  1. I like how there are about zero autox's during the winter here.
  2. I have a GPS Speedo and Tach. Love them both. I opted for the built in fuel gauge on the speedo. It bounces around a lot, but that can be fixed. I also got the rev-limit LEDs on the tach, but haven't had time to check it out since my car runs like crap. Only problem I've had is the GPS speedo would not sync this one time, and I had to cycle the ignition (to turn the speedo on and off) to fix it. So I lost 20 miles or so of mileage. Didn't get to drive it a whole lot to see if that cropped up again. Still worth it.
  3. I use an angle die grinder and those plastic wire wheels from harbor freight. They have the cup type and the normal wire wheel ones. The cup ones are gentler and seem to work better IMO.
  4. Just got the mag in the mail yesterday. Good read! I could have told him the fuel filter would clog, from personal experience.
  5. I have to agree, especially having moved to the NE. Too dangerous to DD an older Z. For two reasons, one: it's hard to repair if you get in a wreck, and two: Clueless people in their cozy and safe newer cars seem (to me, at least) more careless. They wreck their car? Oh well with all these airbags I'm fine I'll just use the insurance to buy another one and be more careful next time.... You on the other hand? No real safety equipment. It's you vs thousands of people who think airbags and TCS are going to save them.
  6. I wouldn't go with any of Chryslers anemic V6s. I'm tempted to do a ecoboost or coyote swap... except for the price. VQs are much cheaper.
  7. I would try with the LC-1 disconnected first.... I have the same issue, not related to my LC-1, I think. It's more of a trigger noise issue AFAIK. But I haven't seen my car in months, so maybe I'm remembering wrong.
  8. It gets more expensive. I've dumped 2-3 thousand on my swap. Keep in mind, I picked up the motor and an R200 for $500, the driveshaft was free, MS2 was free, the rest is the manifolds (about 700 all welded up), and the little things.
  9. I wouldn't do the VG swap over again. A lot of effort for something marginally better. I'm swapping in a VG33 in whenever I decided to actually reacquire my car. After that.... VQ or 2JZ. new Ford 5.0L.... well, actually, turbo LSx is what I'm thinking. As much as I'd hate to give GM any support. NA LS Zs are everywhere. I can add the turbo(s) for a little more flair.
  10. Ha! Thanks. I know of all the bad spots on mine though and made sure to not get too close in the photos. As for the gauge, I like it a lot, it's very accurate to, say, +/- .2mph. More than I was expecting, anyway. However, on a couple occasions it has failed to get a GPS lock and required the power to be cycled to get it. May be my wiring. Haven't looked at it a lot. Only got 50 miles on the new odometer before I had to store the car. I like the tach and it's shift lights. Problem is, I also have an ignition problem that prevents me from activating them. Well, I could go on about all the issues I've got--but the car's 1500 miles away at the moment. Soon, very soon, I'll be able to ship it over and enjoy it. Just in time to store it here for the NJ winter...
  11. Looks good. You're opting for an offset turbo mount.... that's what I should have done. I need to do my suspension...
  12. The problem isn't necessarily the loan he got for it, it's that he got a loan and then an insurance policy for double that amount, then needs to collect on it all of the sudden due to swerving to avoid a bird that doesn't exist. And he drove it too much which will void the policy anyway, so the insurance will win one way or another. But now that it's pretty clear he didn't swerve, or brake, or do anything to avoid this crash, he's buried himself. Top Gear Top Tip: When committing a crime, make sure there are no witnesses. Or worse, witnesses with video cameras.
  13. What I gathered was chambered muffler then a packed muffler, as long as you can fit, and a small non-resonating tip. Which is what I had on my older Z, but the other way around. One resonator in the cat's place, and then a Y right before two dynomax chambered mufflers. Sounded good--and more importantly, it was quiet. On my current one, I've got 3 packed mufflers at the moment, 2 Vibrant 12" and one Magnaflow 12". The magnaflow's kind of crappy. It's a bit too loud for me. I added a tip and it made quiet a difference to bring the end of the exhaust out from under the rear bumper to beyond it. Still a little on the loud side.
  14. What I would like to know is... will more mufflers muffle more, or is there a diminishing returns type deal going on? What I'd like to do is stick as many glasspacks as I can anywhere they will fit--but only if it would actually make things quieter. Or, what's a good chambered design that muffles well... while not restricting flow?
  15. I wish they'd make a new inline 6... but it won't happen. All the safety equipment will prevent any real weight savings, but the BRZ/FRS seemed to go off well, so what do I know. I agree with Leno, the rear fenders/hips of the car are the best.
  16. That looks very sturdy and legit. Great build!
  17. I did some exhaust for some SCCA guy once, he had a Burn's muffler. He told me to just weld it on instead of taking a break and going to get some slip-on stuff. I feel so bad for ruining it...
  18. No, you don't. You want a vacuum on the exhaust valves, if anything.
  19. It's only worth it, in my opinion, if you put the VG30ET in. And to do that, you need to figure out where to put the turbo (this guy and me), or move the steering shaft (like ZR8ED). I just finished my swap and am still working on small stuff. I haven't really been able to drive it and have fun (mostly just tuning and worrying about breaking things). I think I blew mine up as well, but it's in storage for an indefinite amount of time, so I'm it's in limbo right now.
  20. That's good to know, but with all my spare engines we'll need the enclosed space.
  21. Definitely want to come check this out now that I'm here. You go to the NJZCC meetings?
  22. Can't say I can call NJ "home" yet. Part of that is our shitty temp. apartment. And that everytime I start getting comfortable, I have to fill up the car. Or, rather, SOME MINIMUM WAGE ****** IS REQUIRED BY LAW TO DO IT FOR ME.
