see what happens with the air moving over the hood up to the windshield.
  17. Richard, If you dont know what the fluid is or how long its been in the trans it might not be a bad idea to drain and refill with a "known" lubricant. It could have some additive added to it like some of the junk displays you see on the counters at auto parts stores. It might even take two drain and refills to clean the (whatever) out of the trans. Most top line synthetics do not require any additives other than a differential additive (if needed).
  18. Great looking place and 5 acres of land, what I dream. How far is it from your current location? Congrats!
  19. You can see that there is a boss (for lack of a better word) about 2" in all the way around the door. (some of your line is on it) I would only remove the inner part leaving the boss all around the door for strength. I would also leave the door bar in place. Get a short sawzall blade and take your time cutting. Find some small "c" channeled molding to trim it out when you done so you wont get cut by the sharp edges left on the door. Don’t know if it will pass a vehicle inspection in your state, you might want to check before you cut.
  20. I cut the outer pulley off a "test pulley" and it worked well. After doing my low tech test, I would recommend. . . Start with a brand new pulley Take it to a machine shop and have them remove the outer groove using a milling machine. Make sure they cool the part as it is cut to keep from melting the rubber insert. Have the pulley balanced after the first groove is removed.
  21. Glad to hear the progress on the home front. Post some pics when you can. So when is the home invasion party. . .er um. . . house warming? Good luck on the car stuff.
