That's a good point, although I'd imagine it would be difficult to "foul" these strainers, especially considering your previous statement: "Those Pierce strainers are not "filters", they're rock strainers." Now that I think about it, I can test the strainers/filters on my other Z given that it fits those horns. The horns are 1.5" shorter so that I can get a filter housing over them. I was already planning to dyno test after getting the car back on the road (should be soon) in order to quantify filter losses and effects from the air horns, so I can add testing those strainers at the same time.

1970 series 1-Paint the engine bay black or color?
Leon replied to Perfect240z's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
Agreed! -
I enjoy tuning triples and it's pretty straightforward now that I've amassed some knowledge over the years. If the AFR noticeably changes when removing the filters, the only tuning change needed would be main jets, at least to determine power loss at WOT.
-
You didn't get it. ANY filter restricts the intake. The point of testing is to find out how much of a restriction it presents. Tuning these carbs is very simple, if you know what you're doing. Changing 6 main jets, if need be, is not difficult.
-
That's really not enough for me to go on. I have those strainers on one of my Zs, and once it's sorted I plan to hit the dyno and see just how restrictive they are (all filters will have some restriction). I don't know if I can do a filter comparison since my horns stick out too far to get a K&N pod on there. The strainers are my best option as far as space, I'd have to buy shorter horns to run a filter. Again, I'll have actual numbers when I go to the dyno.

I purposely switched to a ZX fan and did a comparison: http://forums.hybridz.org/topic/101984-cooling-fan-for-edis-install/

You wouldn't run them because "they look very restrictive"? Not a great reason, is it?

Fantastic!

Weber jets??All who live for their triples please read this
Leon replied to datfreak's topic in Nissan L6 Forum
That's exactly why I went to Keith's jetting, considering he was local. Not only did the car run better, but it's cheaper for me in the long run as I don't need a library of jets (although I managed to make a small collection at this point anyway ). I saved on idle-jets and e-tubes at least... Playing with these things is definitely not for the feint of heart. -

Keith has recommended a toothpick before. I read on the side draft forum about guys using tips of zip-ties, Loctite, etc... Well you're in Europe (and right next to Spain, assuming that's where the jets are being manufactured since the carbs are made there), so I'd imagine buying Weber jetting isn't difficult where you're at. -

In your case, I'd try to at least plug some of those upper air holes in your e-tube. The F11 really sucks for DCOE applications, it was made for down-drafts where the fuel level is higher relative to the tube (as Keith has shown) so that the air holes are submerged. The Sidedraft site has some great suggestions for modifying Weber e-tubes, seemingly with the F7 (I believe?) being the best candidate. If you have access to Weber guys, I bet they'll have a nice collection of stock e-tubes that you can play around with. I know what you mean about the problem solving, keep it up! -

I've got Obert e-tubes and Hypojets in my orange car, and the fueling control as well as driveability has tremendously increased. Get yourself some 05 e-tubes and H28 Hypojets to start, I think Keith accepts returns in the unlikely case that you're disappointed. The nice thing is that if you want to change jetting, you can swap with Keith instead of buying more and more jets. -
Oh, and funny story on those old-looking twice pipes. I helped a fellow Z-owner remove the intake and exhaust on his '73 in order to install a header and round-tops. He was generous enough to donate the exhaust to me, and I agreed as long as it fit in my car. The car is an '01 Accord Coupe. I've hauled two engines in the same car (on separate occasions), many sets of wheels, and countless parts. Who needs a truck?
-
As promised, I've started working on the orange car again! The transmission is out as well as the exhaust and induction system. The throwout bearing was seized, confirming my suspicions of the noise... I'll try not to go too crazy with while-I'm-at-it, so I'll be reinstalling the tranny with a fresh clutch and related parts. I've also decided to re-do the exhaust, going back to the stock manifold from which I'll just do a single 2.5" pipe. The big header with twice pipes showed a loss in power and was too loud, thus the decision. I've done some adjustments to the carbs on the bench as well. I'm looking forward to getting this Z back on the road! This is a sight I see far too often! Trans out, release bearing removed. Some new parts I had lying around. Twice-twice pipes, I'll be selling both...

Sounds like your e-tube is dumping too much air into your main circuit. Does your e-tube have holes above the fuel level? If so, plug those. You may need to play with your air jet as well. -
1970 240z Project (Very slow, money is tight)

Love your friends' art! -
Another issue I ran into is that the car has some sort of old-school coilovers with custom strut mounts. Somehow, my rear camber is +0.5 degrees. Front is -0.5 degrees so OK but not great. I talked to Don of DP Racing about his bolt-in camber plates which I really like, but from what he told me the shank of the Tokico HPs needs to be turned down to match the 5/8" spherical bearing. Not sure if I want to deal with that or not...
-
Holy crap! I've never seen another like the one I have, until now. It came with the car and I have no idea who made it... Mine has a crack and a chip, but since I have no idea where to get one, I'm running with it. I'll ask to PO, but I'm betting he's got a similar story. Sorry for the crappy pics, I don't have a whole lot of them. Second photo is not mine, but I do not know who to credit...

Cylinder heads with cams - new source? PowerTorque (OReilly Auto)
Leon replied to NewZed's topic in Nissan L6 Forum
I bought a complete P90 in great shape for $100 earlier this year (thanks Ray!)... probably an anomaly. -
The wipe pattern is correct, judging by looking at the other side of the rocker arm and comparing it to the rest of the good lobes/rockers. The only thing I can think of that can cause this damage is a foreign object getting in there. I did a valve adjustment after about 60-70 miles on the engine and they were all tight, although I didn't notice any lobe damage. I noticed the damage on the second adjustment, at about 300 miles on the engine. The lobe in question was loose (couple thou) when I checked clearances, so that could've contributed to the problem. Good point on the heat aspect of lack of oil. I haven't noticed any blackening, just worn metal. The engine now has approximately 1000 miles so I can take some more photos next time I take the cover off. Weird... I made sure my oil level was full so that shouldn't be an issue. Leaning towards foreign object, I'll post photos after pulling the cam and rockers. I'll have to play around a bit to get the cam out with the engine still in the car.
-
Hmm, after further investigation my wipe patterns look to be dead on. Maybe it was an oiling issue, but seeing only one lobe/rocker destroyed is strange. The next plan is to pop off the valve cover and crank the engine over to make sure oil comes out of each lobe.

Nice work, Clive! Engine bay looks very clean. Any vids?

No worries, we all have our preferences! Hope the BBQ went well, I'd like to make the next one. Way easier than JCCS, not to mention a lot less stressful... We got home about an hour ago, made good time coming from SLO. I've got a checklist of things to go through and need to send Isky a cam core so I can get this thing back on the road quickly and finally drive it like I stole it!

Thanks Takashi! Here's a shot I took at the end of the show. I had a chance to take a few pictures. Here are some favorites: This was probably the highlight of the show for me, and I had to make a huge double-take when I saw it. A '67 Prince Skyline in race trim! Woody Cressida! A sweet Honda N600 with an awesome motor-swap that I don't even remember what it was... Subaru 360 Mirco, had no idea these awesome things existed! And a very nicely done engine compartment...
