  1. Sounds spot on although those spring rates are at the bottom end of the range for the 8610s. Keep that in mind when adjusting rebound. If you find yourself with rebound close to full stiff then something's wrong.
  2. Please get the rule book for the sanctioning body you intend to compete with. There have been some changes in the road race world regarding tubing OD and wall thickness. In general for a road racing style roll cage you don't need a bend past 90 degrees for a S30. For some imports and newer model cars a a 105 degree bend is needed on the door hoops but you'll be OK with a 90 on the 240Z.
  3. Then there are the EMI Camber plates: http://www.betamotorsports.com/products/products.php?cat=10 then hit the Camber Plates link.
  4. The stock Nissan L6 oil pan will cause a loss of oil pressure in long right hand corners at over .8g. Turn 2 at Willow Springs is a great example of this. Overfilling by 1/2 quart will give a couple more seconds before you see the oil pressure drop on a good aftermarket gauge. The stock gauge is so unresponsive that you normally won't see the pressure drop.
  5. A friend has a Long-EZ out at Fullerton airport and I've seen the local police check the fueling ramp for cars filling up. I've never seen them arrest anyone but I have seen them write tickets - for what I don't know.
  6. You MUST weld this connection! If your parts are not welded together DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR until you take the parts off and get them properly welded.
  7. No. Welding blankets are designed for intermittent point heat contact (sparks).
  8. Please remember the context of this discussion, per the OP, is racing - not track days. There is a huge difference in time and dollars betweent he two.
  9. Sometimes people confuse power oversteer (breaking the rear wheels loose with the throttle) with handling balance oversteer. My post above was in the context of handling balance oversteer.
  10. I do recall seeing a 1977 Dodge Diplomat with the lug nuts welded onto the wheel studs at the Pomona Swap meet in 2008. The owner wasn't around and the car was for sale for $100. There was a small crowd around the car discussing the merits of welded on lug nuts while waiting for the owner to return. I left and went looking for old Datsun parts.
  11. Yes, the side axles I'm making will fit the 27 spline R180 diff that comes out of the the Subaru WRX STi.
  12. That picture was from the guy doing the testing of the prototype side axles. He swapped the front pinion flange and the side axles I'm making have the 240Z halfshaft flange dimensions. The rear cover is stock STi as far as I know.
  13. But that change on my old race car would have put it in a class against Radicals, Toyota WSRs, and other purpose build race cars. I would have had to at least double the horsepower to 650+ to even stay within sight of the lap times a Radical or WSR could run. And that power level in a 240Z chassis requires even more chassis, suspension, and aero upgrades. Unfortunately rules often get in the way of low cost alternatives.
  14. The car cost was comparable to most SCCA GT2 level race cars which is what the lap times compared to. A Z prepared to SCCA's IT category would cost about 1/2 as much per hour to run, assuming a competitive car. When I raced a Spec Racer Ford under an "arrive and drive" program the cost worked out to $800 per hour and all I had to do was pop my butt in the seat and drive. I didn't have to fuel the car, change tires, or do any towing.
  15. I did the math when I was racing (in a time trial series) the cost of running my Rusty Old Datsun. Figuring the cost of engine and transmission refreshes, tires, consumables, etc. but excluding entry fees and travel costs, it worked out to $1,090.00 for ever hour the car was running. I parted the car out shortly after that.
  16. Sorry, I missed this. Champion Motorsports and Sportsfeed/EMI Racing. Champion ran a Viper GTS-R in ALMS and Sportsfeed ran a Viper GTS in Grand Am. 2000 and 2001 seasons.
  17. Datrod is my machinist (John Williams of Williams Machine). Since he offered to post pics he should be able to give a progress update.
  18. They are wrong. It does not move the handling balance into steady state oversteer, it just reduces the built in understeer.
  19. Look at the rule sets for US based vintage racing organizations. You have similar racing organization all over Europe and their rule sets would lits what was run on the cars back in the day. Here's one from the US: http://www.vararacing.com/ The rule book is here and you'll be looking for the CP rules for info about what was allowed on race cars run through 1972: http://www.vararacing.com/content/5123.pdf Again, there are a bunch of similar organizations in Europe (and even Poland I bet) that have rule sets based on what was raced back in the 1970s.

From the album: Hall of Shame

  21. 1. Download the factory service manual for your car. 2. Adjust the valves. 3. Check for vacuum leaks. 4. Change trans and diff fluid. 5. Check all the suspension nuts and bolts and make sure they are tight. 6. Check the brakes. 7. Manually adjust the rear drums. 8. Lube the chassis.
  22. The Nissan L6 engines uses 5 1/4 quarts of oil with the stock pan and new oil filter.

    Avatar 3D?

Despite the plot, I was glad I saw it in 3D. The visuals are fantastic and worth it. If you can think of it as a really good Saturday morning kids cartoon on the Disney channel then the plot (or lack thereof) won't bother you.
  24. Yeah, the product name is gonna suck: "S30R180WRXSTI Side Axles". Say that ten times real fast.
