  1. I just managed to get around to fixing up the Hilux I have, and just had to post now I have it going, it's been something of an annoy ance for the past while as different bits wouldn't fit, so now I have it going, I just felt compelled to brag Some time back my 1985 Hilux (4runner stateside) carb got out of adjustment, and I couldn't get in back in to a running condition. It didn't take long for me to decide I wasn't going to fuss with the insanely complicated water + electronic choke and mixture control carb. So I went onto the local NZ auction site and bought a couple of Weber downdraft carbs I had heard of being successfully used to re-carb toyota 3Y engines. BUT, when they arrived and I checked the bases, I found they needed a $70 carb base adapter plate to be used, and I am too cheap to spend that kind of coin on a old work truck, thats best saved for toys. So I sold one on and the other is still sitting on a shelf in the shed. and I got a pair of SU HIF44 carbs instead. Theres a picture of the engine bay of my Hilux as an attachment Notice the werd aglomeration of strange bits hanging off the intake manifold? Thats a HIF44 SU carb (half of a Rover V8 3.5L system) dangling off three bits of scrap steel welded to a "T" section of 2" dia stainless steel pipe the throttle arm on the carb is off the orgininal toyota carb, but attacked with an angle grinder to allow it to fit on the SU without hitting the SU's side. the throttle cable was cut and a piece of wire spliced into it, and a new cable holder made out of scrap angle iron to shift the cable body to a new position where it can activate the throttle arm with the right angle to maximise the arm travel. quite a mess... but it works! I think I'll call it the Frankenmotor
  2. I think I can solve that one! Spray a stream at a screen door, and it's in still air, Spray a stream at a screen with a big ass leaf blower funnelling a load of air through the screen, then the stream is pushed through the screen instead of dribbling down. whats the velocity of air through a carb? There's probably plenty there to pull the fuel through the mesh all nicely atomised even at idle speeds.
  3. I much prefer the local Trademe.co.nz that NZ uses instead of ebay, Ebay never really took off here, one nice thing about trademe is no re-list fees. Ebay only waive the relist fees if the item sells on the second go, Trademe lets you roll it over multiple times until it finally sells.
  4. LinkECU have a great aftersales service and if you ring them they'll probably be able to pull previous customers specs up off the computer and give you all the details of what works and what doesn't. They're in Chch, so nott a huge phone bill like calling some US company I'd also try asking on the Skylines Downunder site too, NZ and Aust use Link more than the Yanks do, and Hybridz membership is skewed towards the US, with MegaSquirt, Wolf and others dominating, Link is hardly mentioned on here.
  5. sort of... TIG uses an electric arc from a handpiece to melt the pieces being worked on where the arc touches down instead of using a flame. If you're used to oxy/acet I hear TIG is simple to learn as many of the skills are similar, manuvering the fill rod for one, but where on Oxy/acet heat is controlled by moving the flame distance from the work to the light blue flame tip either into or out of the flame, TIG uses a foot or thumb control to increase or decrease cueent while arc distance remains constant.
  6. I know offroad 4x4 club members who coat with POR15... many's the rock that has chipped or broken without creaking the POR, and on cracked diff cases the only craks in the POR are along the edge of the broken metal where the metal itself serparated... it's damn tough stuff!
  7. The traditional way to hunt drop bears is a wizards hat made of 1/8th inch steel with a well padded interior and a barbed harpoon blade welded to the peak. I think you can imagine how they are used... I hope you have strong neck muscles to take the impact keep your spine straight!
  8. you do have to be careful theres no place to strap a saddle, so you straddle their neck and tuck your feet into the pouch for stability, like giving a little kid a ride on your shoulders... The problem is that on the jump as the roo takes off, your balls get mashed between your pelvis and the roo's neck... Most roo-riders had surgery as a kid and now sing high soprano
  9. Mercruiser = outboard motor maker. check out the boating section of ebay
  10. next up they'll probably try to ban Blacks...
  11. He is, I've seen the banner ads myself!
  12. pretty edible tho... just like those toothy reptiles in the NT.
  13. sounds odd... why only black? cali being cali I would have expected them to ban ALL cars?
  14. There're pics of a guy lapping pukekohe racetrack with 20's on a S30 on Zclub.co.nz, so 18's aren't the largest you can go, if you have problems with 18's maybe a KaleAutoCo lowering kit would work?
  15. drop bears? ride a roo to school? it's still a few days until april 1st you know... you're a little early mate.
  16. I wonder if as an additional turbulence reducer, if having the waste gas pipe join the downpipe where the pipe sizes up by at least the area of the waste gas pipe? say a 2.5" tubo exit, and the waste pipe joins at an expansion where the downpipe goes up to 2.75", on it's way to a 3" exhaust/muffler system?
  17. same reason we have LHD rubbish and recycling trucks, through those tend to be stand-to-drive ones with throttle and all by hand rather than foot.
  18. but if you just varnish it, it's ART! the bloody Tate gallery in england is mad... almost as mad as this fellow...
  19. looking at the front hubs, they look more of a toyota pattern than what I've seen on the 4wd navaras here in NZ, so that could be a datsun sitting on a hilux chassis, a real hybrid
  20. could you jack your sponsor into a AU trip? maybe as a final fling type thing?
  21. V8 will be WELL over your budget going by past stories. ZXT donor engine would probably be best value for money balancing power vs cash
  22. I wonder what you'd be doing on an aussie strip, seems they do worse over here and kiwi cars do better over there...
  23. Nissan Anti Pollution System. if you hit the search with "NAPS" theres a fair bit of detail on them. they tended to be JDM only, my '79 ZX has a NAPS badge on the boot.
  24. Grim and I had a beer-fueled internet engineering brainstorming session once on how to do it with a SR20 FWD motor, an engineering shop, and a lot of money and time. Possible? Yes, Easy? HELL NO! Cheap? only if you're Bill Gates or Warren Buffet and figure a mill as petty change.
