When you remove everything, do you have to deal with the cowl air intake? Does it leave a hole to seal up?

You are correct. He looks like he's put a few together... I did that on my last L6 I've built in the past. I had a head gasket leak water out at the rear right side, so I pulled the head and used a hi heat RTV on the HKS metal gasket.
It worked on the Nissan factory in/exh gasket too.
Here it is. I drove the car before parking/parting it, and it ran great except for steam coming out the exhaust pipe. It's also unsafe rusty...

I located the letter on the top side (as it sits on the car) of the bearing housing, right about where the spacer fits inside. They were hard to see until I put a wire wheel to use, cleaning paint/road grime off...
