Yeh, thats what the Nissan booklet on the 280ZX says, there is an illustration of it, manual transmission of course.

Short M6 and M8, say 20-25mm long from memory, someone else may be able to be more specific. See if you can get the proper automotive M8's, take a 12mm spanner, not a 13.

Shock Adjustment for Understeer - Time Attrack
260DET replied to 260DET's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Back at Lakeside Sunday week W, the 30th, incar video is working again. Last time it was switching itself off and of course there was some extra good stuff that was missed. Including passing someone through the kink at over 200 clicks, which was a bit silly really, rush of blood -
Jon already has a HD (High Definition) camera, why go for anything with less picture quality? Really for an incar camera solid state, no moving parts, is the only way to go although a tape camera may be better than a hard drive type which are rubbish for incar, trust me. With either all that can be done is soft mount it as much as possible.

Shock Adjustment for Understeer - Time Attrack

Aaaah the Nurburgring, wouldn't we all like to drive our cars there Given the S130 a run there Frank? Incar vid? Planning on going to Bathurst/Mt Panorama next year, with a 3.9 diff and 7000+RPM 300KPH is possible, in theory -
Lucas/TRD pads are not a bad dual purpose pad, certainly good value for money. I use QFM A1RM pads on the HybridZ for road and circuit work, they are great but not available in the US I would think.

If the surfaces are properly prepared then there will be no problems, its good marine quality gear that is waterproof. There are also epoxy based marine fillers available, lighter and far better than the polyester based junk like bondo which is really a cheap filler that hides faults and encourages rust.

Shock Adjustment for Understeer - Time Attrack
260DET replied to 260DET's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Thanks all, after a bit more thought it may well be that the problem is a combination of driver and a very sensitive low speed bump adjustment. After starting the topic I was reading some Penske shock tuning material, the comment there on how a car feels with loose low speed bump was exactly what I experienced last Sunday, that incar I posted above is not current. The car was moving around a lot through the high speed bendy bits, it had grip but felt very loose. What was good was that the car could be driven hard out of corners, a particularly good thing when you have power So the low speed bump will be adjusted up by one click each end and I will try to do more suitable lines. And drive harder On the circuit, Lakeside has a lot of history, a world championship F1 equivalent GP race was held there back in the day believe it or not Now its used for grass roots events up to State level, one of the fastest average speed circuits in the country, about the same as Phillip Island where the motorcycle GP's are held. -
Shock Adjustment for Understeer - Time Attrack

One of the blokes who is pretty quick around the circuit has said if it handles at that particular corner it won't handle anywhere else Yeh Frank I think I know what you mean by 'planting' and thats probably the answer. Anyway pics may help, its a 180 degree right turn, in the pic below the car has reached about 100 degrees @ 90 KPH. In the linked video the corner entry commences at 0:51 The suspension is set up a little different in the video so ignore that. -
Shock Adjustment for Understeer - Time Attrack
260DET replied to 260DET's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Been thinking about that John, the problematical corner is a slow 180 degrees at the top of a rise, my tendancy has been to rush up the rise, brake hard and then turn. Going to try to brake further and turn in with some forward momentum while still trail braking. That sound right? -
Situation is the hybrid Z tends towards understeer, particularly when there is insufficient weight transfer to the front, mostly but not always when turning in. The low speed bump has been adjusted a few times, its very sensitive, too much and the tyres just lose grip completely and slide front and/or back. Take it off a few clicks and the car moves around a lot through high speed sweepers and tends to understeer badly in certain low/mid speed corners although rear end grip is then great. This is OK in some corners where the car can be driven in to the apex and the good rear grip can be used to power out of the corner. But in other corners this can't be done due to their configuration, in those corners the only way is to basically steer the car around the corner. Go too fast and the car pushes out and can only be retrieved by backing right off and even then it comes back reluctantly. The recommended settings for normal bump and rebound have not been altered at all, basically because I'm not sure which way to go with them and the car feels good otherwise. So, any suggestions?

Adjusting Caster via Radius Rods
260DET replied to Whittie's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Yeh there is not much room to push the front wheels forward to get more caster, adjustable strut tops will help and are not as alignment disruptive. My S30 had spherical bearings fitted to the inner LCA, its not hard to do and works well. Really what the S30 front end needs is some Ackermann and say 8 degrees caster, which you won't get with the standard parts. See you at the Bathurst FOSC in 2011 W -
I have McBeath's book and it certainly is an interesting read. Its a bit patchy as far as being applicable to our Z cars though, the rear aero on items like wings and spoilers is good, the front aero on items like splitters and undertrays not so good. Most of it is specifically formula car related, it would have helped me more if it was more general and DIY orientated.

Targa Vids - a quick drive through the countryside
260DET replied to 260DET's topic in Non Tech Board
Yeh its a great event, this is probably the best video around for Nissan fans, car is a R34 and its the same stage as the Lambo covers. Look out for the Porsche pass WARNING: some NWS language near the end. -
First one is a general overview, note that the white Lambo you see features in the second incar video, showing one stage of a four day event. No handicap nonsense like some other Targas, fastest in class wins The 240Z in the first vid was coming second behind the yellow Porsche in the Classic class but he crashed on day 3

Brake rotor brands and quality
260DET replied to Scott_M67's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
99% of the new brand stuff is going to be China. Bit of a lottery there, take the punt or go Brembo, DBA, etc. -
Thanks for the comment WD, basically US suppliers are great to deal with but most don't understand/care about the cost of shipping. Throw it in a big box and get it out of here sort of thing when often parts could be packed in a smaller box to save on shipping costs.

Want to resize the pics, big, eyes hurt That looks like a great fit, engine sits so low, what sump/pan are you using? For some reason or other I reckon thats the perfect engine for a S130, well done.
-
Interesting as usual Tony, yeh as I said to Jon its the later Nissan cams eg VG30 that Isky don't list, not the old L ones. So whats happening with the higher lift L cams you mentioned? Who is developing them? I always thought the higher the maximum lift the better simply because it results in more effective lift over the duration. Which is my ***** with my VG30DET engine, twin cams four valves nice flowing induction system, all with a miserable 8.5mm lift. Prefer a higher lift rocker design myself, lift rules.
-
Very nice sump err pan there Mr5 and thanks for the new pics. Like the idea of clearly separating each intake for EFI purposes too, a custom upper plenum like the one I got made for my VG30DET could be done as well.

Of course but there is nothing wrong with a niche market, great way to start up a small capital business really. Markets are global these days, there is no reason why a US based old Jap engine hot bits supplier could not do very well it seems to me. Look at what Dave from Arizona Z is doing niche wise for example. Err, does the US accept business migrants?
