  1. The wheels are not seating completely on the front hubs. I have just been through this exercise on a 260Z. The inside diameter of the hub opening is almost the same as the hub outside diameter (75mm) of the S30 front hubs. These wheels were made by American Racing (their Ansen series). The 4x4.5 bolt pattern wheel was designed to fit the 1960’s vintage Ford Mustang six-cylinder and not the Z car: http://www.americanracingwheelsinfo.com/American_Racing_Ansen_Sprint_Slot_Mag.htm However, due to manufacturing tolerances some of these wheels will just barely fit correctly on an S30 hub, but some wheels will not. This is probably why Motosport Auto no longer sells them and denies that there is a fitment issue. I sure there are people driving around with these wheels and have only four or five turns of thread engagement on the wheel nuts. Although Nissan changed the design of the S30 hubs when the 260Z was introduced, the fitment issue with these wheels remains whether you have a 240Z hub or a 260z/280Z hub. To make these wheels fit correctly you can install a spacer between the wheel and hub and use longer wheel studs or have the center opening on the back of the wheel machined out. Since the 260Z I was working on had the vented Toyo calipers on it, I used the wheel spacer.
  2. What about L6’s side-by-side. Like the V8's on the Twin Mill:
  3. I think I might have a set. They’re 1mm oversize and still attached to the L28 rods. I'll look for them tonight.
  4. There’s a few threads about them on the Classic Z Car site: http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29518 http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=24585 http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23765
  5. http://nissan4u.com/parts Unlike the fiche website, these are very readable! No S30 , but it has the S130, Z31, Z32, 350Z and even the 1997-2000 R33 and R34 Skylines.
  6. TWM Induction sells them: http://www.twminduction.com/Filter/FilterAirBox.html But they’re $375 apiece ($821.25 if you want carbon fiber).
  7. Since the steering shaft between the rack and pinion and the steering column will hit the stock 810 exhaust headpipe, another headpipe (or header) will have to be used. I going to try a stock 240Z headpipe (different design than the 810 one) this weekend, but I have come to the conclusion that something may have to be made that will fit. I have several aftermarket headers that I will attempt to modify for clearance. If that doesn’t work, then I have to fabricate a custom exhaust header for the 810. Actually, making a header is something I always wanted to try. A lot of hot rodders and drag racers have done this. Stahl makes the L-series flange piece and you can get the tubing from them or various suppliers. Funny how one project leads to another!
  8. I've done several of the Maxima alternator swaps and you must use a bushing to space the S30 pulley away from the Maxima alternator so it doesn't rub. But, even with the bushing/spacer there is still enough threads exposed on the shaft so you can tighten the pulley nut.
  9. The diameter of the ZX stub axle (where the bearings seat) is actually smaller --30mm vs. 32mm, than the first generation 1970-78 Z cars. The reason for this is that Nissan increased the outside diameter of the outer wheel bearing on the 1977 Datsun 810 from 70mm to 75mm. However, a “standard†sized 75mm OD bearing is only available that will fit on a 30mm diameter shaft. You cannot use 27 splines on a 30mm diameter shaft so Nissan returned to using 25 splines. What does this have to do with the 280ZX? Well remember Nissan copied the 810 suspension for use on the 280ZX. BTW, the Z31 stub axle starts out at 30mm diameter but then it tapers out to a diameter of 35mm where the wheel flange is.
  10. I’ve had good results with Moog ball joints. Part number for the S30 is K9011 or MOK9011. Found one source at $58.04 http://www.autopartswarehouse.com
  11. Well, it’s done! Good bye re-circulating ball. The 280ZX rack and pinion steering is in the 810. The Maxima steering column parts would not work so I ended up using the internal shaft from a 280ZX column inside the 810 steering column tube. I need to take a few more pics and then I will write it up and post it next week.
  12. A light tap with a small brass hammer has always worked for me.
  13. Here’s one I got for my 260Z. I’ve also seen one with the 240Z logo (and now we know there’s a 280Z one). The one I had was a poor quality casting. The breather cap was a standard small-block Chevy piece so IMHO, I think it’s a USA made part. I was happy I sold it as I couldn’t use it. It is taller than the stock valve cover so it interfered with my strut bar.
  14. Yes. That will work. Press out the tube by applying force around the perimeter of the tube. I’ve had to do this so I could turn the hub housing on a lathe. (I had to increase the bore diameter of the hub housing in order to use the Z31 stub axle.)
  15. Some…. I have installed the modified 810 crossmember with the ZX rack-and-pinion. The engine and steering column are out, allowing me more room to experiment. I am first going to try to use the Maxima steering column shaft inside the 810 steering column. The 810 column has to be shortened since the Maxima shaft is shorter. This will probably work out better in the long run as a shorter shaft will reduce the angularity of the universal-joints of the shaft between the column and the rack. Also, the “ignition key lock” groove on the Maxima shaft is in a different location so a new groove will have to be machined into it so it will match the 810 key location. Both parts are presently at the machine shop.
  16. Have you contacted any of these companies? Bama Foundry Incorporated 1427 N Court St Montgomery, AL 36104 (334) 263-3446 Impatient Creations, Inc. 1960 Fulton Springs Rd. Alabaster, AL 35007 (205) 664-1447 Doyle Restoration, Inc. P.O. Box 1066 Pell City, AL 35125 (205) 591-1114

  18. I agree that attempting to find the Nissan part number for the 1†diameter truck master cylinder is very confusing (been there, done that). However, the 1993 V6 SE King Cab Hardbody Truck uses the 1†master (at least here in the USA).
  19. There is the Wilwood 1†diameter master: http://www.wilwood.com/Products/006-MasterCylinders/008-CRTMC/index.asp and: http://www.wilwood.com/PDF/ds439.pdf Because it is a “vertical mountâ€, it fits the S30 boosters. However, you will have to swap the outlet ports to match your metric lines. I am using a 1†master from a Hardbody truck on my 260Z. But I am using a 1983 ZX booster which has a “horizontal mount†for the master. The ZX booster only fits the 1974-78 Z cars.
  20. Well the “bench method†of testing the distributor pick-up coils is to remove it from the car and connect it to a good ignition unit and a good coil. Rotate the distributor shaft by hand and check for a spark. BTW, are you sure the wiring is OK?
  21. A condenser is a capacitor that is placed across a mechanical switch contacts (like ignition points) to prevent arcing across the contacts opening when they open. Transistor ignitions do not need such protection, hence the condenser is not needed. They will have a small capacitor across the switching transistor to reduce EMI, but it is typically 100 times smaller in value than a condenser. Five volts at the coil side of the resistor is too low when the ignition is “onâ€. It should be more than 9.6V. It appears that the transistor is biased so it is on continuously (instead of being pulsed). Since you have changed the coil and the ignition unit, your problem could be the trigger coil in the distributor. Do you have another distributor you can try?

  23. Well I doubt you will find a junk yard just willing to sell the lower control arms. They are more willing to sell the entire rear suspension clip. The differential does not have to be removed. You unbolt it from the suspension crossmember and let it hang from its rear mount. The rear sway is attached to the crossmember and the control arms. So it comes off when you drop the entire rear suspension clip. No need to remove it separately. Remember, we are talking about a 280ZX here….
  24. Yes they will. Only difference is the brake caliper mount. But it is easier to just swap out the entire rear suspension crossmember with the lower control arms.
  25. You have the early (i.e., 1979-81) 280ZX rear calipers and rear rotors. The caliper bracket (hidden from view in your picture) could either be the Jim Cook Racing one (vintage 1991) or the flagrant Eric Chapman copy or even the Nissan made bracket (see thread http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=126031). This is a perfectly acceptable set-up. That is an almost impossible combination to use on an S30. I think you mean “a 1986-88 4x4 caliper with a Z31 front rotor (and the rotor spacer)“. The 1979-84 4x4 caliper is designed for a solid rotor and the Z32 rotors will not fit unless you use a custom hub. Yes, that caliper pictured is upside down! For the hardware kit you need to get a Beck Arnley 084-0930.
