I have a good used 1 laying around-the oem unit opens at about 6 psi.I got a 10 psi unit from http://atpturbo.com/ and built my own bracket out of some angle iron.

About 10 years ago I was at Thunderhill for an open track day and there was a later model rx7 with a normally asperated 20b running that day.It sounded like a F1 car was coming by.I always lusted for a 20b in my car.

A modern dohc 4 valve engine with a centered spark plug can run 15/1 or 16/1 a/f with no problems.I was riding in a 2008 Subaru STI with some kind of laptop tuning software connected and saw a 16.2/1 at steady 60mph.Alot of it has to do with combustiion chamber design.

A diesel injection pump shop can adjust the fuel rate and dyno check the injection pump. You can advance the injection pump timing too.A good pump shop can rebuild the injectors -usually some power to be had + cleaner burning. If you add a turbo you will need more full to go with the air.The guys with the hopped up diesel trucks usually have an exhaust temp pyrometer to watch exhaust temps.I used to work on the old diesel VW Rabbits-did alot of pump and injector repairs after people would fill them up with gasoline .I stiil have the pump timing tools.Nissan is about the same-old school mechanical injection.

Does the gas tank need to be modified for larger fuel line?
randy 77zt replied to dpuma8's topic in Fuel Delivery
I have earl's 6an push-lok hose on my tank-it slides right on then put a hose clamp on it.There isnt any pressure at this spot. -
Outrageous Moving Violations As Always

I would take a picture of the truck you rented to court and take your chances with the judge.50/50 the judge might let you off.Alot of judges are looking for criminal intent-you were not intending to break the law and you were not being unsafe. My opinion is that the chp is getting out of hand with writing tickets Its all about the money. -
I hate to say this but i think the key to making money as a tradesman is being able to go where the work is at.Problem is that you have no home life living in motel rooms-or working overseas.Keep your mind open to trying something different but still involved in welding-maybe frame fabrication for a racing team?Maybe repair on mining equipment?I wish you luck.

Advice/Suggestions on places to live on the East Coast?
randy 77zt replied to EvilC's topic in Non Tech Board
I dont live on the east coast but the local utiltiy company is always looking for engineers at $100k or so to start.Just saw a 3000 sq/ft house with 3 car garage for $225k.Every place has its positives and negatives. The same $225k house would be $800k to $1mil 80 miles west of here in the san francisco bay area.Being from central cali i cant handle the humidity of the east coast. -
If the ref didnt sign your ticket off your screwed.I used to have a smog license here in california. There are not very many ways to get around the law and your legal bills will end up being more than the car is worth. In california even though your car is too old to have to have bi-annual inspection the law still states thst the car be in original condition. How may 60's muscle cars are oem condition? The LEO'S seem to have a soft spot for american muscle cars and harley davidson motorcycles.Your car's vin# now has a criminal record in california. Please keep us posted on any updates to your problem.

The feds just need to shop on ebay-thats were all the chinese hid kits are at. -
Before i put the turbo motor in my 77 I did a litlle work on the stock l28.Put on new injectors and connectors.Made a good distributor out of 2 that had a good advance curve.Got rid of the cat convertor and put a 2.5" exhaust system on.the car was very fun to drive-would have drove better with a 280zx na trans and 3.9 rear gear.

There is a 71 down the street .Complete car with very straight no rust body.Has not ran in years.Interior dried up from the sun though.Owner wants $1500

I will be selling some toys soon. Its time to start over.Selling my house and getting out .Anyway Mike good luck with the sale.If you get out to cali on your motorcycle look me up.Iam allways ready for a motorcycle ride. -
I have a web camshafts custom cam in my 2960cc l28 turbo and i dont think it would pass an emission test even though i have a vipec v44 ecm with wideband o2 for control.i know in phoenix they are even testing motorcycles at idle only.If you use a stock l28 na cam and have a good modern efi system you should have no problem.Unburnt fuel out the back is money wasted.A good tune on an efi system with wideband o2 should be no problem.I used to have a smog license in california-i have seen well tuned cars with hollow cats pass emissons with good numbers.

deleting auto trans l28et engine oil cooler
randy 77zt replied to captken's topic in Nissan L6 Forum
I just got the oil fliter stud-pipe out of another block and screwed it into my turbo block.i use a ford oil filter. -
You will not find any american stick shift that doesnt shift like a truck. My z has a l28 turboed and I run 82 280ZX NA trans because i use the car for open track days -no drag racing.Wiith redline mtl oil in it the shift action is nice.If your are expecting an american trans that shifts like a honda s2000 trans there are none.probably the best trans for your application would be a WC T5.I used to be a ford dealer tech -i know t5's well.they can take alot of abuse-but they dont shift like an asian trans.

the small yellow wire fires the transistor by driving it to ground. If you connect a led to v+ and the other side to the yellow wire it should flash while cranking. If you have to you can use an early 4 pin gm hei chip to replace the transistor.or a bosch ignitor .I sold all of my old zxt stuff .

Track brake pad recommendations
randy 77zt replied to Zmanco's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
I have the same front brake setup.i use normal napa autoparts store pads on the front for daily use.On track days i switch to porterfield r4 .The oem style asbestos pads are easier on the brake rotors and dont take any warmup. My rear brakes are 84 300 zx rotors with 2 piston willwood calipers.I run porterfield r4s pads in the rear.I use Ford brake fluid -
There is a 240 siting down the street .I am i modesto so nothing rusts here.i dont know what the guy wants for it but he looked at my z and said his is for sale.send me pm if you want my cell #

Tony-i have suspected fuel vaporization between the tank outlet and the fuel pump to be the problem after reading the faq sticky on walbro pumps.Changing to the bosch 044 pump is my usual get-a-bigger-hammer solution to a problem that goes clear back to the 1960's when cars with engine mounted fuel pumps would vapor lock at high altitudes.if the bosch pump isnt fed nice bubble-free fuel it too will probably fail.I think my unused spare tire well will be home to a surge tank with with a low pressure/high volume pump feeding it.Raising my base fuel pressure to 4 bar will be enough to get the 440cc injectors to hit my 350-400rwhp target for sure.Currently the bosch pump is below the fuel outlet with a 85 micrron earl's pre-filter in front of it
-
I will probably be at the limit of my 440cc injectors when my car gets dyno tuned some day and i am thinking of running up the base pressure of my efi system to 4 or 5 bar with a new regulator.i had problems with walbro fuel pumps and switched to a single bosch 044 .Supply side is all -8.Lots of earl's push-loc fittings used. The pump is mounted where the original 280zx pump was mounted and the hard line was replaced with 3/8 aluminum line.I have had tuning problems with fuel heating after idling and fiddling on the laptop .Maybe my nice home-made fuel rail needs to have some insulation put on it .i suspect it was vaporizing the fuel between the pump and the tank after the fuel got hot-idling on a 95f degree day while on a laptop for 20+ minutes.I might put a surge tank in the spare tire well so I can be sure the 044 is correctly fed. Some clear fuel line in a few places would help check for airation of the fuel.Getting sent home from the dyno with problems to fix is not good.On the RC Engineering website there are math formulas for the injector size/pressure calculations.

20 years as a ford dealer tech-currently semi-retired.Pick the company that comes to the shop every week.In some locations Matco isnt around.Try craigslist-sometimes people are moving and dont want to move tools.Craftsman tools made in the last 10 years or so arent any good.I have had friends try to warrenty craftsman tools with the dealership work shirts on and crappy sears wouldnt honor the warrenty.i can break any brand of tool.

sorry to hear about your car but at least your son is okay .There is a 72 z down the street for sale if you want another 1.

The yellow wire at the ignitor is the trigger wire to fire the ignitor/coil assembly. It needs very little current-its just an old power transistor like you would see on old radios.i dont remember transistor terminolgy from electronics in college but i would guess its the leg that you would call the gate of the transistor.i used about 3.5ms dwell on a falling edge i think.drove about 5000 miles with this set up-no problems. The engine was a 1981 zxt that had the crank angle sensor.if you grind every 2 out of 3 teeth on that crank wheel then take 1 more off at a good spot you can make a 30-1 wheel out of old 1981 zxt parts. The good thing about MS is it doesnt care where or what parts are used to make it work as long as the electronics are correct.I fired my ms with a hall effect sensor and 3 magnets in the flywheel that were 60 degres from tdc and 120 degrees apart .I used the 81 zxt dumb distributor .But i am currently running my car with another brand of efi using the 1981 crank wheel modded to 30-1 and a hall effect gear tooth sensor.Somebody probably could make the 1981 cas work with ms.But most people tend to copy other people's work.
