I too believe there is money out there in the automotive repair business but you have to have a lot of knowledge about electronics and how they work. We have a guy at work who is absolutly the smartest technican I have ever met. I gaurentee he is makeing over 100K on salary. The reason hes on salary is because hes the guy who all the other techs go to when we cant figure something out! So theres no way for him to make flat rate. He has his own shop at home too, which has 2 stalls with hoist and he works at night on cars. So to say the least he's not hurting for $$$! Im just glad that he lets me work for him for cash on the side! From what I have seen the more training you get the better you get paid. Its not how much work you do its what you know! I am trying to get myself to the drivabilty side of the auto repair business because thats where I think the money is.......anyone can check for loose suspension parts, do maintance work, and recalls! This should take care of any traction problems you were having and should stop you from breaking axles! Looks good! 8) Guy

Now I know were talking about CA here and the cost of living out there is higher that most places in the USA but......... Im calling B.S. on your friend. I graduated with a 2 year degree in Automotive Technolgy, almost 2 years ago and I sure as hell aint making $25/hour, even on flat rate! Unless your friend is like some car god and all the teachers at his school are saying hes a genius I really doubt he making that much. Sure the ASE certifications help but I really cant see any dealership paying that much for a guy right out of school, especially just a Nissan dealership. And hes not beating flat rate either to make $25 per hour. Not only does he not have the experiece to beat flat rate but he more than likely doesnt have the tools to beat flat rate. Not to mention at big dealship more than 50% of the work is warrenty and warrenty pays like crap! For example(I work at a big Dodge dealership) To put a set of lifters in a 2.7Liter 24 valve V6 Intreped warrenty pays 1.4 hours...were as Mitcheles time AKA "customer pays" time is 4.1 hours. Yeah so as you can see warrenty pays like $hit! Now if he were to go to school for say Porsche I could see that. Porchse from what I understand only takes graduates from UTI and you have to have 100% attendence, 4.0 gpa, and a few other small things to even get the offer to go to their extra schooling program. (This is what was told to me by a UTI graduate that used to work with me). Guy

Yeah this is extremly true..... I work in Appleton and live near Shawano, which is about 45 minutes north of Appleton. Guys at work will say "ya Im going up north this weekend" and I ask where and they'll say "Shawano Lake" 45 minutes north is not "up north"!!! Guy

I know this is just a joke.........but if anyone wants to know....... A FOB is a remote keyless entry remote. We call them "KEY FOBS" at work. I dont remember what FOB stands for though or if it even does stand for something? Guy

Same thing happend at work(Im an auto tech @ a dodge dealership) after Bush won. A guy comes in with his 04' Ram 1500.... Him "yeah I need a bumper sticker removed from my truck" Service writer "ok, now you didnt put it on any of the painted parts on your truck did you?" Him "Yeah I put it on the tailgate" Service writer "well thats going to be really hard to get off with out hurting the paint" Him "no you dont understad, I REALLY need to get this sticker off" Service writer "oh you voted for Kerry didnt you..." Him " " The whole service department got a good laugh out of that one! Im not sure if he got it take off though? Guy

If hes not sure whats wrong with his car then, yes the internet can help fix his car. Once you have your valve lash set you could check compression on each cylinder to see if all your valves are opening the same(same compression would indicate this). If you have low compression on multiple cylinders this could indicated a toasted cam or something wrong in your valve train. Guy

I tried that same paint on some of my interior parts(before I bought better ones) and it looks good at first but it does chip away very easy like "innerware" said. Its a good temporary fix but that paint wont last. I can tell you this from experiece. Guy

Ok I guess you got me there .....but around here they(konigs) arent too popular among the ricer crowd Guy
-
Those prices for the "wheel & Tire Pkg" better be for 4 wheels & Four Tires! They are a pretty "run of the mill" tuner type wheel though like Dead Roman said. Not saying thats a bad thing but I personally like having different wheels than the "ricer" crowd does. IMHO Guy

If you ever look at how much of what you pay is tax and how much is actual profit you would be very surprized. Gas stations wouldnt stayin business if you didnt buy stuff from inside the "store". Ask any gas station owner this. Here's the way I look at it....you have to buy gas so there not much you can do but filler up! Yeah I drive a truck that gets 19mpg so I know about filling up! Since I live 40miles from work and drive about 350miles per week....... so thats about $37.76/week (@ $2.05 a gallon) in gas! I think OPEC is the one thats got us by the balls! Guy

hehe...Im sorry I had to laugh at this one. No disrespect intended. *A long block is an engine with the block, rotating assembley(pistons, cranks, rods, cam), plus the heads and valve train. *A short block is a engine with just the block and rotating assembley *A "turn key" motor is everything from oil pan to intake and carb if it has one. If you're going to race (legally), take your plate off
80LS1T replied to CruxGNZ's topic in Non Tech Board
I think that wavier that you have to sign is actually for the track saying that "if you crash your car at their track its not their fault" Guy -

80LS1T replied to CruxGNZ's topic in Non Tech Board
I read all 3 pages of the topic. The guy claiming it says that they did drop him from their insurance. I too dont understand why because from what I understand your arent covered anyways when your racing(on a track) or out on a frozen lake. Those 2 things Im pretty sure arent covered for sure. However I will now be pulling my plate when I finally get down to the track! Guy -
Im not sure how you took that comment but it was very sarcastic. There is no way I would buy a LSD unit for $700 when for $500 more I could just get a Quafie. Guy
-
Oh thank god someone brought this up! I too have been feeling the same thing. I try not to post though if I think it will piss someone off. I just keep it to myself! Hey David, just order a LSD unit from NISMO.......I mean come on their only like $700! Guy

Great looking V8Z.....all you would need to do is put the correct size tire/rim combo on the front so it doesnt look so goofy with the tires sticking way out there! Guy
-
You mean you want to replace the whole rear tail light assembely? All you have to do is remove that back trim panel, get an 8mm deepwell socket and take off teh 6 nuts holding on the metal braket on the inside fo the car. Once the bracket is off and the wiring is disconnected just pop out the whole assembely! It might stick at first because the tail light gasket but those 8 nuts are the only thing holding it in. Guy

Aren't you broke? You barely have enough money to rebuild that L28ET, how can you afford a RHD JDM 240Z.....from Japan? Guy

What is your Top Speed. On or Off Track.
80LS1T replied to v80z's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
In my 1980 280ZX with the old L28E I hit 130mph@ about 65000RPM's with the stock R180 and stock 195/70/14's. I had a rising rate fuel pressure regulator, headers and full mandrel exhaust( I think it was 2.5", but I cant remember for sure?)......... with the new LT1/T56 in there....I've only hit 125 once and I still had most of 5th and all of 6th to go, I cant remember what kind of RPMs I was at? I need to balance my tires bad and make sure my driveline angle is ok before I go any faster, not to mention get a driveshaft loop! It was extremely stable at that speed. Its lowered about 1.5" with 225/45/17's and the body/areo kit is not installed yet. I also have headlight covers and a rear spoiler for it. This is all getting install this winter along with paint! Im sure I can go faster but I need to get some parts on it before I do! Guy -
60PSI is deffinetly not ok for a compression test results. That would be ok for a running compression but not for an enginen that is not running. I would make sure the timing chain is on right. I dont know if that would cause such low compression though? Guy

How can I hook AN fittings up to my LT1 fuel rail?
80LS1T replied to 80LS1T's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Can I just buy the -6AN fittings and put those on the hard lines? The reason I ask is because the lines are not the same size. I think one is 7/16" and the other is 5/16". So a -6AN is is 3/8" fitting So basically its right in between the two sizes? Guy -
First off there is not a GTR manual...its JTR(Jags That Run). This manual that he is refering to is for the GEN 1 Z's not the GEN 2, however it is a very usefull book for understanding the basic things needed with a V8 swap into a Z. Next you need to do a search. There is tons of info on this site about V8 swaps and there a a pretty good handful of us 280ZX guys with V8's. Look up "Ross C" , "80LT1" "danc" "spedsk8r" "zeeboost", we have all done the V8 conversions and they all seem to be a little different. At this point I would have to recommend the LS1 engine. It is becoming extremly popular and parts are only getting cheap for it! Plus it makes a butt load of HP/TQ stock and the power band is huge! I wish I had gone that way. The LT1 is great engine and with the LS1 out there it makes parts for the LT1 even cheaper than the LS1 because everyone wants the LS1 stuff! Both engines are good swap canidates for a 280ZX, however the LS1 is a GEN III block and mounting will have to be fabricated. The LT1 still uses the GEN I mounting position so there are mounts out there that you can buy. Guy

80LS1T replied to 80LS1T's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Mark Im not sure what a compression fitting is? Do you have to flare the line after you get that sleeve on the line? Im thinking that this will be the way to go since it looks like it will be cheaper. Guy -

TTT Hey Wheelman ya out there? If you got a pic of yours installed that would be great. Im just trying to figure out how these attach to the fuel rail or stock lines? Thanks, Guy
