  1. I always think it's funny how sellers spin stuff especially mail order catalogs. Biggest thing that comes to mind is JEG's distributors. One HEI says something like get rid of troublesome points and convert to electronic ignition. While the points distributor says something like get rid of your bulky HEI and convert to points. They're sitting there on the page side-by-side sometimes. It's up to you to figure out which is actually better.
  2. Haha, that is awesome!! But, I'm glad I'm not you nor do I have any advice!
  3. I bought two 280zx one an '81 and one an '82. Well the '81 had 230k on the engine and after a compression test I decided to toss it (it never ran right anyway). Well the '82 engine ran pretty good so I swapped them out. The only thing I changed was the ignition module to the '81 module because it didn't have the connection on the side for the timing adjusting (don't know for sure whether it advances it or retards it). Anyway, that module ended up being crap so I have the '82 module in it. So, if I start it up and take it for a drive it will run great for a while and then start running funny missing cylinders. All the injectors still make noise but the 1,2, and 4 cylinders aren't really contributing anything when it runs funny. Which is weird because 1,2, and 4 is every other cylinder in the firing order. They are getting spark (because I've hooked a timing light up to them) and the injectors are still clicking. When it runs funny the light on the bottom of the ecu is ON. When the light stays off it will run great but if you leave it running for a while the light will eventually come on and then it runs like crap. It also runs funny when the light is flickering. I've swapped out the ECU's, used a different ign. module, swapped out the ECU, swapped out fuel pump, installed a new fuel filter, swapped out the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail, tried every combination of unhooking and hooking sensors, swapped out MAF sensor, had all the sensors besides MAF disconnected with the head temp sensor shorted out with a paperclip, swapped out the coil. No matter what I do it still ends up running like crap after a while. I've thought about switching to a GM module which will probably be my next step if noone can help me out with this problem. Thanks for any help guys.
  4. not worthy to be called a z anymore Why? Because someone has modified it? And you've put a V8 in a datsun!? Oh hypocrite! its ugly IMO it has its appeal its a 4cyl ok, well I'll have to give you that one... probobly something that would be drivin in an area where people have cars sitting on bricks in they;re front lawn Hey, if they put that much work into their cars as the person did with this setup I wouldn't mind living there. Stop sippin that hatorade©! Oh well, I guess you're entitled to your opinion.
  5. and exactly why wouldn't you drive that car?
  6. Why a 1996 corvette grumpy? Something special about those that I don't know about?
  7. Uuuh, yeah. But they sure know what percent of the universe it is without actually knowing what it is. I smell bull s*it.
  8. oh yeah, I'm thrilled to death that all I have to do is put a stock air cleaner on there and a hot air riser (I do know what that is btw, I just don't know if that's the correct name for it). I can rig that up in about 10 minutes and a trip to the parts store. It's funny because after he told me that's what I needed I asked him if it has to have a hood on it to pass and he said know (as it sits, my carburetor will touch my hood if I didn't have the hole cut in it for the scoop so there's no way I could fit any kind of air cleaner on there and have a hood I don't think. It would have to be a HUGE cowl).
  9. So I've been driving around town all day trying to get my '82 inspected. The guy that did my truck told me to bring it by and he'd have a look at it. When he did he basically said he didn't want anything to do with it and told me I should go to the DPS so they could tell me what I needed. YEAH RIGHT! Then when I was about to go he told me I could try another gas station downtown because he said it was easy to get a sticker over there. So I take it over there. Apparently cars before '84 don't need cats so that's cool. However the guy at the 2nd gas station tells me that cars made after '77 can't have headers! So again I'm like yeah right. I tried taking it to a truck stop but everytime I try that they always say that they're busy and it will be a few hours... So I took it to wally world and they told me they don't do inspections anymore because it was too much of a hassle. I asked him if he knew a good place and he recommended me to yet another gas station. So I go over there and as soon as the guy starts my car up he starts revving it which is fine with me really as long as I get it inspected. I didn't leave my fan running because I figured he wouldn't be gone long (big mistake) and the other place left it on while they were doing the inspection and ran my battery down. So later he comes back in and leaves the car running. I go out there because I was going to tell him to turn the fan on if he's going to leave it running. Well, as I'm walking out the door I hear him saying, "Damn, this fu&*er is fa..." then he sees me. I just told him to turn the fan on but by now the top has already blown off of the overflow. I go back inside and hear them talking a little about the car and finally he comes in and says that I need an air cleaner and hot-air riser (?) (all I've got on it now is a hilbourne (sp?) scoop). So I guess that's cool since noone else would hardly even touch the car. Anyhow, I've had some funny times today with these guys.
  10. Anyone with a Z needs a second car anyway. I don't think you can really call that an opinion either.
  11. What fan clutch did you use? I've thought about running an engine driven fan on mine but from the looks of it if I had too big of a fan it would hit the hood. My transmission might be lower than it's supposed to be. My car is also a ZX btw.
  12. HAHA 102rpm... Considering the mass that's pretty impressive though.
  13. Anyone ever seen or know about a Taurus 2 spd fan that doesn't flow as much as the ones that you are talking about? I got one out of either an '89 or '90 Taurus that has two speeds but it doesn't pull near the amount of air that you all talk about. The motor casing on the back is plastic also unlike the ones pictured in JTR which has a metal casing. I went looking for the normal Taurus fan and found a Mustang (3.8L?) fan which is HUGE! But I've never put it on. There is someone on here who has used one and says they don't have any problems with it though.
  14. Are you talking about swapping it into a 280Z or 280ZX?
  15. I've thought about putting a 305 in one of my vehicles just for something with a little balls and should get a little better mileage than a 350. Then I got my hands on a 350 vortec so so much for that. Anyway, don't rule it out because you can basically get one for nothing and you can always put another sbc in later. I know everyone who has an LS1 loves them and thinks the world of them (blah blah blah) but some of us just want something simple that still makes good power and won't cost a buttload to get started with.
  16. Oh the various curse words that are running through my head right now.
  17. Someone fill me in, what year models look like that? I've seen ONE in person in my life and I really like the looks of them. If I ever get my hands on one I would definitely do an LSx swap in it if I could bring myself to pulling out a perfectly good-running drivetrain.
  18. When you say that it's feeding power from your friend's car does that mean that you don't even have a battery in your car?! If not then you need to get one.
  19. With all of the above said, would it not be better to simply run a manual transmission? Personally, I have never had an overdrive transmission behind an sbc, I've only had 350th transmissions. I do have a 700 sitting in my garage which will hold up to the mild 350 in my truck (if I ever put it in there), but for my car I've been trying to figure out whether or not to get a 200-4r or a T56 (or just leave it the same, it has a well built 350th and I don't take it more than a few miles at a time because this town isn't very big). From what I've read the T56 is pretty reliable in stock form. Is that true or are there major mods that need to be done to it as well?
  20. Ha, this post reminds me of the times when somehow me working on my car at my house seems to be the place to be. Every once in a while someone will swing by to see what I'm up to (they know at certain times I will be working on my cars) and tell someone else, then my fiance comes over. Before you know it I have a small crowd watching me stare and think about what I'm about to do.
  21. Wow! Don't put all your eggs in one basket.... I do all of my own work not because there's noone else around, but I like to have time to myself while I'm working. I have to deal with people all the time at work and car time is solo. Plus, I find it relaxing 99% of the time.
  22. You've got a lot more patience than I do. As soon as the driveline was intact I was tearing up the neighborhood. Open headers, no tuning, and worst of all no temperature gauge. I left a substantial amount of rubber down the street as soon as I left my alley. I wouldn't advise it! So many bad things could have happened and you should probably give a fresh engine some break-in. Oh well....
