A musician's therapist (The $300 Z)
Zetsaz replied to Zetsaz's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
I caved and bought a new passenger fender from Black Dragon. Would have bought both if the driver side was still available. With the cost of shipping plus sanding and cleanup required on the ones I just picked up on the 240 I figured I was out about as much just to get the one I need back home, plus this way I have backup in the future if any minor accidents happen. Hard to turn down a brand new fender for $100... -
This has been talked about like a billion times already even before the thread Tony and I hijacked from a griefer who wouldn't take advice. This thread goes into some tangents on turbos but good info nonetheless http://forums.hybridz.org/topic/123369-na-l28-performance-questions-efi-non-stroker/ BRAAP's guide is standard and what most people go to http://forums.hybridz.org/topic/95316-braaps-l6-efi-induction-advice-and-tips/ Of course the best advice is to get your suspension and brakes properly sorted, and tune up your engine to proper oem specs

Jboogsthethug's 1971 240z build
Zetsaz replied to Jboogsthethug's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
I need to double check the one back home, both that I have are in decent shape. If I can get this one home with me I could sell you one cheap. If you're impatient there's an early and a late model 280z in a not so easy to find junkyard up in Preston if you're ever up that far. I took the passenger bucket off the 76 so there are still 2 usable driver ones to be had. I'm heavily doubting the cars are gone considering the guy that owns the yard works a full time job now. You'd have to find him on the weekend.- 168 replies

A musician's therapist (The $300 Z)
Zetsaz replied to Zetsaz's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
Ordered some parts from Black Dragon. Unfortunately most of what I actually wanted had already sold out now that they're close. Bought the inner and outer rubber gearshift boots that are torn on my car, a couple door handles since they were so cheap, misc door stuff that I was missing to clean things up and the cheapest car cover they had (because the nice ones that would otherwise be well over $100 were sold out... of course) Talked to my dad about getting a relative to finish up some of the more urgent metal work so I can hopefully drive the car back here and make more progress on it, but in the meantime I've just been taking some parts I'll be using off the series 1 and cleaning them up. Really happy I found the original wood knob in the middle of the junk in the back to match the steering. restoring those two is probably my first mini-project so I'm not twiddling my thumbs being away from the car. -
Tabco Rocker Panel replacement - Door gap?
Zetsaz replied to ltball's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
I only trimmed what was necessary to get it aligned where it need to be (same with the dogleg). Only after the welds were done and everything was pretty much set and unmovable was when I trimmed. -
Tabco Rocker Panel replacement - Door gap?
Zetsaz replied to ltball's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
I can answer your first question: Yes. They will definitely need trimming on top. Most tabco panels are like... 90% of the way there. The always require a bit of coercing and trimming. The rear lower quarter is the worst of them. My rockers were a good fit by comparison. Unless the floor and inner rocker repairs you made warped something or you haven't set the rocker in the right spot, you shouldn't have too severe of a gap issue. Adjusting the door hinges and mounting will only give you so much adjustment to that before the door isn't aligned properly to shut like it should. -
Jboogsthethug's 1971 240z build

Yeah, still in Washington. Car is back home. Although I did pick up a series 1 up here for parts recently. I really just need to pay someone to finish up the metal work on mine so I can move on to other things that I actually enjoy haha.- 168 replies

Scrap it, buy 2jz for that cost Kidding, hope everything goes well. What's the appeal of the 7m for you, anyway?

I saw you on there and wondered why I hadn't seen many comments from you recently. I much prefer this site. More knowledgeable crowd, on top of having a legitimate search function more organization. Facebook is not the place for the sort of tech conversations we need to have.

Daaaaaaaang. Looks great!

I was going to comment on this yesterday but forgot to and I see Tony's basically commented everything I was going to say. Definitely a good purchase! Remember most Datsun guys are cheap as hell. The Ratsun forums are a thing for a reason. That being said I'm the same guy who bought a series 1 parts car last week for $100. There are deals out there, but most of them (like mine) require waaaay more effort. Had I not been in college and making more than just enough to pay for school and the occasional trinket I definitely would have bought something closer to your car's condition and price range, instead of the $300 280z that I've now invested about 2k+ into and it still needs more rust repair, needs to be totally repainted, and will still need a suspension/brake refresh after that.

Check my thread too if you need more or you can pm me for info. I did something almost identical.

If it wasn't for all you've invested already I'd honestly be leaning towards a 2jz myself

Might still add some pictures of the damage, but here's a video for now to give you all a better idea of what I'm looking at. -

Definitely seems like battery acid considering the condition on some of the other parts. I'll get more pics tomorrow. After talking to my brother I think I'm gonna use the parts on my 280z for now and get that moving and looking good sooner, then maybe spend the next several years learning some metal work and slowly fixing the chassis on the 240z You guys should have seen our adventure getting this thing into my carport though. No brakes, no transmission right now. Back door neighbor left his truck in the alley for some stupid reason, and I was nervous we'd hit that at first since the car was moving pretty quick once it was rolling off the trailer. There's a downhill slope into my carport which was extra scary. We set up 2x4s leading down the slope and on the pavement to slow it down, but even then I couldn't get the wheel straightened out and got about 3-4 inches from hitting the wall. No incidents, so fortunately it just turned into a fun story. -

HLS-15518 Dash needs some serious cleaning, but other than that, the cracking is actually minimal Spedometer starting at 20 Both bumpers have some pitting, but other than the dent on the front one, are actually in better shape than most I've seen if I can polish them up. Fenders from both sides, as well as turn signal assemblies and headlight buckets are in great shape and don't really have more than just surface rust. Doors are untouched, all glass is there as well as interior panels. Locks work, they roll up and down too! Original mirrors still attached on both sides. Here's the craziness. Driver side has nothing more than some surface rust and minor pitting... passenger side is nonexistent. Old wood steering I can clean up. -

Yeah! I feel like once I get the parts home it'll be a huge step in the right direction. If I don't that I'll basically just need to replace floors and rails and most of the body work will be finished, minus a few odd rust patches that aren't much bigger than a quarter. rturbo, you're comment is exactly what I've been thinking. The 280z I have is in way better shape and already has some decent upgrades and I've already poured so much into some metal. I can maybe save the shell on the 240z, but all the distinct series 1 parts that people usually think about are in great shape. Mine would only have the hood and rear quarter badges on it. Nothing else. No 240z markings. -

Zetsaz replied to Zetsaz's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
Yeah, i would absolutely never call it a 240z haha. A while back though there was some thread where there was discussion over whether someday early 240 prices would be enough and they would become rare enough for someone to turn a 280z into a 240z "tribute" car. That trend might be starting I've definitely seen the value go up on them. Maybe things have changed but 7-8 years ago I would read people saying it was ridiculous to even call the early models a "series 1" because they were just slight changes throughout the years. That early models would only fetch marginally higher prices than later ones. To me it doesn't really matter, because I don't plan on selling. These have been my dream cars since I was a kid and they're purely for my enjoyment. Opinions may be swayed one direction or another when I get a chance to take pictures of the really great parts vs the conspicuously large hole in the passenger side haha. -

AWESOME NEW I recently found an early 240z that I picked up for $100... It's mostly all there but the whole driveline is taken apart. It has a giant hole in the passenger floor and firewall, and the area under the battery nonexistent. Other than that, the rear quarters, and the entire driver side is almost rust free. LOTS of really good parts that I'd been looking for for my 280z. The fenders, headlight buckets, early turn signals, taillights, and both bumpers need to be buffed up, but they're in amazing shape. Will probably just be using all those parts available to make my 280z look more like an early model, but I'm still checking out how bad the structural damage is to see if it's worth saving the 240z. Purists will probably say keep the early model and restore it, but I think most of the experienced crowd around here agrees that it's all just metal and these cars will never exactly be like the old 911s. Either way, pictures to come when I get home tonight, and it'd be great to get everyone's opinion. For now I'm running a band camp. Got the car into my carport at around 1 am last night. Long day and very little sleep haha -
If you weren't east coast I'd buy it haha
