Look what i found, but is it an upgrade?
Gollum replied to rudypoochris's topic in Ford V8Z Tech Board
Not that I disrespect your post and all, because I'm glad you're out there learning about the laws, but this has all been pretty much covered in the BAR sticky. Something that you have to read between the lines about there though, is that though "uncontrollable vehicles" can be modified, they still consider ANY modification to ANY smog system illegal, which is why they specifically mention NOx deviced. In the end the laws are so vague that even state refs dispute what's legal. Example: Not all refs consider a fuel rail illegal, since it's not directly effecting how much air/fuel enters the car at all. Other refs view it as illegal because it's a modification to the air/fuel system, which in general is illegal. A good example is an adjustable FPR, though not exactly air/fuel quantity changing, it's deemed an illegal modification by all refs. If you REALLY want to learn about this stuff I'd recommend somehow getting your hands on a real referee book. Maybe you can find one on ebay or something I don't know. But I'll guarantee you that with the size of that book there's no way all that information is publicly available online. -
Yea, good luck on those carb approved turbos The same buddy of mine with a smog shop has a JDM B16A motor in his honda, that' he's legalized (probably one of the few true legalized jap JDM motors in the bay) and he's been really made with greddy. You see, they spent all sorts of money to legalize the newer hondas for their new CARB approved turbos, and didn't fork over the money for the older hondas, regardless of NO engine change... So he's stuck having to go NA for legal HP since there's no TRUE legal force induction for a del sol (wich is what his car's label is designed around). Though in this particular case I'm not sure how exactly THOSE laws work. It's all really confusing. If it's a big enough of an issue lesd, write up a quick summery of what your car is, what you want to do with it, and what would have to be done for it to be "legal" and I'll run to my buddies place real soon and see what he thinks. I really don't understand though, around town turbos just help reduce emissions anyways. Why the state cares so much is beyond me. (everyone I've ever talked to that's done smog, would buy either an EVO or WRX for a "legal" sleeper, becuase they're AWD they don't get tested on the smog dyno, and becuase they're turbo you can get them to run perfectly clean at testing RPM with nearly limitless HP in the upper range)

I agree and I believe this is still the law. One of my best friends worked for the local ref and now has his own smog shop. That's where I've gotten pretty much all my info. And for what it's worth this smog ref he worked for gets any of the people that other refs don't want to deal with, so they had a lot of unusual cases I got to hear about (and see, since they'd let me hang out there on slow days).

No worries typhoone, my only real art skills are in music. I've tried to draw in the past, and I've enjoyed it as well. But I could never see it being anything close to talented like these folk. Though much of the work done to cars here could classify as art...

As long as you're not "street racing" the fines CAN be as minimal as fix-it tickets though. A lot of it depends on the officer. Does your engine label in the door state a vehicle it came from? If not then you've got a really awesome smog label that you REALLY need to baby.

There's always the WS6 too. They can be had for a very reasonable price and there's some deadly quick ones out there.

Depends on how much dust is in the computer I once had a service call were it smelt like something was burning terribly. I thought for sure a capacitor on the mobo was going out. I pull the case apart, and there's THREE cats worth of hair in there! So yea, don't let it get that bad and it'll always smell better than markers

What a showoff I'd be a bigger show off if I was as good as you. I won't request anything, as you stated you can't really do anything for individuals, but man, I'll take whatever I can get! What's your policy on usage? As long as we retain your watermark and don't make money on it are we free to distribute? (though it'll most likely just stay on my PC for backgrounds and such)

I know for fact they exist in manual in australia, but I've not done the research to show that they were ever brought to the USA with a manual option.

Careless - I was waiting till you posted more to say anything, but WOW. I'm very, very impressed.

I don't know how to answer your post exactly noodle, as I'm admittedly no head expert. BUT, I know that intake and exhaust are two very different beasts especially when you sit back and consider that in one case air is rushing in under vacuum and in the other case air is being pushed out via positive pressure directly after just having a burn., and that they happen completely separated by a decent amount of time of the stroke. In exhaust stroke your gases all of a sudden have a completely different molecular makeup. Different mass, density, ect. I know braap would be able to explain it all much better. He seems to have a gift on the subject. Or least that decade of experience thing....

Well, in all honesty you're doing the state a favor by putting a LT1 turbo in your car. It'll run cleaner and a lot more consistently clean at that. But really, what are the odds of finding a smog inspec trap? I've never even SEEN one of those. Though I know the state is testing a system that can be installed on overpasses that will actually be able to point out cars that are creating obsessive smog and then take a picture of the license plate thus letting state send a friendly letter saying they have to see the ref. They're trying to test the system and just stating to the victims that "you will not be charged or ticketed in any manor, this is for survey purposes only", though the actual success rate of people show up is something less than 10% I think. But definitely baby that sticker, and definitely keep that motor around. IF there's ever an issue you just put it back in, then the choice is yours (and then you read between the lines of my post ) Import guys have been doing it a long time now though. Those numerous 240SX cars with SR20s... they swap every other year. Too much work IMO.

Good points wayne. Why can't my posts be that simple to understand?
-
Haha, oh was that out loud? The 5 speed manual SC400s are quite rare. Rare enough that most people with manuals on the toyota UZ motors adapt to the W58 supra tranny. But they are nice cars, and decently priced too.
-
mmmmmm.... ok... let me see if I can explain this simply without telling you to do anything illegal. IF the car is 75' or older then there is NO smog testing needed, regardless of make/model of the passanger vehicle. BUT, any motor swap not certified is deemed by the state of california illegal. Now, the odds of a cop caring is slim. Most cops don't care when it comes to pre 76' vehicles because of the lack of smog test. General laws that apply to all vehicles are: ANY swap, in order to be legal needs to be from the same or newer vehicle. ANY swap, in order to no have to be certified by a ref, need to be the SAME EXACT motor spec that came in that vehicle. So if you're 67' stang came with a 289 it's ILLEGAL to not certify a 351W swap, though a 351W swap can be easily certified. ANY motor that was NEVER released in the USA CAN NOT be certified for an engine swap. ANY swap going through certification MUST HAVE any smog equipment that was on the donor vehicle in order to pass. Now, because of the nature of the beast, I'm not going to tell you to do anything illegal, but I will say that statistically most people with pre smog cars get away with whatever they want engine-wise. If you're living in an inner city area cops view modern cars as much more "high profile threats" than people in old 70's datsuns.

I was up in oregon for 2 weeks last summer but I didn't even mention it because I was pretty sure I wouldn't be close to anyone (klamath falls i think it was?). Some day I'd love to see braap's projects in person. The flying thing is cool too

wow, for some reason I read "thread I have started in case you were wondering" and I'm all "IT'S NOT SHOWING UP IN THE SEARCH, DAMN". I'm stoopid.

I kinda wish I would have known about this, might have been able to make it out. Key word though is might. That whole vid I was screaming 10! 10! 10!. Congrats on that 10.8

I dress like a rock star every day... ...And there ARE people who watch this thread, like me I plan on putting some vids up on youtube soon of me playing, but I'm not sure what I want to do first. I think I want to make some vids making fun of all those people that talk about how hard a particular genre is to play. Title them something like "nu-metal guitar is easy" "speed metal guitar is easy" "bues guitar is easy". Or something to that effect. Then again I might just make some decent vids of some of my neo-classical stuff. Oh, and more worrisome than that last band's wardrobe choice is their guitar tone choice. I still find it so odd that most jap bands really love that solid state tone... yum.

It's a combination of both. The better the chamber/quench design the more agressive of timing you can run. It's definitely NOT all timing though. This is the best article I know of on the topic: Detonation and Pre Ignition

A little bit different than BRG, but yes, that's still hot. It got my juices flowing

I loved british racing green back when I was 10... ...and I'm still loving that dark green towards the bottom in the middle. VERY BRG to me. Still looks hawt. (though some might call me insane for it)

man, i'm gonna get on to race one of these days and get SMOKED... oh wait cygnus already did that for me... Sorry I couldn't make it out to race tonight. Too many things going on.

You would say that wouldn't you? Though I must admit... he's right. They've sold well enough that you can get a pretty decent deal on one used. I just don't like how they're way heavier than the S30 cars and have less than half the cargo area.... 100% unpractical for myself.
