Just so you know, this is done because my turbo has a 4" inlet, yes, I'm sure it maybe overkill with the big filter, but it looks wicked up there and I'm gonna be flowing a sh*t load of air with my new build, so I figured I'd try to have some fun with it. So I decided to be different (once again) and be adventurous in doing so... With my new turbo header placing my turbo in a new position, my old air filter wasn't going to fit (4" inlet, 9.5" long and base was 5.25"-6.625"). So what did I do?! YEAH, I went BIGGER baby! My new filter is 4" inlet, 14" long, bases of 4.625"-6". Now keep in mind, I've never really fabricated anything for a car, let alone anything before I started on this new build. Sure I've had lots of ideas and had other people make them happen for me, BUT for me to actually go out and find the tools and make this sh*t myself and look back and say, "F*ck, that looks pretty b*tchin' and even more so cuz I made the son of a b*tch!" It's an awesome feeling let me tell you. The 1st pipes I made are the ic pipes right there as well in my engine bay. Not sure if this new idea of mine is gonna help much or any, but anything should be better than my previous setup which had the filter right off the turbo soaking up all the heat in the engine bay. Everything is just tack welded together for now... I showed my powder coater and he said you need to send that bad boy to me for coating! So on Monday I shipped the intake pipe, ic pipes and valve cover out to him. Finalization on the exact colors will take place soon. The car still has some work I need to do to it before I get her started up. I plan to make a splitter/belly pan and radiator/ic/air filter box somehow...I'll work out the details as I go. I had to ovalize it where it drops down behind the rad because I still have an A/C compressor there. Of course my pipe was smaller....pipe envy. I am glad to see that you ran such a large air cleaner as such attention to detail for your project will make the difference. Too many folks choke themselves by running an air filter that is not rated for the numbers they are trying to make. BTW, I saw the pics on the other forum and your project is impressive. Good Luck. Thanks James, it's appreciated for you to chime in and give me praise on this project. The intake pipe will look 1000x better once I get it back from coating. He has fully welded it up and cleaned up the curves and blended in the welds. I was gonna make my down pipe today but the darn warehouse sent over the a 5" v-band flange, NOT a 4" one....grrrr. It all looks a lot better now actually, fully welded and cleaned up and is now candy apple red w/ a pearl metallic in it. Looks so damn good! But no, my turbo air inlet is 4" in diameter, you DO NOT want to choke your turbo by running a less diameter piping is the way I understand it. veritech-z Posted June 1, 2007 Share Posted June 1, 2007 Yeah, you don't need to worry about air velocity so much in FRONT of the turbo, where this pipe is going. Now velocity AFTER the turbo, ie the intercooler piping, you would want to strike a balance between flow and velocity, for reasons of boost response. Justin, this project looks AWESOME!!!!!
