When i ran a ms on my car i used the stock coil/ignitor.The yellow wire is what fires it and connects to the ms.You have to play with the dwell settings a bit though. If the transistor is hot you are running too much dwell .

81 zxt in a 71 240, no spark
randy 77zt replied to riten_thekisser's topic in Ignition and Electrical
The yellow wire that went to the power transistor is what fires the ignition.put a test light on it and turn the engine over with the starter and see if you get flashing -
Good performance shops in the San Jose, California area
randy 77zt replied to PanzerAce's topic in Non Tech Board
There are resons why auto repair shops wont do performance work. And reasons why performance shops dont stay in business. The main reson why nobody wants to do performance work is that it is impossable to correctly estimate the time involved before starting the work.In the early 90's i used to manage a repair shop in Hayward. The business had some commercial customers that had some hot rods(v8z,boats,motorhomes)that we did project work -usually involving installing a high horsepower properly running engine. The owner would quote a price and we would closely stick to it.I used to do all the project work. The project work ALWAYS took twice as long as first estimated .But since these customers spent usually spent over $100k a year for fixing their commercial vehicles at the shop we could afford to write some time off to keep them happy.Next problem is dealing with California Bureau of Automotive Repair. All work has to have an estimate and the estimate has to be within +- %10.If the estimate is short you have to call the car owner for a revised estimate. Then you have product liability. That 500hp motorhome engine that i built had to be rebuilt again-FOR FREE+a $1500 tow bill.that the shop ate.Seems the torque convertor couldnt take the stress .It balooned out and tore up the thrust bearing on the crank shaft. The fix was a special torque convertor from GM/Allison.So if you had to pay a tech $20 to $30 per hour + pay commercial shop space if the SF Bay area and write %20 to %40 of your time off you will soon be broke. -
Any transmission shops in the Bay Area for Rb25det rebuild?
randy 77zt replied to Zreddy's topic in Nissan RB Forum
i do work on manual transmissions at my house.i would not know if there are a parts interchangeability on your 2 trans until i did a tear down on both trans.what are the problems while driving?that can give you an idea what to look for on tear down.if you just need brass synchro rings i have a box of l28 loose trans parts.sometimes its better just to go to an importer like venus in sacramento and get another trans -
Good pick of bikes.I wish you many miles of fun .Last summer i saw a 500 ninja fully bagged out for touring in yosemite.it had a nice set of soft luggage on it.

75 280Z Turbo problems
randy 77zt replied to NicksT04=S30's topic in Trouble Shooting / General Engine
my ford e150 van with 5.8 has 19lb/hr injectors. the injectors have orange color code on them.i think the original 280zxt injectors were 24lb/hr.if you keep running this thing up till it leans out you risk major motor.damage.the my z has 44lb injectors with a vipec ecm.there is no easy way to change out the efi system-i ripped out all old zxt stuff and started over with new connectors and built my own harness.used to rum megsquirt but it seemed like i was always chasing problems with that.but that is just my opinion on ms-your results may vary.all of the guys on this website that have a running high horspower l28 turbo hava had to learn alot about efi systems to make the hp -
How can the typical airline passenger be SO dumb?
randy 77zt replied to Globerunner513's topic in Non Tech Board
ever since working overseas for awhile i really hate flying anymore.partly because i am kind of claustrophobic.us domestic airlines are kind of like of like flying greyhound busses any more.best airline i would recommed is emirates if you need to goto the middle east.nice new planes with on board video screens.for domestic southwest seems ok.but if you fly odds are you will have a problem sometime.my main gripe right now is too many people with too much carry on stuff-it take too much time to board and unload.worst nightmare-getting stuffed onto a plane in baghdad at 4 in the afternoon after the plane had sat out all day with no a/c .it was 126 out that day.plane was loaded and doors shut.i thought i was going to die on that flight -no a/c till dubai -
Just when you thought you saw brazen Smog Scams...
randy 77zt replied to Tony D's topic in Non Tech Board
2003 or so i used to work as a tech at a local ford dealer and 1 of the young salesman up front had a musttang cobra with mucho aftermarkit stuff on it.his buddy(another tech but no smog license)installed all the parts in the shop after hours when i was smogging used cars.you could smell the thing running rich -with no cats of course.the sales boy sells the car and wants it smogged.i got offered $500 cash.i turned it down and told him i wanted nothing to do with the car.to many people knew too much.used to have a smog license for about 10 years.dont work on cars much anymore.never got any write ups from bar while i had my license.bar used to send me a little newsletter with all the shops that got cited.i have applied to be a bar inspector twice with the state .1st time i took the test and got an interview.problem was by the time i got the interview i was working in iraq.last year i applied then got a letter back about the state hiring freeze.bar inspectors start at $60k a year -
i have seen 500hp 5.0 mustangs with superchargers get 80+ runs out of a stock ford wct5 with no problems.if you get a zxt t5 bellhousing and machine the input bearing carrier on the t5 it bolts together.i run a 3.0l turboed engine in my 77z with a 82zx na trans.the reason is the ratios are best for what i use the car for-road race tracks.drag racing puts huge shock loads on driveline parts.road racing doesnt do this so i prefer the na trans because it shifts like butter when filled with redline mtl.if i was going to build a turboed z for drags i would run an auto trans -just floor it and go.i did some work an an old zxt turbo with an auto trans and it was very fast-and easy to drive.

My turn to seek advice about bikes and relationships
randy 77zt replied to auxilary's topic in Non Tech Board
bikes are kind of like women.the hot looking bikes are high maintenance and are uncomfortable on long rides.the ugly bikes dont take much maintenance and like to go on long rides.younger people get into relationships and hope the other person will change over time.that never works .tried that in my 1st marriage.have had same girlfriend for 18 years.but we keep our finances and hobbies separate.aux-if you need some tech help with the fz just send me a pm.at 22000 miles mine has just needed tires and oil changes.only complaint is short distance from seat to pegs-would be better for a shorter rider.but at this time i cant afford the bike i want and doubt that it would be as reliable as the fz has been. -
Affordable Mobile Windshield Replacement/Installation in San Diego
randy 77zt replied to Project Z's topic in Non Tech Board
new cars use glue to hold the windshilds in.old cars (z's) used a rubber gasket that had grooves molded into it to hold the window into the body.if the gaskit is old/hard you wont get it out-you cut it out with a razor knife and throw it away.cut the chrome trim out first-then cut the window out.then throw the old gaskit away.to reinstall put the gaskit on the glass the put a piece of 1/4" nylon rope in the body groove on the windshile rubber.put soapy water on the rubber and set the glass into the car -trying to get the body seam started in the groove in the rubber.have a helper push in on the glass from the front while you pull the rope out of the rubber -seating the rubber back into the car.flat glass like jeep winshields are easier. -
5 lug stock offset front hub
randy 77zt replied to svMike's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
i think the bearings on 1st gen 300 zx hubs are the same if you are a build-it-yourself type .i prefer to shop at local pick&pull -
smaller tires will run hotter.i run 225-50-15 on 15x7 wheels.but its a daily driver/track car with stock fenders.if the car is well balenced and tire temps are equal across the tread but on the cool side it would tell me that you could run a smaller tire or a softer tire like an old goodyear race slick

best price for new i have found is shox.com -
i would be inclined to get a slightly larger bike .motorcycle saftey classes use the old honda rebel 250.i would be thinking of a suzuki 650 v-twin or a kawi 500 ninja twin-at least if you had to hit a freeway you wont be run over.there are lots of low mile bikes in early 2000's around used with under 10k miles.i have a 2002 yamaha fz1 1000cc street bike that is very fun to ride -but it eats back tires.even if you run the sport touring tires-you get about 10k max on tires.lots of bikes around just lok for awhile
-
if you are using ford 5.0 efi if you can afford it get the ford book called evtm for the car/engine that you have.that will make it very simple to wire up the ford efi.the oem efi harness will have some extra connectors on it you wont need .study the book for 3 hours -the it will only take an hour to dothe harness.on the 260 harness-if you separate the wires and tag them with masking tape you will find which wires you can eliminate.on my 280 i eliminated the fusable links and ran a #8 wire fron the alternator output direct to the battery.there are a lot of voltage drops in z wiring
-
if you get up to norcal with that send me a pm.lots of riding here.i have a 2002 yamaha fz1.after riding newer model street bikes you wish the car makers could install the technology (fully adjustable suspension.high rpm but tractable motors)into a car.

the diesels have a soot catcher-trap in the exhaust system.when it gets full diesel is injected into it and the soot-carbon particles are burned off.this is the regeneration cycle.exhaust temps can be 1000+ degrees.the engine ecm controls all this stuff

car has to have cat and ALL oem emissions for the zxt motor you used installed+evap system from fuel tank correctly plumbed.the kit car 500 car exemption would not apply to this car.car will be registered as a 1978. car will have to goto the referee station to get a swap sticker affixed to drivers door frame list the year of the engine and all equipment that was factory installed (egr,evap,cat,o2 ,ecm)and that is not the last of it.every 2 years you will have to get it tested at a test only station.i used to have a smog license in ca and have ran a few swaps through the referee station.if you dont have a good working knowledge of emissions systems(how EVERYTHING worrked when the donor engine was new) you very little chance of this car passing.its not just about the tail pipe results.even if you get all oem stuff working then you have to worry about tail pipe results.car will be run on a loaded dyno at 15 and 25 mph.if for some reason you egr is working correctly you will get failed for high nox output.the specs are more stringent than when the car was new.i have complete exhaust with cat made for this car laying around plus lots of parts

some race series use the same efi system and the sanctioning body owns the ecm units.the idea is that all ecm's have the same program limits -ex rpm limit.and yes i would like to see some aussie v8 supercars take nascar on at watkins glenn or infineon.my money would be on the aussies
