black dragon automotive tension rods
PETEW replied to freakshow's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
The only application I see it for is the 79-83 280ZX. How are you guys mounting them onto older S30 chassis stuff? -
I didn't get to meet you Austin, but I did see your car at Z days. All I can say is that it is nicer in person than in photos. Congrats on all the prizes you won (Bastard! ) I was very happy to see lots of older Z's as well as tons of highly modified newer models. Beautiful car you have there. Makes me want to get a VQ motor for the flying pickle.

What are you looking for? I might have something, or know some people that do. Let me know if you are looking for stock, modified, partially built, or......? I'll try and help you out the best I can.

Thanks for the help guys. I just decided to go to some of the local parts stores and see if any had universal straps, or if they loaned out the tool to put on regular straps. I found one that actually put the straps on for me while I waited. $10 bucks later and I am good to go. Not the cheapest, but not a rip off (at least I didn't think so). Thanks, again.

Hey guys. I had my half shaft shortened for my R200 install, at a machine shop. He didn't have any metal straps so he told me that I could just use large zip ties, for the boot, and that would be fine. I figured I would ask if others have done this and if there any adverse effects. It just sounds too easy to me. Thanks.

I am not sure if you have to cut bump stops for lowering springs. I did this on my coil over suspended 280 because the ride height is lower than springs only, and I wanted to get some more travel. As for the springs, I can't remember which goes where. Let me ask you this. Are the stock fronts longer than the rears, or vice versa? That will probably tell you where the new springs need to go. Hope that helps some.

The car looks to be in decent shape. Best of all it only cost you $650 bones. Welcome to the sickness called Z. You will find yourself thinking about driving it, modding it, and just being with it from now on.

Well, I have figured out that my oil pan gasket was bad. I am hoping that is all it was. It was a real bear changing the oil pan gasket with the engine still in the car. I just didn't feel like ripping half the car apart to change it. I will find out if I got it sealed well tonight. Hopefully that will be the end of my problems. I am supposed to be driving this car to Tennessee in 3 weeks for Z days.

That is really bad to hear. I know so many people looking for jobs right now. My wife has been out of work for about a month now. She was part of the Circuit City closing. She had been a manager there for 9 years and for her to make that money back will be near impossible in this market. I am in sales and work with Mostly production/Distribution type of business'. You can tell the market has only been getting worse. It makes me very nervous, but I just try to keep finding new accounts. One big sale can turn me from zero to hero in a minute. Ahhhhhhh, the life of a salesman.

Like the title says, my N/A 5 speed is leaking from of the tranny some where. I can't see where it is coming from (but I do know it up front) even though I have cleaned it up and looked again. I first thought it was just a sign of too much oil in the tranny and drained it till it was even with the side fill hole. That didn't solve it. I am now wondering, based on the oil I saw, if it is too thin getting past the seals. The 5 speed transmissions should have gear oil in it, correct? The oil in the transmission almost looks like motor oil to me. Do people put in light oil like that in the transmission? It is fresh oil in the transmission and it shifts beautifully, but it is leaking pretty good from somewhere up front (I get a little puddle up front where the bell housing meets the motor and a little by the drain hole). Are there any common areas that the 5 speeds leak from up front? Thanks in advance.

Hmmmmm..... That is a good question. I have a 240 and a 280 and I always figured the 280 had more headroom than the 240 because of the 350Z seats in the 240. I am not sure if I will be able to wear a helmet in the 240, it is that tight in headroom (I'm in the 6'3"-6'4" territory). The 280 has plenty of headroom, but they are still stock seats (soon to be Miata seats). I will have to check, if there are differences, now.

Too funny. I love the backwards shot, and all I hear is Phil laughing his a## off. Good stuff. Looks like you guys have a good group that has some good fun together. Keep the videos coming.

How much are you using per oil change? You are probably just getting blow by. The oil is getting past the rings as you drive, but it is so little that you don't "see" smoke. My Maxima does the same thing, but it looses a quart in 7500 miles, which you would never be able to see. Don't worry it's not a big thing. The Z06 Corvettes had this problem the first year because of weak rings. Most guys just deal with it and check the oil that more often. Hope this helps.

I know my heart got pounding when he starting rowing left and right and didn't seem to have any control of the car for a good second or two while flying down one of the "straights" of the ring. That guy was just plain ole sick.

I don't know if it is anything like 280Z but for my car I used studs from a Minivan. I think it was a 90's Nissan Quest (same as a Mercury). The thread pitch is the same and the knurl is close enough that it fits.
-
Sad part is the car is still not together. I have been so busy with our house (1700's farm house) that I have not worked on the car for 5 years. I also have been putting in time to the 240Z I now have. I am so much more overboard with the 280Z it isn't even funny. Too many I might as well moments.
-
I was wondering the same thing. There are a lot of guys running 280Z's with lowered suspension, so you would think they would have the binding issue. I haven't really looked through my Hanes manuals enough to see if they mention any difference. I guess I could also look at my two cars to see, but I'm lazy. The one thing I can assure you is that the 240Z with a R200 does need to have a half shaft shortened (drivers side). When my car is at rest the drivers side half shaft is basically bottomed out. I am having it machined right now. I am trying to make sure I take off enough, but not too much. I don't want to over shorten it causing problems when it has to expand.

Hope you have a Happy Birthday that brings you all that you want. Enjoy your day!

Congratulations, and welcome to the club. The first one is a piece of cake. The second one is where the fun really begins.

I can't believe you got those results with rattle can. It looks like it has some shine to it. Were you wet sanding the new color to smooth it out, or......? I like the color.

Flowers from you daughter is very sweet. Just shows that she loves you. Now if you got them from the boys at the gym or any of your buddies...............Let's just leave it at that. Happy Belated! -
Here is a pic of my Z when Mike owned it. It is on the Dragon when it was foggy. I think this is a really cool shot. Here is another of it on the track.

When I did the underside of my car, it was pretty rust free. I took of all the undercoating with a needle scaler and then prepped with the metal ready and marine clean. I figured it would be better to be safe then sorry. You never know what has been on metal as old as our cars are. My underside has been painted for 6 years now and still looks really good.
