  1. As a 22 year old Vietnam veteran college student, In 1971 I stopped in on a Jane Fonda Anti- war rally on the University of Forida Campus. I distinctly remember the presence of John Kerry (Didn't know who he was then) - the one wearing all the medals and standing close to Hanoi Jane. I heckled and threw things at the speakers until the campus police asked me to leave. I'm like most people - looking for a good choice in this election. But Kerry is definitely not the one for me. Some one who can (heroically?) fight, then participate in that kind of anti- serviceman - baby - killer garbage, is a flip - flopper extraordinare. We won't even get into his politics. What a Bozo.
  2. Dang Joel - I want the dodo scared out of me.
  3. I'd be in for one with baffles -
  4. My engine smoking problems have been pretty conclusively isolated to ring- related issues. I have had to pull the engine and have the cylinders re- honed with the proper tooling for my Total Seal Rings We still have this and two other engines (also not installed yet) equipped with the Ford seals, and I will report as soon as data is available. All indications are that the Ford seals are good - It's unfortunate that my machine shop mishap has clouded the testing...
  5. It was great to meet the famous "12SSUD" - A drag racer extraordinaire and a cool guy. Even though I'm a confirmed turbo type, some characteristics of a supercharger still fascinate me - Low end torque and simplicity foremost among them. We'll investigate these as this project progresses. Ken's philosophy: "Why be normal?" Oh yeah, As I told Norm, Ken may be a little too easily impressed with my abilities.
  6. Drax, So your 3.1 with the Ford/ Felpro seals is still smoke free? I want to get mine fixed and end the delayed gratification!
  7. Porkchop 12 Flat Big file, not for dial-up.
  8. I'm watching this one .... Drax, do you have oil in your intercooler tubes? I have convinced myself that my oil consumption/smoking problem is those f'ing Total Seal rings not wearing in - I'm in the process of pulling the new motor now - but now your new engine with the Ford valve seals is smoking. Let me know what you find.
  9. Still way cool to look at - Thanks Alan.
  10. HS30-H, Would you mind if I posted your famous picture of the OS Giken - Headed twin turbo? Seems like once a year or so new members read about this head and try to get one.
  11. Guys, Doug's setup (standard size intakes and 1mm oversize exhausts) is what I'm using. After studying other high horspower L motor setups, I've learned that there is no further benefit from larger valves unless major porting and unshrouding is done. I've also heard that you should stay away from SI P90 Z valves.
  12. Well, after chasing my oil smoke problem on my new 3.0 L6 I've finally come to the conclusion that this is another one of those Total Seal - equipped engines that will not wear - in the rings. I just couldn't resist using those things.... Does anyone have a recommendation for rings (other than Total Seal)? This is a low compression Turbo Motor.
  13. Ferrea has P90 - length valves in their catalog. My machine shop got them for me when doing the head. They were not in stock and had to be made- had to wait about 3 weeks. About 22.00 apiece.
  14. Lookin good, Scottie - Very tidy engine compartment. Glad to hear you're installing a proper wastegate....
  15. John, Great numbers, and pig -rich too! You can probably meet your horsepower goal with tuning. TEC and FJO is my setup. Looks like your basic fuel curve (IOT and TOG) needs to be leaner throughout the whole range.. Send me some shots of your calibration and some FJO .wbo files and I''l take a look.
  16. Doug, The Ferrea catalog lists stainless valves in the P90 Length - but they don't usually stock them. Mine had to be made to order, and I waited about 3 weeks for them. They were about 25.00 apiece.
  17. Ive been trying to figure out which way to go with my smoking/ Oil consumptiom problem with my new motor: http://hybridz.org/nuke/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=34487 (scroll down to my latest post talking about symptoms) and hope that some resident diagnostic experts can chime in. Engine is a 3.0 liter L, Total Seal Gapless rings on Venolia Forged Turbo pistons, block torque plate bored, New Ferrea Stainless valves in new bronze exhaust guides and stock intake guides that the trusted machine shop tested as being not worn enough to replace. I strongly suspect the Ford valve stem seals used to rebuild the head, but the symptoms don't lead my limited troubleshooting skills toward a definite suspect. Thanks for any help/suggestions-
  18. Well, still no definitive word on whether my oil consumption is seals or rings... My car never smokes on startup, but does have rather oily intake valve tops (I had to pull my intake to work another problem, and took a look)- Not gross amounts of oil, but enough to keep suspicions alive. One weird symptom - It seems to smoke worse when the engine is really hot (not overheated) , like after it's been running for a while on a hot day with A/C on. I did do a compression test, and the results, 150psi +, - 5psi seem to exhonerate the rings. When the car gets back together I'll continue to put miles on it and see if the smoking/oil consumption decreases. If no improvement is seen after a few hundred more miles, I will swap in the Nissan "A" series seals (PITA)and report back. The plugs are starting to look better, I think - so maybe time will tell. I will make another post in the troubleshooting section and see if there are any diagnostic experts who can help.
  19. I work with a Z06 owner who will not play any more. Pork Chop embarasses the vette in every phase of performance. My car runs a 12-flat in the quarter and out handles/out brakes the Chebby. This performance was done with a stock 280ZXT bottom end, mildly worked head with mild turbo cam, 60-1 turbo/ big intercooler, and Standalone EFI. With my new forged piston 3.0 liter, I'll not only embarass, but humiliate Z06s. I've spent about 30K, including the new motor. My car has cold AC and a CD player, and I wouldn't be afraid nor uncomfortable taking a trip to California in it. (I live in Florida). Probably would give the vette the nod for comfort, as coilovers transmit a fair amount of noise to the inside. Real men don't place comfort over performance.
  20. Drax, I admire your engine bay's clean simplicity. Check my latest update pictures for an "un-simple" look. Yukk.
  21. Well, For whatever reason, I need more fuel. 750s are on the way. I'm troubled by the way the engine still smokes (oil) after about 300 breakin miles - but the quantity seems to be decreasing. It does not seem to be valve stem seals. I'm using Total Seal rings with Steel gapless 1st rings, torque plate bored cylinders. I have heard some stories about Total Seals... Redoing rings would be a bummer. Latest engine pics - I did some cleanup this time with the engine out, but am still not satisfied with the clutter in the engine bay. There's lotso "stuff" in there with factory A/C and all.
  22. My new engine has about 300 miles on it, and smokes a lot still. I'm hoping it's just rings breaking in, as I've had Total Seal rings like these before (steel gapless tops, standard seconds) that took a long time to wear in. 4 out of the 6 plugs are rather oily, and the smoke can be seen when you rev the engine, then let off and pull manifold vacuum. It's not coming from the turbo compressor seals.... Any diagnostic experts here that can suggest how to identify oil sources? I'll continue to put miles on the engine and report back in. We will get more data on these seals as I have a friend nearby that just did two z heads with them.
  23. I'm in the process of double checking indications now... I've tuned for 12:1 on the wideband and relying on my E-motive software to report duty cycles at 225 kpa and 7000 rpm. I keep getting duty cycles in the 90% range. That does seem to be a rather high number.... FP is right, 43 static and referenced to boost. On the other hand, I do know that other high horspower inliners (James, TimO, and TimZ among them) are using the 7x pounders. I wonder what difference the Buick's sequential FI makes in this comparison? Probably none. I'm puzzled also.
  24. I don't know if kings are made by potential alone - we'll have to see how it works out. The new motor is really strong, however - James- I still want to do that- like I said, there is space for that big compressor, but I have to get the injectors done first. It appears my 550s are close to maxed out at 18psi On another topic-does anyone know which injectors to buy that fit into the bungs on a stock Datsun manifold? Or how hard it is to adapt our manifolds to accept Delphi/MSD/Holley injectors?
