L28ET CAS disk = Z31 CAS disk ???
TheNeedForZ replied to TheNeedForZ's topic in Ignition and Electrical
Can someone verify this? It has something to do with the angle offset between the flat side of the hole at the center of wheel and the six slots : Imagine a perpendicular bisecting line is drawn on the flat side of the hole which is at the center of the wheel, the bisecting line forms an angle with the closest slot. The question is, do Z31 wheel and 280ZXT wheel form the same angle? I believe the offset angle has something to do with sending the signal in advance so the ECU can time the spark by choosing a certain amount of delay. -
Does any one have the pictures posted by Afshin? especially the one on page two that compares 280ZXT chopper wheel to the Z31 chopper wheel. Since the wreck yard I went to refused to sell me just the Z31 dizzy wheel unless I shell out 50$ for the whole Z31 dizzy, I have to turn my 280ZXT wheel into a Z31 wheel by enlarging the #1 TDC slot. However I have to verify the relationship between the slots and the flat side in the middle. I have to explain what I just said : Imagine a perpendicular bisecting line is drawn on the flat side of the hole which is at the center of the wheel, the bisecting line forms an angle with the closest slot. The question is, do Z31 wheel and 280ZXT wheel form the same angle? I believe the offset angle has something to do with sending the signal in advance so the ECU can time the spark by choosing a certain amount of delay. Thanks in advance

What is valve bounce and valve float? Are they different subjects? Say an engine has light valve springs and is revving too much, do the rocker leave the lobe surface of the cam thus leading to the valve not closing at the proper time? Is this called valve float? Say if a valve closes and bounces off the seat and sorta palpitates near the valve seat, is that called valve bounce? What causes valve float/bounce and what are the general remedies? In a desmodromic valve system where a valve is slammed shut by a rocker arm at high rpm, are the valves prone to bounce since it is slammed shut?

The turbo con rods were said to be shot-peened, otherwise they look just like regular L28/L26 rods. I will be using L24 rods that are polished, balanced and shot-peened(want to build a 3.0L) Back in their racing days, 280ZXT made 600hp on the race track, but they were using selected/prepped block and prepped rods like the L24 rods I will be using when I build my 3.0L L28ET

L28ET CAS disk = Z31 CAS disk ???
TheNeedForZ replied to TheNeedForZ's topic in Ignition and Electrical
In afshin's 300zx ECU/MAF swap guide sticky, he said this in page two : "The chopper wheel on the left is from the 280ZXT, the one on the right is from any Z31, or similar year maxima. The holes should look like this when being dropped into the distributor. If you flip it over, then it will give the wrong reference point and run poorly." The "...on the left...on the right..." was referring to pictures. The pics are long gone now. But I think what he said implies that all Z31(including Z31T?) and some Maxima have the same CAS disk. Correct me if I am wrong. -
I went to j/y today and removed a CAS disk from a N/A Z31. As I presented it to the checkout desk, the guy in charge asked what the disk is. I answered it's a dizzy disk. He then said I can't take apart a distributor like that, and I have to buy the whole dizzy (50$CDN) to get the disk. I had to make a choice since I am about to spend 50$ for a disk that looks very much like the disk in my L28ET dizzy (except the Z31 disk has a large slot among 5 smaller ones while the L28et disk has six slots of the same size). I chose to not buy it and come home to check with the knowledgeable people first. What confuses me is that I read somewhere in the search function that a Z31 CAS sends 12 signals per revolution and the L28ET CAS sends 3. If they both have 6 slots in one circle, how is that possible? From what I see, the only difference between the two is the one wider slot on Z31 CAS. I can't help but to wonder if it is possible to modify the L28ET CAS disk to work like the Z31 CAS disk? If I mask the disk carefully with tape I can probably etch out a large slot with nitric acid which I have. Thanks

Very clean and nice car. You know what you are doing !!!

If the only item you need is a cylinder block then it should be cheap if you can do the work yourself. I have seen a F54 block for sale for 50$ Canadian.
-
If you are talking about swapping a engine from a different manufacturer then it won't be any cheaper. The cheapest route is to find a local L28. A running L28/L26/L24 costs only a few hundred dollars. What exactly is the damage?
-
So what did you find that changed your opinion about them? When I was in highschool, a guy was trying to be familiar with me and a friend of mine just to sell us some knives. We refused, and he was never so much of a friend anymore. Pretty much uncool.

A lot of nice cars, thanks for posting.

The one with the pretend gun fight right? I loved it when I first saw it. Too bad most people are hoplophobic.

good to hear that, hope you stay healthy norm.

HA! what was that guy going to do with a manhole cover in a fight?

As a side note, both "How to modify your datsun/Nissan..." and "How to rebuild you Datsun/Nissan...." books agree with 1 fast z that later 280ZX blocks(turbo blocks) have their siamese webs split in the middle of the cylinder. Therefore, unlike earlier N42 which has unsplit webs, turbo blocks are actually weaker if bored out to the maximum. 1 fast z, Is it true that there are L28 blocks with a different metallurgy? If so what was the original intention of using this metal and what are the benefits?

what a beautiful Z! (not for the weak of heart or stomach)

I'll take it if it can transform into a robot. -
Why do people call .040" overbore .40" overbore? is there some kind of convention to call it like that? The difference is tenfold...

Go read post #16 in the link below and then see how other people react to this guy's theory. http://www.roguesci.org/theforum/showthread.php?t=4337 Yep, he's the smartest guy around!

Mike, I have several pics of different cars sporting the fender mirrors. PM me your email and I'll email them to you.

Hi, A fellow member at HybridZ asked me to send some photos via email. The problem is that my computer is acting funny. To elaborate, I am a yahoo email and IE user. After I have written my email, I hit the "attach files" button, but nothing happens. It should take me to another screen so I can attach files. But nothing happens, it stays at the original screen. Today I found out that the same thing happens if I hit "forward" , "reply", "spell check", or "move". Something should happen after I hit those buttons, but I get nothing. There is always a message that says "error on page" at the bottom left of the screen(status bar?) I've tried to reboot the computer, or turn off the pop-up blocker, but didn't help. Advice?

Just finished watching all of them. You are probably the first person ever to document the restoration process of a Z so thoroughly with videos. I can't thank you enough for making/posting those videos. They are very entertaining and inspiring. I've learned a lot about general body work as well. Good luck with your project and keep them videos coming!!!
