So I'm gearing up to try to drive the Z 1.5 hours from our shop to my new house. I've got almost all of the bases covered, but I'm concerned about my tranny... It's supposedly an "A" style 5spd out of a 76 280z, but 5th doesn't work for me. I can hold it in 5th and it'll sometimes work, other times it'll grind and pop out. My concern and reason for this thread is some grinding I have going on. It only happens when decelerating. Flat coasting is usually fine, and acceleration is fine. I had a passenger stick his head out, and it sounds like its coming from the tranny, so I don't THINK it's the diff. Does it sound like the symptoms of a bad throwout bearing, or something more serious inside the tranny? Is it something I should take care of before trying to drive it home, or do you think it'll be ok temporarily? I just had the tranny out to replace a bad front cover gasket, so I'm not too keen on dropping it again if I'm not sure of the problem. Ideas, suggestions?

Yup, supercharged indeed. There is a F-body option. RWD v6 Camero bud, the aussies even have a supercharged bolt on for them if you can find em. It does ok, has kept me happy so far as a great first car, but the gas mileage is teh poo.

Just get what you like, who cares what others think. There are several guys on here rocking flat black paint jobs and they look amazing, so it's in no way "ghetto". I'll be running one too till I can afford paint.

Well thanks to my parents being technologically challenged, I didn't get a video. They didn't have EITHER of the camera batteries charged. Yay! I got my tail lights back in (reverse lights work now, sweet!), got the radiator padded and mounted, got the fenders partially bolted on, got my passenger seat reinstalled, and patched the leaky RR tire (nail). The drive went well, other than the grinding, and 5th still not working. At first I thought the grinding might be a lack of fluid in the diff (still need to check), but now I'm thinking it may be a faulty throwout bearing. I only get it when decelerating, and sometimes I feel some grindyness when the clutch is in. Other than that it was fun, got up to 5k rpm in 1st and 2nd, and man did it sound mean! Can't wait to get a video.

Would the best way, assuming we have to design it, be to give them a CAD model? You might ask them if they can even make stuff based off CAD, or if they are just hack-and-copy creators. I can think of several CAD gurus around there that might have a little fun designing a header and having it actually mass produced (don't look at me though, I'm amateur at best).

So the verdict is to plug the outlet at the back of the block if not using the heater core then? Good to know, I have it going back into the inlet too

Yeah I'll probably end up using timeserts eventually. Well I've gotten done what I wanted to so far, so tomorrow I'll probably take it for a drive and get a video, maybe even get the hood on with some extra bolts laying around! I got the front cover gasket replaced on the tranny, and so far no leaks! Thank goodness for acetone to remove the 30 year old caked on gasket. I got my gas tank fixed up and back in the car. The pinholes are welded up and epoxied, and the whole thing is now rustoleum painted. I now have fresh gas going to the carbs, and boy do they like it much better! Not sure yet if the fuel sender works. I haven't put much gas in yet, but it's reading just barely below "E". I should probably take the sender out and run it up and down to make sure it reads. List of things to take care of before trying to drive the car home: - Right rear tire goes flat overnight, look into it - Get hood and fenders fully bolted on - Finish mounting the radiator with a bike innertube for padding - Possibly get a 240z airbox, hate to run open carbs 1.5 hours back home - Put back in the tail lights - Bolt back on the fuel door & passenger seat

If it's only going to be a log style instead of tubular, they'd better be offering it pretty cheap. I was expecting this to be a tubular GB.

I used to dream about retrofitting a DC-10 into a flying house type setup, with full autopilot etc. Then there were the plans to build/aquire a submarine and have a crew to man it etc. Just thought I'd throw those out while we're being crazy

Pretty sure the gas station would be responsible. Lots of cars with stock superchargers and turbos require premium to not ping. If they mix them up or lie it would be their fault. A friend of mine owns a gas station, and water got into his diesel somehow, and he had to pay for repairs and cleaning for all the rigs that got his tainted gas. Should be the same in the case of fibbing about premium.

True, but the problem arises when you want to increase bore (no longer stock piston size), stroke it (different pin height), and keep dishes for high boost ($$$).

It couldn't bend a valve?

You DO NOT want your valves to float. You're lucky nothing bad happened. I've heard horror stories of bent valves from going over 7500 on a stock valvetrain.

That's been discussed before (probably b/c of this same pic, lol), it's just a personal preference for racing. Similar to designing 70mph right at the top of a speedometer so you know where you're at with a glance on the highway. Loving all the wheels. Can you guys start posting sizes along with your pics too?

I didn't look, but I'm sure it would have. I didn't paint the inside though, so it would just re-rust after bout an hour or two of being exposed.
