  1. If the car is not moving then you have no means of passing air through the radiator. It is this movement of air that cools the coolant, not simply having a radiator in-place.
  2. It took me around 2 hours for my cat-back (HKS Hi-power) on my 2006 WRX. I did the work myself and ran into issues when installing the exhaust. I can't believe the shop rate though. Even here in So Cal they are modest enough to only charge $90/hour. MAG, the first time I ran into a torx bolt was on my old 2002 Audi S4. I took one look at that and started cursing in German.
  3. First time drinker? I would go after a nice blend and see if you like the taste. JW Black Label is not bad for the money or you could try an Irish whiskey like Jameson's which is smoother. From there the sky's the limit. The single malts (which many of us are talking about) are hit and miss, depending on what your partial to. Some taste sweet while others taste like you're drinking dirt. Drax, where'd you buy that bottle from?
  4. They've really dried up the last few years. I used to frequently find 280zs and the occassional 240z, now all I see are 280zxs. The two Tony mentioned off Wilmington and Blinn (good sized yards) sometimes have them. I have NEVER seen a 510 at one of these yards, including the Import only yard off I-10 near the speedway. There is another large yard in Sun Valley that had the occassional S30 as well.
  5. During my days at Purdue University, we would get artic blasts that would cause the temperature to plummet to -65 degrees F with windchill. I am not exaggerating. Bastards did not cancel classes when it was -60 degrees F so we would walk to class (15 to 20 minutes) just to find out the professor canceled the class because his car would not start. I remember taking one of my freshman finals in the ROTC armory when it was -35 degrees outside. The armory is/was a wide open hangar with minimal heating. Thank god that test was multiple choice because I couldn't write worth a damn my hands were shaking so bad.
  6. Bike engines spin at much higher rpms than a typical v8 or L6. It may work in a high rpm application. The high Tom's will help to smooth out the delivery would it not?
  7. No, you are correct. #1 and #5 are 120 degrees apart, #5 to #3 are 120, and #3 to #6 are 120 degrees, which puts #1 and #6 at TDC together. http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=149540&highlight=gasket Look at the first picture and it confirms your statement.
  8. Did you read the link? It is not the cam shaft but the crank shaft. The cam is timed to the crank shaft, not the other way around. Read the first link I provided and this link as well: http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/topics/Firing_order No where is there talk about the cam shaft setting the firing order. The firing order is determined during the design of the crank to satisfy design criteria. Read #56 http://books.google.com/books?id=6V1VAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA60&lpg=PA60&dq=what+determines+engine+firing+order&source=bl&ots=dM2KTlr1Nd&sig=A1sWDFXuXuaaY55D8CdCWaJ4qx0&hl=en&ei=hxNhS6SeOczQ8QaOidDUDw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=4&ved=0CA0Q6AEwAzgU#v=onepage&q=&f=false Again, no discussion regarding cam shafts. Here: http://en.allexperts.com/q/Classic-Antique-Car-2542/2009/7/1927-chevrolet-firing-order.htm Again, no discussion regarding cam shafts. Here is a thread where Paul is talking about flat plane cranks and has some great diagrams: http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=139545
  9. Go ahead and set your firing order to whatever you want it to be, say, 1-2-3-4-5-6 and see how well your car runs, or 1-3-5-6-4-2, or any other combination that does not take into account the relative positions of the crankshaft journals. Read: http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/what-determines-engine-firing-order-103531.html
  10. The crank shaft sets the firing order, not the cam shaft.
  11. The original logo still looks the best as a sticker.
  12. Ok, wait a sec. Am I reading this right? You actually had the car running fine until you loaded some one else's file. Now the car wont' run for more than a second. Guess what, do not load someone else's map. Use their timing, target AFR's and VE tables, yes, their entire file? No.
  13. You best do some more research. Methanol is not used simply for anti-freeze properties. It may be used as such in window washer fluid, but as an injectant it is used for intake charge cooling and fuel supplement. The corrosive issue is minor when injecting. I am injecting 1400 cc/min of methanol and replacing 25% of my primary fuel with methanol. 510six used to run meth injection and Bernard and big-phil use it extensively as well. The Buick GN crowd swears by it (www.turbobuick.com) as do many of the RX7 folks (www.clubrx7.com). Subies and Evos are into heavily as well (www.nasioc.com and www.evolutionm.net). I am not going to go into a long discussion regarding methnaol injection. There is a plethora of information on the web regarding methanol injection.
  14. We supplement our fuel (methanol injection, water injection - myself, big-phil), run ethanol (510six, Timz), or run higher octane fuel. I've done the cooling modification described in the sticky near the top of this forum and it has helped considerably with evening out the heat distribution in the head. This will allow you to run more timing but not considerably more. Keep in mind that producing power is not about "big advance numbers", but rather running enough timing to get the peak cylinder pressure to occur around 15* ATDC at mean best torque.
  15. Those look pretty but they are not very efficient. A catch can should be internally baffled, those are simply empty cans. You want a baffle between the inlet and outlet to facilitate condensation of the oil vapor. Some folks install stainless steel wool in the can to act as a baffle as well as a media to collect the oil vapor condensate. Look at this thread: http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=157979&highlight=catch I bought my CNC anodized black aluminum catch can that is internally baffled for $110 plus $10 shipping from an Ebay vendor as well. They were a pleasure to do business with. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/79-04-MUSTANG-V8-GT-BILLET-OIL-CATCH-CAN-BLACK_W0QQitemZ110483798531QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item19b958fa03
  16. Glenfiddich 12 is good, as are Macallan 12 and Cairnleigh 12. I don't care for the peaty scotches too much (Isle of Spey I am looking at you). Good god, I drank this one scotch at my cousins wedding that was supposedly only sold at the distillery on the isle. It was like drinking dirt. I kept wondering if I had grass in my teeth. I don't buy the more expensive bottles as often as used to as I drink them too fast. My every day bottle is usually an Irish whiskey since they are quite smooth. I really like the premium Tequila's and have been drinking more of them lately. I find them similar to Scotches in their complexity and smoothness.
  17. Stepan is correct. The piston must be rotated in and out. It can take quite a while to get the clearance you need, so be patient.
  18. Sweet merciful necro-post! Date checks are usually helpful when replying to a thread.
  19. I've been contemplating the same subwoofer setup as you and am wondering how you mounted the plate. Is it simply a friction fit or are there supports below the plate? How are you keeping it in place? Thanks,
  20. Ding, ding, ding! I bought my Z right before we had our daughter. I used the Z to help escape the rigors of my daily grind, between home and work responsibilities. I would work on the car at night for a few hours after my daughter went down as a means of stress relief.
  21. Your buddy is not doing a great job at advertising the meet. Do a search on Surfin Souvlaki meet and you get an S2000 forum, Ratsun and Hybridz. What about Japanesenostalgiccar.com? Nicoclub? Dime? Club4ag? Zilvia? RX7club.com? EvolutionM.net? Nasioc.com? I know I am missing the quite a few more. I am thinking about going, but not if I am going to be by myself. Seriously, this is rather poorly advertised.
  22. Tim, by higher mixtures do you mean leaner? The charts are for fuel-air equivalence ratio. In this case, 1 is equal to an AFR of 14.7, 0.9 is an AFR of 15.9 and 1.1 is an AFR of 13. I seem to run high(ish) EGTs on my setup as well. I routinely hit 1600 F under boost and can watch my EGTs climb on Logworks under load. I've tried to lower them as well without much success.
  23. Time to fry the noodle. Richer mixtures have a faster flame speed than leaner mixtures. Check out the following two links: http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=170270 http://www.honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=2445210&page=2 (post #37) I did some reading a while back and found these. Anything with a chart is bookmark worthy to this engineer.
  24. Paul, thanks for the quick response. I don't doubt you, but I was concerned about running hotter at that timing. Ron and I talked a while back and he suggested running around 41ish at cruise, which I was. I also leaned out my map at cruise to run an AFR around 15.5. However, my engine definitely ran hotter with the higher timing and leaner fueling.
