Oh, and Alex731 stopped by today. Good meeting you, Alex!

A few updates... While prepping the ZX 5-speed to go in, I installed the new speedo gear I got to match the 4.375 rear diff. In doing so, I did a comparison of speedo gear housings since I had both on hand and was curious. Old gear (blue, 18T for 3.7 diff) vs. new (purple, 21T for 4.38 diff) Here is the slot, which must be indexed correctly in order to be able to tighten down the housing to the tranny. It will not index correctly if the wrong housing is used (will be 180 degrees out). Here are the two speedo housings, the one holding the blue gear works with gears up to 19 teeth (3.9 diff) while the one with the orange gear is for 20 teeth (4.11) and above. The slots are on the left side, as pictured, thus the right side of the gears (as pictured) mesh with the worm gear in the trans. The gears will not mesh well if installed in the incorrect housing. As you can see, the purple pinion is installed incorrectly, in the housing from the blue gear. The right (meshing) side sticks out way too far and will not fit properly into the transmission since it's offset to the opposite side. New gear going in... The slot is indexed correctly Done! Finally got to work on wiring up EDIS. Before any wiring work though, I finally installed the ZX fan to make sure it worked. I had a thread about it a while a go, which I'll update as well. I got a little cheap-o fusebox from amazon.com to power the EDIS module, coil packs, Megajolt and the WBO2. Added jumpers, probably not a great idea but works for now. More to come, hopefully tomorrow!

Wow, time flies... I bought a used ZX fan a while back and finally installed it today. Works great! 240Z to 280ZX fan comparison Installed

The car is back on the road as of a couple of weeks ago! Time flies... I had a bit of an issue installing Dave's billet linkage, the arms did not clamp tightly on the main throttle rod. I "solved" this by clamping them in my bench vice and going at it with a hacksaw that I had lying around. The blade was thick enough to cut a wider slot in the clamps so that they actually stay in place when pushed. I went to the Brisbane ZONC show on 7/28, which was a great time. I loved ZCG's black Hakosuka, I need to get me one of those some day. We won some delicious home-made jam at the raffle, too. Still have some left in the fridge, better make some more biscuits this weekend. Mmmm, biscuits... Ok, on to current Z-stuff. I picked up a Dapper Lighting Classic HID kit yesterday, thanks Ben! Fantastic customer service by the way, and it's great that they're local. I want to get some big things done before driving down to JCCS in September: (1) Install late ZX 5-speed, Fidanza flywheel and new clutch, along with new shifter bushings (2) Install R200 CLSD (need new gear oil) (3) Install EDIS along with the ZX clutch fan, get it working and tune with my laptop (which I'm in the middle of "fixing", needs a new battery too) (4) Install HIDs (5) New carb jetting - custom jets from Keith Franck And then there are little things, like: (6) Buy and install new door and hatch weatherstripping (7) Fix interior vents (8) Wrap fuel rail in a nicer way (9) Get Nissan thermostat and fill up with new coolant (10) Plug extra thermostat housing outlet (11) Re-sync carbs and install new filters (12) New floor carpet (13) Bleed clutch and brakes, re-adjust rears (14) Polish up paint and windows Jeebus, so much to do, so little time. I feel like taking a week off from work. Time to start crossing things off of the to-do list, one-by-one... 29 days to go, hopefully a lot of new updates to come!

Nice vid, sounds similar to my twin 2" system. I have 2 glasspacks per pipe, turned around so the louvers face the other way. I've yet to dyno it, but will soon. I dynoed with a single and stock manifold so I'll have something to compare to. I agree on the sound, it's good but not exactly what I wanted. No problem, I was more curious in the type of merge collector you use (when browsing through the SPD link). I can handle placement and design.

E36 M3 Suspension in a 240z
Leon replied to peej410's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Nice job getting it done! -
Thanks for the link! The duals on my car right now are okay, but a bit loud and raspy for my taste. If I were to build another exhaust system it would be a single 3" with a nice muffler and resonator. With that said, I always wanted twice pipes and I'm happy I tried them out. The car is mainly used on the street with very occasional autoX use, but I am planning to run it on the track in the future. John, any recommendations on which merge collector you choose for a street/autoX car? I'm thinking a parallel 2-1 Y-collector with a megaphone following when I get to building a single system. I'll have to find good spots for the WBO2 as well.

Those results are great. If you're burning oil, it's the valve stem seals. They won't show up in a compression check (obviously).

You have either an early 260Z or possibly a late 240Z 3-wire tach. Should be easy to make it work (one connection to coil negative, plus power and ground). EDIT: follow beerman's post.
-
John, I'm running two 2" pipes off a Nissan Motorsports header and have been considering going to a single 3". I don't trust an exhaust shop to make a "proper" secondary collector and I know that Nissan used to make them to go along with the header. Do you know if there is still a way to get those 2-1 collectors or must it be custom fabbed?
-
Not only the font, but the redline as well. 8/73 is right at the end of 240Z manufacturing. The 260Z received a 3-wire tach as part of the change-over to electronic ignition. Some very late 240Z's might have gotten 3-wire tachs as well. I remember this being discussed on classiczcars before.

He needs an input (pinion) flange not the half-shaft axles.

What's a fair price for this guy's patch panels?
Leon replied to TieFighter88's topic in Non Tech Board
FWIW, this guy is selling his for $75. -
Right, those would be the main issues.

There will always be fuel out of suspension, it is called the "Tau layer", and it will contribute to an uneven mixture. A V8 (downdraft, central manifold) does not compare to the L6 (sidedraft), your analogy is not applicable. Uneven runners also screw up the resonance tuning effect and may add some extra vibration due to power variations between cylinders. FWIW...

Loose wires in my 240, what are they for?
Leon replied to Laurel1800's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
The FSM is your friend. A quick look tells me that the green and white wires could possibly be for your turn signal flasher. -
Hey, it was about as safe as I could make it!
-
I'm with Zed, sounds like a lack of fuel in both cases. Check fuel pressure while driving. Just make sure that everything is tightly secured. FWIW, I had an issue that only popped up on the freeway. I'd be driving along just fine until I got to a hill. It would start misfiring and loosing power. It was tough to tell whether it was ignition or fuel related, since it appeared to coincide with warmer weather. However, the problem continued to get worse so I attached a fuel pressure gauge to my windshield and confirmed that pressure was dropping to zero right before the condition appeared! I replaced the filter by the tank and deleted the factory helper pump (260Z) and all was good again.

Simply awesome! I would love to own (or at least drive ) an NSX someday.

There is no good (performance) reason to mount the turbos as far from the energy source as possible.
-
Good points, but I do like how the seat brackets raise the front of the seat up. Gives me better thigh support.
-
Damn, I'm taking waaay too long to finish my MJLJ install! BTW, this is Derek's setup.
-
Great input, Stepan. I will definitely look into Kirkey. Got any photos of your seat? Thanks John, that is another good alternative.
-
Any luck, Stepan? I installed some Nismo knock-off seats in my Z and they don't quite cut it. They're too small for me, while at the same time placing me higher in the car. Good for someone below 6' but not for me. I'm planning to sell them off once I find a good alternative. It's tough to find a comfy seat that also sits low enough to fit me (6'2", 190lb), especially with a helmet. I really like the classy, classic race seat look (a'la "Speed" Seat from ZCCJDM) but am worried about comfort, not to mention price. Besides, I'm leary of buying seats without trying them out first. I did sit in a Corbeau A4 at a local speed shop and really liked them comfort wise. The back was taller, placing the headrest in the right spot and the shoulder bolsters fit me better as well. However, I'm betting that they're going to sit me pretty high in the cabin. Still searching...
