  1. Update - got the transmission out yesterday. The clutch itself was broken. I found a piece of metal in the bellhousing, and then the spot where it went in clutch disc. So - what kind of clutch should I buy? I see Rockauto sells a centerforce and a beck arnley. Considering I'm planning to turbo this NA engine very soon, I'm leaning towards the centerforce. But, its over 2x the price of the beck arnley. Will the "BA" hold at 7lbs of boost - on an NA engine that's what, about 190 - 200 hp?
  2. I will try to pull the trans this weekend. As long as I have it out, what kind of seals and other things should I rebuild?
  3. What would be a warning with the throwout bearing? I really thought it was the clutch master cylinder - the rod was a little bit damp. As far as warnings - I did have a little bit of a chirp noise that I though was a leaky exhaust flange. Its difficult to explain without a picture. It would also grind a little going into 1st and 2nd early in the mornings, which cleared up after a few miles of driving.
  4. With the engine off, it does go into gear. It doesn't seem as smooth as before, but, perhaps thats just my imagination.
  5. For the first time in 4 years of ownership, my Z left me stranded. I couldn't put the car into gear, like the clutch wasn't disengaging. The pedal was a little wet at the shaft, so I did a parking lot clutch master cylinder replacement. I bled it and bench bled it several times, no air, clean fluid. The slave "does its thing" and actuates the lever. I adjusted the clutch almost as far out as it would go, at the pedal, excessively far in my opinion... Still, can't get the car into gear. I had the car towed home, 33 miles. So, what's next? What do I check? Car is an 82 280zx NA. I appreciate any advice you all might have!
  6. I was surfing the corvette forum looking for updates about our limerock run. The bear mountain title caught my eye - and then I recognized your car in the picture! I don't see either of you two guys though. One of these days I'll join you.
  7. That's correct, I'll use a stock J-pipe I picked up on EBay. I can always intercool it later. For now, I plan to run stock boost. I will keep this thread updated with information, questions, and pictures as the work progresses. I move slowly though!!
  8. Yours is the N42 manifold without EGR or webbing. I'd keep it if I were you!
  9. OK, let's get this party started... I started to mock up the turbo on my parts car engine this weekend. I'm going to figure out the plumbing, and clean up all of the parts nicely. Then I'll take a few days off work and make the swap onto my running car. I'm planning to ditch all of the coolant -> throttle body, air idle valve stuff, and EGR clutter. I'll be running Megasquirt-I V3 with spark - I guess that's MSnS-E. Next on my to-do list: relocate the PCV, block off the EGR and cold start injector, block off coolant passages on the throttle body, and start building the down pipe, air intake pipe, and charge pipe. Still to figure out: oil feed connections, choosing sensors for MS (probably GM open IAT with the stock datsun coolant temp sensor). And, figure out what the widget is on the bottom of the throttle body... and if I can remove it. I'm in the market for some turbo fuel injectors. Can I use stock NA injectors with a longer pulsewidth? I bought some NA injectors thinking they were turbo, silly colorblindness - hey they looked brown to me!
  10. Very nice. It would be interesting to see what you could do if you factored in modern safety concerns... for example, a front bumper. PS, I hope Nissan buys your design and BUILDS IT!!!
  11. Yea, I found your thread in the body section where you describe the paint. Right after you lay down the paint and step back is a good feeling, isn't it? Don't fret the bubbles too much. When I painted my car I had bubbles, bugs, leaf pieces... all kinds of junk in the paint. Lessons for next time I suppose! Enjoy driving your car - or at least admiring it till you get a job!
  12. Looks good. Flat or matte black? What kind of paint did you use?
  13. AK, you merged brands there. Millermatic is a "140" or whatever. Lincoln uses "SP". I have a Lincoln SP100-T and love it! I bought it refurb from weldingmart.com.
  14. On the zcar site, Tom (Tom82zx) is a legit guy from Poughkeepsie, NY. The friend is probably his buddy Mike (especially since I see he signs it "mike"). I've met Tom several times, Mike once at Limerock. 12603 is Poughkeepsie, NY or near by. It looks to me like the EBay guy is going to have Mike ship directly from NY to whomever wins the auction. PS, this is Mike's car (this was last summer). Tom's is on the left, a z31. The blue s130 in the background is Phil280zxt's from this site.
  15. Looks good. Is that aluminized exhaust tube? On my exhaust, I noticed the weld joints rusted after almost a year. I had used a high temp paint from the auto parts store but it must have burned off. Are you planning to coat your welds? If so, with what? I can tell you 500 degree duplicolor doesn't cut it
  16. Happy birthday Big Phil!
  17. You should buy a lotto ticket! That's some seriously bad luck there...
  18. I watched it. The commercials on TV made it seems like it was a real grassroots effort. The actual show was nothing of the sort! I found it amusing that they were "running out money", yet they were traveling around in a shinny new crew hauler bus. The idea for the counter-rotating crankshafts is interesting though. I also enjoyed their track day with the professional riders. Thanks for the reminder to tune in, cygnus!
  19. 1) yes. Or you can cut out the sections and use them as patch panels with butt or overlap weld joints. 2) no. 22 is too thin; you'll never be able to weld that. Try 18 gauge.
  20. I started with a 40, and recently they were out of 40's so they gave me a 60. At 20 cfh, I get about 3 hours of trigger time out of my 60. That's a lot of welding if you think about it. How much do you have to do?
  21. Great idea! I look forward to seeing your video!
  22. Very nice video, Dave! Thanks for sharing. I'm also waiting a few more weeks. The roads here are still pretty gritty.
  23. Well it sounds like you've got it figured out then! LEDs are a great idea. Keep us posted!
