  1. jon, i think that is an excellent example and paints a nice 'word' picture in my mind. i am no expert in alignment or handling so i should be clear that when i say we changed my caster, i meant pushed the wheels forward-they are now pretty close to hitting my kaminari air dam when they turn. i don't pretend to know why, but the steering effort does feel less-both at parking speed and on the track. i recall when i was a kid we'd cut forks off our parts bikes then add tubing to get the stupidly long chopper forks. looked ultra cool [think mid 70's] but were horrible to steer and had queen mary-like turn radius'. i also remember that the headset would rise when turning the handlebars with the bike at rest.
  2. nice summary in posts 84-85, thanks. oddly enough, my steering effort appeared to become lesser when we 'moved the front wheels forward' [caster] and on turn in the tires had a better bite at the track. i run coilovers and mike kelly's zf racing adjustable front lcs's on my z.
  3. all, one detail i overlooked is shipping-my apologies on this. spoke with the shop today, they estimate shipping will be no more than $35 and use fedex. regarding options [v-bands & high speed merge collectors] you are NOT locked into them until you place your order with the shop. i listed desired options as a way to gauge [for the builder] what the totals will look like. you can always add or delete when the time comes. we have 12 currently on the list, just 3 more and we begin the prototype build-we are soooo close! !
  4. mine is in the cabin as well-tucked up on the right side of the glovebox.
  5. read numerous lsx related posts from various websites [which a google search provided] this weekend discussing the 1 ¾ vs. 1 ⅞ primary tube battle. old discussion, repeatedly hashed back and forth-there is a ton of information out there and not all of it fact based. in a perfect z world, we would test both size headers with identical exhaust on the same car. then on various engine configurations [greater displacement, heads, cam, turbo & supercharged]. unfortunately budget prevents us from doing this-hence the draw to a group buy! spoke with the builder again this morning and asked him specifically about [the majority of us on the] thread and what he felt [in his experience] would provide the best ‘fit’-with room to ‘grow’ [think upgrades like; throttle body, intake, heads, cam, etc.]. he responded saying 1 ¾. he then told me about an lsx vette they built which is a drag car that consistently runs 10’s, ~800 rwhp supercharged and runs 1 ¾’s with a dual 3†exhaust and that if the owner thought he could go faster would have gone to the 1 ⅞’s. i then asked if, for my engine [2001 ls1, no; ac, cats or ps], ported throttle body and a mild street tune-330 rwhp, 360 rwtq, would i be restricted with 1 ¾ if i were to later upgrade with; cam/tb/intake? he said no. good enough for me. like i stated initially, if we had fat budget then extensive testing could be performed and we could then determine best application for our lsx z’s. of course, if that was the case [$$$$] then we would all have our own built to perfectly meet our specific z’s!
  6. nullbd, will get you added shortly [need the admins to do it]. spoke with builder today regarding primary sizing. here are his thoughts based on 7 years of building, tuning and personal preference. rwhp under mid 400's, cubic inches under 402, supercharged or turbo'd, 1 3/4 ok. over the above he'd suggest 1 7/8, and good for low 900's to the rear wheels. any larger then you lose torque. cost for the 1 7/8 around $350 additional, if anyone is interested.
  7. i don't know enough about engines to answer your question. i'll call the shop that will build the headers and ask them their opinion and post in the thread for you.
  8. in case anyone was wondering, i am not doing this as a business venture/to make $ but only to get long tubes in the hands of us lsx s30 swap owners who want them-me included!
  9. new thread with new builder contracted for stainless steel 1.75" primary longtubes. not hijacking but posted with permission from cable [thanks cable for the support!]
  10. would i be overstepping my bounds if i asked to post a link in your longtube thread to this one?
  11. headers come without flanges [think straight pipe]. you can opt for the v-band connectors if so desired. the v-bands come with the mating connector to weld to the exhaust you'll connect to the header, pricing in the post. in the first post click on either v-band or hs merge collector to view more info [they are linked]
  12. cable, many thanks for the grace and kind/supportive words. i too am not doing this as a business venture but in the hope we can all benefit with the much desired long tubes. let me know if you'd like to be added to the list... all, i added a couple things to the initial post anticipated timeline links to detail the available options; v-band connections and hi-speed merge collectors. simply click on the link for v-bands or hs collectors it is not an either or you can add both, either or neither. your choice
  13. Gauging interest in new LSx long tube header group buy - Over the years others have made strong efforts to do a run of long tube headers for the LSxZ's but no one has [other than one-offs] them currently available. I'm not wanting to step on any toes, just want a quality, reasonably priced long tube for my z. So, did some research and found a reliable shop willing and able to build headers. They have been in business for 7+ years and are accredited by the BBB. I was referred to them by a very competent fabricator/friend who works at the shop that tuned my Z. Unfortunately they are not set up to handle a production run like this. Specifications / details of the proposed LSx Datsun S30z Long Tubes * 36" equal-length primaries * 16 ga (industry standard) T304 stainless steel, mandrel bends * 1.75" primary tubes all Tig welded * 3/8" thick, stainless steel flanges * 3†open collector-straight pipe [see v-band option below] * sufficient clearance for spark plug access * designed to fit the johns cars engine / trans mounts, 70-78 s30's * new header bolts * new oem Multi Layer Steel (MLS) exhaust gaskets * oxygen sensor bungs welded into collector (1 per header) * prototype set built using donor car supplied by sunnyz * approximate 4 week time to build prototype pair * 4 weeks to build group buy header run once prototype is completed * price; $825/ pair, including all above * after initial run, headers will be ordered / built individually and priced approximately 25% higher * options [links added below to further explain v-bands and hi speed collectors]; * v-band connectors $110 and include: * v-band connection tig welded to collector * mating v-band connection included to weld to your exhaust * high speed merge collectors $325 Once list of committed buyers is assembled and production is ready to go we'll provide you via email / pm the shop contact information so you can provide your deposit and any individual variations you want [pricing details for special orders other than listed above will be quoted by shop]. As you know hbz policy prohibits taking deposits / payments prior to having product in hand. SunnyZ & myself will be funding the prototype pair. the shop contracted will not take any deposits until production is ready to go. once ready, each buyer will contact the shop directly Next steps; subscribe to the thread & post with quantity desired, options from above list and your hbz user name, we'll then add you to the list. Once this list reaches 15, prototype production begins. Updates and pics of prototypes will be added as we receive them. Once prototypes begin the shop estimates 3-4 weeks to build them. once complete, production should take about 4 weeks to build headers for those on the list below. feel free to email/pm me with any questions you may have vb = v-band connectors, mc = merge collector 1. 1vb - 1 tuff z 2. 1 - sunnyz 3. 1vb - evilc 4. 1 - Litman 5. 1vb - mpramsey 6. 1vb - RebekahsZ 7. 1vb mc - alainburon 8. 1[vb?] - blueshark123 9. 1vb - nullbound 10. 1vb - neverenough 11. 1vb - svMike 12. 1 - Zzeal 13. 1 - zeeboost [1 7/8] 14. 1 - iHeartTouge 15. 1 - need4speed069 16. 1vb - akuma-z 17. 14. i will begin a new thread with the fuel block off plate soon. ztekmfg will be the manufacturer [jimmyz cnc guy] and has run all the other cnc billet parts i have listed in our group buys. details will be provided in the thread.

  17. nice to see you back on hbz brian!
  18. mine... wheel, momo. when my grandmother passed in 1996 my mom handed me $200 and instructed me to spend it on something for myself that i normally would not. so i purchased this momo wheel. think of her often when i'm driving my z. in the background you can see the shift knob. it's a one off custom titanium cnc billet, cnc engraved 'z' on top. heavy and expensive, i really like it. logan1, if you're interested, i have a nos amco black walnut datsun logo shift knob-still in the original box. pm me your email and i can send you a pic.
  19. pete, we used the swain coatings back in 89 when i was a crew chief on a formula continental team-headers and such. i had them coat my sanderson headers back in 2006 and are holding up just fine. they had also coated the header on my L6 supercharged engine and worked great the entire time i had it.
  20. pete, didn't know if you knew but i'm about 20 min from dan swain's place. he laughed when i was there to have my lsx headers coated and when i replied to his question as to the cars engine they were for. told me i was a sick man for the hp to wt ratio i'd have in that little z. he's a vette guy himself.
  21. i took a std +1 conversion tire; 205/60/15 as the base. then added in 3 16" sizes, 225/50, 205/45 & 205/50. if you read the bottom row 'diameter diff' you'll see in red color font that the 45 aspect is not recommended as it exceeds 3% difference from 'stock'. you'll also see that either of the 205's are too narrow for an 8" wheel, max rcomd is 7.5. http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp?action=submit
