  1. you need to find somebody that has actually done this so you wont be the test dummy at your own expense.i have a friend with a 66 mustang with a built c4 and he has had 2 problems.he needed a deeper pan with fluid pick up at the bottme -it was sucking air.the fluid needs a large cooler-it runs hot.plus you need big brakes.some of the software you can get for chevy lsx lets you wotk on the auto trans functions.newer trans have functions like adjustable line pressure, torque converter lock up,fluid temp sensors, shaft speed sensors and lots of fun stuff.but some kind of paddle shifting would be fun
  2. i bought the vipec from neel vasavada at apex speed technology in los angeles.i am have him tune it because i want the car to run like a new 2010 car.my z seeemed to turn into a science experiment over the years.i dont expect a big hp number-just want a car that drives the same every day with out working on it.its going to be a 600 mile round trip to get this done.the car has been sitting alot up until 2 weeks ago.been working full time on it -will have to find a new job after this.but i have been determined to go as far as i can with my parts combo so i can see the result.its a male pride kind of thing-i am not giving up until i get some results
  3. finally after many years of goofing around with 2 efi systems and building a stroker l28 i have realized a limitation-i am not very patient at learning software of any type.i am kind of old school-fix it with a hammer kind of guy.after installing vipec efi and getting a good daily driver tune i have decided just to pay and get it done.trying to tune a rapidly accelerating car on the street and going back through data logs -i have had enough.car will be tuned with some kind of knock sensing system in place on a dyno with lots of air for turboed engines.i just want a good 15 psi 91 octane pump gas tune.but with 100 degree outside temps that can be tricky.so i am going to get roll the dice and get it done.
  4. its an extreme full disc.not a puck type.its been in the cars for 3 years or so but car has been parked for r&d on efi system .gave up on the science experiment and bought vipec v44 efi.i am not a drag racer.car is used for daily driver+ road race track time
  5. i have a zxt alt on my 77 and it gets the jobs done but i run a clutch fan on the water pump.i ran a #8 wire from alt output direct to the starter.eliminates volt drop through old nissan wiring.the battery is an odessy dry cell in the back with #0 welding cable.both positive and negative cables run to the starter.there is a #8 wire to the body for a ground at the battery.the engine is also grounded to the body.only thing i run possable problem is 77z a/c system + vipec efi.efi is direct wireed to battery and oem nissan wiring only controls a relay.the 77 wiring on the rh side has been modded alot .the ols 77z wiring has alot of volt drops in it
  6. i have a act 240mm full face clutch and i like it,stiffer than stock but not by much.car can be driven in downtown san francisco no problem.just got vipec efi going and am heading down to los angeles for dyno tuning.should have good knowledge of holding power soon.
  7. the way late model cars are built this could be a very good electrical challenge.i would assume that the assist changes with speed-full assist at parking lot speed and no assist on the freeway for good steering feel.probably takes commands from another ecm on the car somewhere.
  8. motorcycles are like tools-you get the 1 you need for the way you ride.i am looking at selling my 2002 yamaha fz1 and 2002 plated honda xr650r for a used bmw r1200gs.i rented a gs in vegas last winter and went on a 2 day ride out to death valley.did about 150 miles of dirt road .really liked the bike.the honda might be making a baja run to cabo soon though.i have a time share down there.
  9. i paid $1800 for v44 but that is full retail and the company i bought from is supposed to dyno tune it toady i connected the idle valve, boost control.msd8920 tach adaptor, and a/c request.everything is working but the idle could be programmed better.not that hard but have been concentrating on getting the car ready for 600 mile round trip to get dynoed.the vipec website is always quick to respond with questions-last time in 3 hours.a few small problems on install but i will admit it was a user malfunction. i suck with software-i am very old-school type of guy.seems to control the oem 77 z a/c very well
  10. switched from megasquirt to vipec.meagsquirt=long story.anyway vipec-after about an hour driving with the autotune on it made its own daily driver program.software basically is operated like windows.downside-the v44 is only has enough outputs to run a 6cylwasted spark.the v88 can run full sequential put you pay more for it.i run a v44 and i am running very few of the available functions.but the boost control and idle will be working soon.along with a/c request.another plus is it runs on usb port
  11. get the ford evtm(wirng diagram) book that the dealers have and very carefully disassemble the car.the ecm has been hacked and you can get software/cable package to use the obd2 port.as far as megasquirt i have been there/done that.i used to be a ford dealer tech.the evtm book is very good and a well planed attack should give you a very neat install
  12. i hope your son heals up back to normal soon.i have a 2 year old grandson and watch him carefully while he is here.about the duratec-its a good engine.there is exoticbritish sports car called a noble that uses a duratec turboed.basically its the fact that most modern engines are dohc and the heads flow well.i think the 3.0ranger v6 will have a trans that will work-5spd mazda.ford came up with this after giving up on buying expensive yamaha engines for a taurus sho.if you do this swap get a book from ford called evtm-its the factory wire diagram book for the car.that will make it easy to dissect the engine wiring from the car .i use masking tape and a pen to tag the wires.i used to be a ford dealer tech.good luck-i think you will enjoy the car when it is done.
  13. if you get a piece of 5/32 vacuem line and put 1 end in your ear and 1 in the carb throat by the throttle blade you can sync the carbs by the sound of the air rushing past the throttle blades.the louder the air the more the better the mix is.try to get all barrels sounding the same.a good healthy hissing sound is good
  14. on some of the newer cummins diesel engines the turbo has shaft speed sensors.i would assume this is used as an input to the engine ecm.the engine ecm would use this to compute the output for the vgt adjustor servo on the turbo.engine has no waste gate-the vgt just lets some of the exhaust gas by on the turbine side.some of the newer after markit efi systems can use turbine speed and control a vgt
  15. i really doubt if he will bother going through with anything in modesto.it will cost more to file the papers than the case is worth.does the ******* have enough ambition to stand in the line long enough to file at small claims anyway?if he does just take have a buddy take him out the night before court and make sure he doesnt show up=automatic win.even if he did get a judgement it is hard to collect-more time involved than it is worth.i put a wage garnishment on somebody once for not paying back my deposit on a house i rented from them.as soon as i did that they filed bk.i would tell the guy to talk to my aluminum baseball bat
  16. needs some paddle tires and a big sand bowl at glamis dunes orv park
  17. bought a new 2002 fz1 from la yamaha in early 03.saved $1800 over local dealer in central cali.bought the yamaha 3 year extended warrenty-bike has never been back to a dealer.just oil changes and back tires
  18. i have 84 300zx roters on all 4 wheels of my 77.front calipers are toyota truck and rear are willwood 2 piston.track days i use porterfield r4 in front and r4s in rear.for street i use just napa toy truck pads and leave the r4s in back.the napa pads are organic and are easy on the rotors.
  19. i have about 5 more wires to connect and my v44 will be installed.hopefully this weekend
  20. i rented a ford expedition from hertz to get a boat coast to coast.after delivering the boat i flew home.it had a frame hitch on it
  21. i dont watch nascar.since i got a new 52" flatscreen i got hdtv and found wrc on hdnet.the dvr snags it while i am gone.all is good.i watch f1 and any kind of baja racing.the aussie v8 supercars are good.nascer=snooze
  22. if the old version of the engine with efi had original injectors i would bet that the spray pattern was not very good.why?because back in thhe day when z's were built the gas did not have injector cleaner in it.i owned a shop and worked on a lot of 75-78 z's.the exhaust manifolds would crack because the injectors would be running lean on some cylinders because the injectors were partially plugged.the stock cam and some good ignition timing settings will make good manifold vacuem at idle.the more vacuem the better the carbs work.where efi works better is on an engine with a big camshaft.nothing takes the place of proper tuning.
