  1. Update: Powder coating continues... Last thing to do is to weld up the flanges, coat them, and I'll be good to go and clamp everything together. Oil cooler is expected in the next week or so... little by little, it's coming together.
  2. I'd recommend e34 M5 One of the last hand built BMWs One of the better cars I've driven. That's going to probably be my next car purchase/obsession.
  3. Any way to check battery voltage (not using the gauge)? Do a parasitic draw test? A multimeter would be your best friend right now. Are your gauges working? Lights dim? Could definitely be a charging/low voltage problem. If the car does start. Before it dies, quickly check voltage with the car running, see if you're getting the 14+ volts you require to charge your battery.
  4. Well if you have spark, and fuel. (and have confirmed this 100%) You need air. I'm assuming, but it sounds like you are using the stock 280z intake system. So I'd be looking at your air flow meter. inspect that, and check for vacuum leaks, tears in the boots, unplugged wires...etc. I'd start there... Best of luck! I hope you figure it out.
  5. Okay, so today I..... -Tapped thermostat housing to accept all my various sensors. Top left is Autometer coolant temp gauge sensor. Bottom Left (now tapped 3/8NPT) is for GM Coolant temp sensor. Top right is plugged, obviously. Bottom right is also tapped 3/8NPT for the sender on my cooling fan. (set to kick on at 180 degrees and kick off at 170) Now I need the gaskets, and a fresh 160 degree thermostat, then I can bolt that in place for good. Another thing down. Ordering an oil cooler tomorrow or the next day.
  6. Aside from having to order more powder, which I am blaming partially on my inexperience. That, and having ordered a small amount just in case I royally screwed things up, or if this turned out to be a failure. Got 2 of the pieces done. I really like how it looks. The color is "wrinkle" black. I'm certainly enjoying myself. Comparison It's the little things that count.

Okay so I picked up a large toaster oven, and since my 'wrinkle' powder isn't expected at the post office until tomorrow, I took today to experiment with the machine, and began figure out the powder coating process. First impression: LOOOOOOVE IT! So much fun, INSTANTLY rewarding and very gratifying. Also, not too hard.....can be sort of messy though... Here are some of my first experiments. First was a skeleton key a friend wanted me to try to coat red. Then I coated my fuel return line brackets 'machine grey'. A small detail, that perhaps will go unnoticed, but I like it. And at least now, they are protected, before they were just bare metal. Before After: some blemishes, but I put VERY little prep into these. Tomorrow I do my intercooler pipes. Er....at least start them. Wish me luck!
  9. I think the guy is unsure of a lot of things... As this is not a 240z...Most likely a 260. I think 7000 is a bit steep for a pretty paint job and a leaky smokey motor. But that's just me.
  10. Electric cooling fan arrived today. Derale 14" Tornado electric cooling fan (with thermostat package) 1350 CFM 10.5 amp draw I had to trim the bottom of the fan shroud ever so slightly to get it to fit on my radiator. It's a nice snug fit now. I had originally opted to make some sort of bracket for it, but after seeing the clearances with the 3 row and the water pump, I think that's going to be something for another day. Until I figure that out, I'll just run it with the cheap plastic mounting tabs, which I'll note, that I am quite surprised with their strength thus far. We'll see......
  11. Nothing major, as I am once again waiting for parts. Here are some small things that I've wrapped up in the interim. Coolant line leading to throttle body- Made and installed Remade both of my hard lines for the injectors because before the fuel filter was touching the coolant feed to the heater core. Hahaha!!! So needless to say, after some attention, the fitment is much better now. Also had to slightly modify the front line to not touch the top radiator hose, although it doesn't matter as much as the other line, because it's just going to return to the fuel tank and be cooled anyway. But it looked bad before in my opinion. More small details... Intercooler brackets, roughed out. Not bolted on, just in place. Throttle linkage- and pedal adjusted. So the throttle body now opens 100% at WOT. Another couple shots of the current state of the motor and assembly. Things to do this week. (parts permitting) -Tap my thermostat housing for 3/8 NPT (when the tap arrives this week) -Mock install of electric radiator fan and thermostat placement (when it arrives this week) -Powdercoat majority of intercooler pipes (when powder arrives this week, and when I get a toaster oven) More surely to come.....
  12. Okay so as I once again wait on some parts in the mail (electric cooling fan, and some other misc goodies) I got a new toy to play with! (Be proud Ryan) My first project is powdercoating my intercooler pipes. And I finished my exhaust (minus paint). Tucked up there nicely. Real understated, I like it.
  13. Purple power is some pretty serious stuff! Just really make sure you are wearing some sort of mask, and or work in a WELL ventillated area. Alkaline solution is extermemly bad for the lungs. But I'm probably not telling you anything new, as I'm SURE you have gotten a wiff if you've used it before. Stuff burns your nose hairs. haha Looking cleeean though!
  14. If that's after using a wheel. (I personally find brass wheels do a better job cleaning rust) Do you have access to compressed air? or a sand blasting gun? and or both? Because, that's what I'd recommend attacking the area with right now. Harbor freight sells real cheap sand blasting guns. Give it a blast. Knowing it was as clean as possible before you throw some paint over top of it will definitely help you sleep easier at night. And definitely prime the area before applying paint... ALWAYS prime. (bare metal)

  16. Hows the visability? I don't mind the look one bit, but what's it like when you try to look behind you? I know my bullet mirror is pretty much worthless, unless you want to look at the rear tire haha. Or you stick your head out the window
  17. Or if you wanted the "quick fix" Remove the BCDD. Block it off. Become comfortable with the idea of some "crackling/popping" exhaust noises on decel. Especially noticable right after WOT driving. But, the "better" fix is to keep the system in tact, and working how it was designed to.... So like Tony and others have said above, just get creative with intake routing, and put it in front of the radiator support. Or......lose the A/C, roll down windows, and just drive REALLY REALLY fast, since you live in Tx.
  18. I've removed these type trim pieces with a heat gun. Warm it up, then gently peel it back from one side to another. I cannot remember if it has tabs that lead into the body or not, I'm thinking..no. But, be careful of the adhesive they use once warm, it has the potential to get everywhere you don't want it to be.
  19. The company that makes the shield is called "Thermal Zero" I did in fact have to modify it slightly to accept the external wastegate actuator, as seen here.
  20. Looks like a great project! What are your plans in terms of powering the motor? Stock turbo EFI? Or some sort of standalone? It's great that you already know how to weld too, as it is a nessecary evil that comes with these cars... Whats your overall plan for the car? Looking forward to the progress.
