  1. Tim, in addition to fixing what they found... here's a diagram for the MBC. http://reviews.ebay.com/NXS-Manual-Boost-Controller-Installation-Install-Guide_W0QQugidZ10000000004194851 The "B" method is probably what you want.
  2. Good idea to share info for anyone... If "you're" a novice like me, the MIT videos are a great introduction to a machine shop. There are three or four videos in the middle specifically for milling. http://techtv.mit.edu/genres/24-how-to/videos/142-machine-shop-1
  3. Grump, There are machinist forums out there... http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net/ http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/index.php (mod is strict, you must state that you're into manufacturing to be admitted membership) Side note - apparently Grizzly bought the South Bend name and plans to introduce (imported) versions of the popular lathes, with modern updates. http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/showthread.php?t=177783&page=2 ^^^ The owner of Grizzly seems to be an active member over there, which I suppose counts for something.
  4. Whoah! I had a cop, in a marked car, do this to me in the Z late at night. Literally as I reached for the gear shift he passed. I wasn't stopped. It certainly seems like a bait and switch tactic, or entrapment - one of those fancy terms. I'm very disappointed to hear that the judge was not reasonable enough to see your side of the case.
  5. I'm very sorry for your loss but it sounds as though you are coping well. The videotape is a unique opportunity to have and keep in the family. As others have said, it was an excellent post, Bill. I enjoyed the read.
  6. Not worth it. Neither are any antics the media calls "road rage". Sometimes though, its interesting to observe events unfold. I saw a couple of skin head dudes hop out of their truck at a redlight and run up to a car that had cut them off a few miles earlier. I was sitting a few cars back, in my Z - windows open, t-tops off, alone... basically defenseless. If they wanted to cause me harm they easily could have. Sorta put things into perspective. Drivers forget that every other car on the road is driven by another person just like themselves. Some of 'em are crazy enough to jump out and assault you.
  7. You should have gone straight to Sienna and picked up a couple ladies for later...
  8. http://www.msextra.com/manuals/MS_Extra_Manual_Index.htm They have a link that includes the firmware and Megatune for MS Extra.
  9. I'd use MOSFETs. You lose some efficiency going through BJT's. I would say you're safe assuming the motor controller will put out a FET friendly period. The internet is littered with circuits as this is a common thing for robotics, otherwise you can buy a bridge from someone like "sparkfun.com". Good luck!
  10. I did a three piece approach - two sides and a bottom. The sides were long and thin, and I punched holes to weld through to the existing rails that I didn't have to cut. The bottom I put two edges on like a shoe box lid so I had to hammer it on tight. More @ http://z.modeltrainguide.com/gallery/view_album.php?set_albumName=album05&page=1
  11. Hey, J. I'm planning to keep it to 7psi of boost for now. I don't know what that will do to the HP, and I have no idea how much more it can handle. For now I'm going to rely on the seat dyno!
  12. I'm probably not going to make it this week, unless y'all are planning a trip north. And Justin, sorry, I suck at PM's. I got yours but haven't replied yet.
  13. I wanted a project car when I graduated from college. I had about 6 weeks between commencement and starting my real job... seemed like enough time to restore a clunker! I test drove a Porsche 914, and a day later I went motorcycle shopping with a buddy. The guy said "I'm moving, man. Just sold the bike. But I got a couple old Datsuns. Wanna look?" I drove the pair of 280zx's home a few days later. I didn't know anything about what I was getting into. Both were rustbuckets, one was crashed, etc. Six weeks turned into years, always doing the work myself learning as I went. Started when I was 22, now I'm 27, and in a year I'll be driving the Z on my wedding day.
  14. Yea, I guess it did turn into a build thread (oops?!) but I think its important that we continue to learn from each other. Megasquirt is a new computer for the car. It replaces the existing computer, and the existing engine wiring harness. You can buy a Megasquirt in various versions - MS1, MSII, and in various forms - kit, or assembled. diyautotune.com is the place to shop, and their staff is active on these forums. I chose to build my own wiring harness from spools of wire, but you can buy a harness too. You can re-use some of the datsun sensors, but you'll need other sensors as well. I got mine from the junk yard. So basically you get your megasquirt installed in the car, wire it to the engine and other things. Then you run software on your computer called Megatune - it will let you control the fuel, timing (timing is actually optional), and a bunch of other stuff. For the distributor - I welded the advance as several folks on this forum have done. The distributor on my 82 is a VR distributor - it generates an A/C sine wave as the engine spins 'round. The megasquirt is setup to take the analog sine wave input and use that to sense the RPM of the motor. The reason you lock the distributor is so that the signal does not change as the revs increase. You then use the megasquirt computer to fire the coil... the computer figures out when to send the spark, offset from the distributor signal.
  15. Stock relay board? We don't really have one. You need a main relay and a fuel pump relay. You can harvest those from the junk yard too, from pretty much any car. Grab a handful so you've got spares. I used spade connectors crimped on to the wire, and for the fuel pump I ran new wires under the carpet. I used spade connectors to slip over the prongs for the pump itself. I didn't have to make any cuts.
  16. I spent probably two days, one to build the harness and relay setup, and another to put it in the car. I tried to be very neat. Build as much as you can ahead of time to minimize how long the car is down.
  17. Hi Jeff, thanks for the bump back up! No real updates... here in NY, its still winter. The car is in hibernation. I am planning to purchase a wideband oxygen sensor, probably an Innovate unit from diyautotune.com. Where else besides the A-pillar can I mount a boost gauge and AFR display?
  18. You can get the sensors, including TPS, from a junk yard. I used the stock CHTS as the coolant sensor. I chose a GM air sensor. My TPS came from a Quest mini van, and I only had to build a bracket for it. If you can solder, you can build the kit. Just take your time. I did mine in about 12-14 hours IIRC. The stim will help you test as you go. As far as getting a tune in 24 hours - some probably can, but I didn't. Maybe I'm a pessimist, but perhaps wait till a Friday to start so you'll have a weekend to fix any "gotcha"s.
  19. Ditto, and I'm using MS1 v3.0
  20. Haha, rocky... nice. You've gotten a lot done and it looks fantastic. Is that heat-mat you stuck to the firewall by the downpipe? Maybe I should get some of that...
  21. Good luck, Doc. Some people grow up faster than others, and some don't have a choice in the matter. I hope it all works out for you both.
  22. Glad to find out he was alright. The safety guys seemed almost annoyed to have to go rescue him... am I misinterpreting things?
  23. That looks fantastic! Be sure to tell us how the tech line coating holds up!
  24. Thanks for the compliment, but up close it came out "OK". I wire brushed the parts before and after. The mix was just water and baking soda. I used a chunk of angle iron as the sacrificial electrode. It takes a really long time, even though I used a big power supply. Some folks have better luck with washing soda. And apparently stainless steel works better as the electrode, but then the gases it gives off and the resulting mix are somewhat toxic. Caveat emptor
