That's the usual sales guy around here cyrus, and then they get worse from there. They're selling magazines, dry car wash, vacuums, candy, etc. All sorts of crap. The JWs haven't really been around since I've been here. Couple of Mormons, but they're generally really easy to get rid of. I think I've had at least 6 Democrats at the door for one reason or another, including the guy who sent me over the edge the other day, who was one of the "I'm not a solicitor" group. I can slam the door in someone's face just fine, but I'd really rather not have them knock in the first place. Haven't seen hide nor hair of a Republican. Not sure if it's just because they're smart enough to know what "soliciting" means or if it's just because of my location in Seattle. Probably the latter.

Anybody out there running 38mm exhaust valves?
JMortensen replied to clarkspeed's topic in 6 Cylinder Z Forums
Uhhh, are you sure about that DAW? I thought your average L28 came with 35mm exhaust valves. How to Modify backs me up... -
I work from home, but more importantly, these guys do not take no for an answer. One guy was selling a vacuum that worked really well on deep carpets. I have hardwood floors. I explained that I wasn't interested. He said it might work on my couches. I said no and started to close the door. He said that his manager was gonna get pissed if I didn't let him show me the vaccuum. I said I have no interest at all in a vacuum, sorry. He then called me a dick and asked what the hell my problem was. At this point I said "Oh, you know what maybe your right... I am a dick" and slammed the door in his face. They're all like that here. If someone would approach and I would say no and they would go away, this post wouldn't be here (and maybe if there weren't 3 or 4 a week). I'm thinking this will work for 3 days or so. It can't possibly actually keep people from knocking. Not here. Oh well, at least it brought a little smile to me and the person who works at Staples.

Mike, one thing is for sure, either this kid is going to thank you in few years or he's going to hate you forever. Gotta love those squirrely kids!

Man...Reinstalling Tranny By Myself.....Not Fun
JMortensen replied to slownrusty's topic in Drivetrain
I got a pilot bushing that was WRONG from the local autoparts store last time. the ID was about .005 too small. Really frustrating figuring that one out. If you've ever seen a professional mechanic do this they are NOT gentle. Grab the tail shaft and wiggle and shake the crap out of it while pushing the trans forward. Also Mike Kz is right, if you lean the engine back then it is easier to line up. On my L6 I loosen the motor mounts and let the engine tilt back and rest on a 2x4 set between the valve cover and the firewall. I always lift my trans on a normal floor jack. The Nissan trans has a little nub that sticks off the bottom and you can just set that nub in the cup of the jack and it won't fall out. -
The violations of the cease fire agreement occured as recently as the day before we invaded. If that's not "now" enough for you, then you're not dealing with reality. Clinton RAN from Mogadishu, none of the troops wanted to pull out, but Clinton didn't know how to run a war, so he ran. Read some interviews with the soldiers who were there. They were PISSED. Sure, he'll bomb Bosnia, and he was lucky that no ground troops were needed there, because as soon as Americans started getting shot up en masse, he would have pulled us out of there too. If Clinton had gone into Iraq in 1998, there would have been NO debate. It would have been the right thing to do, and no one would have complained (except maybe France). Instead he just fired a couple cruise missiles and called it a day. Also the same thing he did to Afghanistan. I still think no matter what country we went to deal with as a result of UN sanctions or a direct attack on us or whatever, YOU WOULDN'T LIKE IT. That's the impression I'm getting. So it's another one of those situations where people say "we should be somewhere else" which actually means that "we shouldn't meddling abroad" which actually means "terrorism is a law enforcement issue" which actually means "lets huddle in a corner and hope we don't get attacked again". EDIT--If you are truly one of the few who believe we should have kept more troops in Afghanistan and kicked more ass there, I can appreciate that. Here in Seattle, with all the freaky left wing nut jobs, I saw protestors EVERY DAY who didn't want us in Afghanistan after 911. You can still see them EVERY WEEKEND protesting Iraq.

If it is an N47 off of an L28, then it should have the larger valves and combustion chamber. If it's off of an L24 Maxima, then it would be the smaller valve smaller chamber design. Visually, if the combustion chamber doesn't have much shape, then it is the L28. If it looks like a kidney bean or a heart then it is from the Maxima. -
That is a good point. But, if you got a tranny designed for it there are a number of 4x4 front diffs that are built for reverse rotation, probably the easiest to make work would be a Ford 9" housing with an 8.8 reverse rotation 3rd member since custom housings are easy to come by.

Phil, if you haven't seen this already, you should check it out: http://www.albinoblacksheep.com Go to Video Files, then watch Protesting the Protestors Parts I and II. Very interesting to see what people really have to say.

Lots of ships will back out of a docking slip by turning the engine backwards. I'm not really too sure of much more than that, but I would guess it might be a way of getting the ship to back up without having to have a gigantic transmission attached to the engine. Not sure if the engine just connects directly to the propeller or if there is something else in there on most ships. If you were to do that on a car engine you'd also need to reverse the distributor, so I would think this is something that works better on mechanically injected diesels. EDIT--I suppose you'd also have to do something to get the coolant flowing since the water pump wouldn't work right. Also in a car you'd have a 5 speed in reverse and 1 forward speed, or whatever your trans was backwards, unless you swapped in a Saab trans (I think they spin backwards)

I know of no Nissan trans that has a countershaft with separate gears on it. They're all one piece that I've seen. This means that even if you could locate a different 1st gear and 2nd gear cluster, you'd also have to have a countershaft that matched them. At that point, you might as well just get the transmission that has the ratios closest to what you want in the first place. Sounds like you might have a truck trans. You can see if the ratios match anything listed here: http://www.geocities.com/z_design_studio/transmission.html

Hey Mike, you're missing the point. LaRouche is obviously right, those Neo-Cons have you fooled into thinking that you're actually doing something for our country's security. What we need a vast canal system in this country. And Bush orchestrated 911 to get an oil pipeline in Afghanistan, and Saddam was going to ruin our economy by selling oil for Euros. I learned it all in LaRouche's pamphlet: "Children of Satan - The 'Ignoble Liars' Behind Bush's No-Exit War". What a page turner...

Yeah Kevin, some of us read all of LaRouche's literature and just didn't believe it. Your choice though...

Please don't build your motor based on a very short post I made about a friend of mine. He loved that motor, he really did. He's a weird guy. He had other stuff on it to make it work. Like a hacked ECU firing additional injectors into the plenum. He also had some weird type of home made ignition that used a modified distributor to fire 3 RX7 coils instead of the normal setup. When you opened the hood you would question his sanity with all the crap going on in there, but he was able to make it all work. BTW - he's also the guy who converts diesels to run on vegetable oil. His are not the footsteps to follow, because he is a weird freaky mechanical genius type, and when he hits a roadblock he will find some very strange ways around it. If you aren't like him, I suggest you build a regular motor.

Anybody out there running 38mm exhaust valves?
JMortensen replied to clarkspeed's topic in 6 Cylinder Z Forums
I've been running L28's with notched blocks for the last 10 years, but I'm not running a larger exhaust valve. I was just doing it for flow around that side of the valve. You can go up to the fire ring line on the headgasket, and I went about 75% of the way from the top ring to the top of the head. Never had a headgasket problem. I kinda wonder if you might get better flow out of a smaller valve with more room to flow all the way around it though... -
No kidding. I'm tired of all the self-flaggelation. That's why I keep going back to the Iraq thing. How can we continue with a war when many Americans perceive Iraq to be a loss??? What would happen to our country if we were actually attacked - like really militarily attacked? I swear you'd have a bunch of idiots running in front of the machine guns convinced that they somehow deserved to be shot for being Americans. And you'd have a second larger contingent of people that don't want to make the invaders mad. WTF?!? Good thing you'd have the 140 million gun owners...

With dished pistons and N47 you'll have 8.3:1 and big valves, with E31 you'll have small valves and 8.5:1 compression. Just use the N47. -

The E88s all had mechanical fuel pumps AFAIK, because they came on 71-74 cars, which all had carbs. If I'm wrong, then just use an electronic fuel pump and just don't worry about the mechanical fuel pump. If you take a picture of the E88 we can tell you if it is the small chamber (will give you about 8.5:1 compression, same as an E31) or the open chamber (8.3:1 compression with the dished pistons). Either way it's not going to be a very high compression engine. You should be able to run 87 octane NO PROBLEM. Really doesn't sound like an E88 to me though. Have you SEEN it, or is someone telling you what it is? Have you got the L-series engine calculator? That would really help you about now... -

That thing looks like it dropped a valve and they just stuck a new valve in and put the head back on to me. I've seen engines put holes in the piston from detonation and the chamber didn't look that bad. If that happened from detonation that was a lot of detonation for a long time. The E88s all came with carbs. Even if you had a FI head, SUs bolt right up, so no worries. If you use an E31 head on an L28 with flat top pistons you'll be really detonation prone already (ask me how I know) and any sharp edges in the combustion chamber are going to have to be dealt with. You'll have to have that chamber welded up and then reground by hand, very expensive. Get another head is the answer to this one. I'm assuming that is the L24 block, if so no big deal, basically all that stuff is junk and you start over. If that is the L28 you could probably bore it and put new pistons in it, but a machinist could tell you for sure. -
Anybody using a crankcase evacuation setup?

If you do decide to go the exhaust route Mr Gasket has a setup that is about 1/2 the price of the Moroso stuff. -
The Iron Law of Revolution: Never take everything away from a people because then they have nothing to lose. I think we'd end up in WWIII (if we aren't already).

In theory this isolationist stuff is great (right up my alley actually), but I don't know how well it would turn out in practice. I have to think that it is too dangerous to ignore festering terrorist groups around the world, especially now that North Korea has nukes and missiles capable of delivering them to the US. Securing the borders is fine, but we better get Bush's missile defense thing working and in place before we just seal up the borders and turn a blind eye to the rest of the world. The other big problem would be the economic ramifications of isolationism, although I think America is particularly well equipped to make an isolationist stand against the rest of the world. We certainly have better resources at our disposal than most other countries. Better get working on those hydrogen fuel cell cars... I think if we went 1/2 way towards isolationism from the current "get into everyones' business" policy that would be a good thing. Certainly getting our troops out of places where they aren't even appreciated, like Germany, would be a good thing. But as much as I hate to say it, I think totally disengaging from the rest of the world would be a huge mistake. Just trying to be somewhat realistic.
