Aparently affirmative action only seems to bother some of us when it is not aimed at the upper class. For instance, I think that the extra credit for children of alumni is affirmitive action? Or if that isn't how about a well connected texan's son being moved tothe top of the list over several hundred other applicants (many of whom had previousl training, and better qualifications) for a spot in texas air national guard. Is this unfair? Those who hate affirmitive action do have minority heros. I mean just look at the highest court in the land. Do we not have an esteamed justice who is black? Of course I mean Clarence Thomas... Oops, I just remembered, he got thhough college using affirmive action.

Being as the search function is down, I think that we should cut the newbies some slack on their "dumb" questions. I've been doing this since I was a teenager. even though it was long ago, I can can still remember that once I was a newbie, and if there had been a place that I could have gone to ask those questions, you can bet your a$$ I would have. Apparantly I am approaching this from a different place than most everyone else. I was looking for a project, and I enjoy the challange of putting together a car. It is a fact that budget is just a four letter word (adjusted for inflation) when you start a hybrid. I think that has been made abundantly clear to everyone that has asked. I bought my ZX off a used car lot to replace a totaled Celica. I drove it for two years, rebuilt the engine, then drove it for another year. When the car was old enough to get around the smog laws, I found a dead 350 and a 350th for $125. I've put about $3500 into the engine,(Machine work, Head work, intake, Mag and headers etc.) I rebuilt the tranny myself bought the rebuild kit and a new converter for less than $100. (that is the part about having good connections) The only things I intend to farm out are the exhaust and the paint. I fabbed everything else with my own chubby little hands. Just my 2 cents. Joe

you should have no problems. after all carbed engines have been the norm since the earliest cars. My past experience seems to show that engine life is directrly proportional to the weight of the right foot.

where did you find a Z31???

Finally got around to putting some pics of the Z31/th350 cross member in my personal gallery

Exhaust clearance again (yet)
Chaparral2f replied to Chaparral2f's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
I'mn stillup[ in the air aboout what to do. I'll probably trailer the car to the exhaust guy some time in the next week or so and see if he has any suggestions. Probably what I should have done in the first place. -
I'd bid on them in a second, except that they aren't he ones with the automatic sequential skim adjusters. Its just too much work tryinng to clearance the manual ones.

I am having exhaust clearance problems on my chevy/z31. The left hand header dumps about three inches from the top of the snout on the steering rack. Money is too tight to buy another new set of headers, I have been thinking about is changing the steering rack. The stock one is 19' from boot to boot, and I have been looking for one that is 23" The closest I have come is one from an RX7 it is 21" boot to boot, but it is manual. ther is good news and bad news as they say, The good news is that I woulld loose the weight of the power steering, and the bad news is that I wouldn't have power steering . Any opinions? Another thought is to lower the stock rack and cut and weld an offset into the tie rods. I have even considered moving the stock rack to the left and installing a long tie rod on the right side and a shorter one on the left. joe

Aaaaalmost done with my Z31
Chaparral2f replied to tjcannon's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
TigerZ31, I live in Eagle Point, about ten miles from Medford. If you know of any Z parts sources, I certainly would be interested. I used to deal with All Z in Gresham, but they seem to have gone out of business. Its really a shame because the guy was really helpful. I have the engine and transmission mounted in the car. There is tons of space around the engine, so the installation is really pretty easy. My camera has gone on a vacation to the olympus service center for a while, so I can't document the swap. I am going to have to use a cowl hood since I have a really tall ignition (vertex mag) and air cleaner. Also, I'm going to need the extra space to clear injector stacks if I ever get around to putting the injection on. I'm using the th350 and cut the center section out of the cross member then welded a plate in to move the mount holes about 3" forward, bolted the member to the rearmost holes in the car, and used the stock tranny mount. I got a radiator from a local shop,(the brand name is Northern Radiator) I moved the battery to the spare tire well and plan to relocate the gas filler to behind the licence plate to make room for a RH exhaust pipe. The biggest problem seems to be exhaust clearance. I have a set of block hugger headers that dump about 3" above the snout on the steering rack. Because I enjoy the challange, I think I'm going to go with a longer steering rack ( stock 19" need 23") If I were doing this again, I would either use the stock exh manifold that dumps at the rear, or maybe shortie truck headers.(The manifold should work, but the headers are just a guess from looking at the pics in the summit catalogue) As it is,Keep us informed about your project. joe -
That's it, now is the time to retaliate! I think I'll start making counterfit chopsticks and smuggling them into China.

Did you ener notice that hi rise buildings don't have a 13th floor? This makes just about as much sence. But I do agree that the building affect your mood. Just spend some time in a room that has bars on the windows, and the lock is on the outside of the door.

I have a friend who had a 930 ruf turbo. Only time I ever saw 300 k on an interstate. At that speed when he let up on the throttle we were still accelerating. He had it shipped to LA in a container, and never did get it smogged. The last I heard, the car was just sitting in his collection. He also has a 962, and a Chevron. It must be nice to be wealthy.

First, I have protested Manditory helmet laws for at least 30 years. Key word Manditory. I am a truck driver, and get to see more traffic in a year than most people see in ten. I have no use for these "cool" jerks. All they do is make it possible for the hacks in government to make more laws to protect us from ourselves. As for the nifty stunt beside the truck on the freeway. If that dip s//t had lost it, the statistics would have shown that a big truck was involved in an accident with a motorcycle. I know you're right Aux, Darwin will win out in the end. If the guy on the rice rocket would have center punched brick wall, I could have cared less. (Actually it would have been mildly amusing) A few years ago I saw a man, his girlfriend, and their bike coimpacted into the space between the top of a set of trailer tires and the deck of a trailer. that's why I don't have much use for those who drive with their headsup their a$$. -
Here are the offical top ten Explanations: 1. Martians found the probes and stripped them for parts. 2. Drove under a tree for a quick picnic, and the solar panels couldn't get enough light to operate. 3. Didn't use Duracell Batteries. 4 Landed near an Iraqi WMD sight, and will never be found. 5. They are with Dick Cheney in a secure undisclosed sight. 6. Visas weren't in order, and the Martians have locked them up pending an imigration hearing. 7. Budget cuts necesitated using Windows 3.1 8. Should have never hired Homer Simpson as project manager. 9. Guidence system programed off shore to save money for "tax cut" 10. Kidnapped by Venusians, forced to become sex slaves to the robot on Future World.

Wait a minute, aren't you the same bunch of people who were sermonizing about how you wouldn't ride without a helmet? Yet you think that some idiots in sneakers pulling that crap in traffic is cool?? Where is all that talk about insuranced rates? Stupidity is more dangerous than lack of helmets!! If I send you a dime, will you use it to start a fund to save up and get a clue? -
Do you have too much time on your hands?? All seriousness aside, those are beautiful. You are truly an artist.

Thanks for the information. I've been looking for an R200 LSD and in the last several months have only found four Zs in junk yards around here. and only two of them wereZ31s. As far as the turbos with the LSDs, at least in this area, I think the operative term is "Fat Chance". I've been considering a ford 8.8 from a Super Coupe, but the Supra is worth thinking about. Hmmmm...
-
While swimming around the local pic and pull jy, I came across an '88 Supra. The engine and trans are gone, but I know that it was automatic (shifter still in consol). It was sitting with the rear end on the ground, in the mud. so I couldn't look under it or turn the wheels. Is there any way to tell if it might have an LSD? And would it be strong enough to handle a 350? Also there was a '83 Porsche 944. Same story as the Supra...Same questions too.

Bummer! Hope you get it back soon, and in one piece. Maybe you'll be lucky and find the s-heads before the cops.

We are in complete agreement on that. I would love to stay and discuss this further but I gotta go now, the FBI is here to clean up the static on the wire tap.

I stillthink that its too bad that some can't wee further than the second amendment. Since 911, the government has steadily eroded the bill of rights. and I have yet to hear the NRA moaning about that. I feel that someone should maybe be bitch about the infringement of fundamentalist religion on government, and the attack on the right to privacy. The rest of that document( the constitution) is every bit as important as whether some hack actor with alzhiemers can have an anti tank weapon. ( You do realize that Heston wasn't really moses don't you? ) Oh yeah, I have been a gun owner since I was ten. Don't even get me started on abortion.

Where is the NOS decal? I'm sure that would make that t;urtle much faster.
