  1. Picked up this diff as a freebie this afternoon. What is this block thingy on the spider gear shaft? 37:10 ring and pinion with large dia. ring gear bolts.Any help?
  2. Man,that really looks great.I look forward to getting that setup into mine.Just hope it can withstand some pretty serious punishment.Nice polish job also. The cleanest install I have ever seen.
  3. Was talking to a friend about your problem today. He told of a time when a diode went bad in his alt. causing a feedback situation through the alt. ground wire, sending a small voltage back through the loop.Just wondering if this might be the source of the 32.5mV reading.certainly would explain the problem till you shut it off thing. Most better charging system testers will spot this,or a rebuilders test bench.I agree with the simplify the power circuit thing too,I was losing over 1.1v from alt. to the battery till I ran a wire directly from alt output to Bat+. 30 year old wiring builds some strange resistance loads.Keep on after it man. When the problem is finally cured, rest assured it will be some silly crap you looked over 100 times.I really hate electrical gremlins.
  4. What I cant believe is that the 70 psi coming from the factory fuel pump hasn't blown the guts out of your carb(which only needs 4 psi). You need a fuel regulator BAD,as well as a low pressure fuel pump suitable for a carb application.Good news is you can get a pump like that dirt cheap at Auto Zone.Or like he said, put a mechanical pump on it(dirt cheap also).Pull the hose off the carb, put it in a bottle, hit the key and listen for the pump.If no sound, check the fuel pump fuse, and smack the pump a couple of times with a rubber mallet(I'm serious here, dont use the ball peen!) and try it again.By the way those glass filters are resrictive as hell.If the hammer trick works, head on down to the parts store, your gonna need a new pump any minute anyway.
  5. Those are great numbers to start with.Notice nowhere in this thread did we hear stuff like "made a funny knocking sound" or " puked coolant all over the floor".The motor made good power on the 1st try and now the fun begins. You all remember Brody Stones car (orange supercharged 350) from SEZ?He took off the Blower, put a T76 turbo on it and is currently tuning it.He called me from the dyno after the 1st pull.a little disappointed from mid 400 HP numbers.By the end of the session was well over 600.I couldn't agree more with the path you are taking and you will be rewarded handsomely with further tuning as time goes by.You shopuld be nothing but smiles dude.I hope to be half as successful as my current project evolves.Great work on the ride and continued success.
  6. Hey MKelly, who did that from Bham Al?My stomping grounds so just wanted a heads up...
  7. please check the differential mount,it's kind of a rubber sandwich mounted to the nose of your diff between it and the cross member. It IS broken and needs to be replaced. Then come back in the house, come back to the website, and do a search on "diff clunk".Thank you,and have a nice day!!
  8. Well I just gotta get in on this.I drove my Z back in the day with a hopped up 6 cyl and manual trans at many an autocross.I like the control of a manual trans as much as the next guy but I am definately not gonna slam my beloved slush box.More than a few times swapping gears with the stick got in the way during hard cornering maneuvers.I decided when i went V8 that I would sacrifice the extra HP needed to turn the auto by making more HP than I needed.I know for a fact I can beat many higher HP cars at the track with the auto, and quite honestly, its much easier to just smack the shifter for a gear change rather than perfectly executing a manual shift.400 HP in a 2800 lb car makes me appreciate being able to have BOTH hands on the wheel as much as possible.Just feels like I am in maximum control.Just a point of view from the dark side.By the way,I wouldn't even consider having a 4 cyl car without a manual trans.
  9. Yea,I kinda like the wheels on your driver, where could a fella get some like that,hmm... I e-mailed about those Boyd wheels when the ad was in the classifieds, never got a reply.Sure would have looked good on my project car.The Zoyota is looking good Mike, keep up the updates!
  10. Anybody notice in the engine pic,the vette has a Z master cylinder?
  11. The Z3 coupe that they made the 1st year or 2 was a better looking car as far as I'm concerned.Looked smaller too.The Z4 just never looked right to me.As I recall the Z3 was available with 3.0L M power option.Just my opinion.
  12. Since you are in Cali. get to Motorsport Auto or find somebody with a set and see if they'll fit.The carbon ones are pretty flexible so I guess they would be "fit-able".If all else fails,I have a set laying around and I could lay them up on the nearest RX7 if you beg nicely.
  13. Now THAT is a truly nasty beast.1500lbs,550 horsepower(translates to 350 in real life),still makes it very swift.Exotic looking,AWD,handmade.Where can I get me one of them thar hotrods?!
  14. Hyundai Accent.Probably the cheapest new car on the planet(for good reason).Hyundia has the 100k warranty, and I cant imagine the payment being much more than your stated needs.Bad news is it will likely spend considerable time in the shop getting those warranty repairs as the car is a steaming P.O.S.,but hell, who cares?you have 37 other cars to tote you around while it gets fixed!
  15. A friend of mine has an original Nissan lower valence that came from a G nose kit.Its for sale reasonable, and is unused.I'll try to get a pic up soon.Anybody needs it,contact me and I'll get the info to you.
  16. I'm probably gonna get smacked around for this, but the job can be done easily in your timeframe IF YOU ARE WELL ORGANIZED AND THOUROUGH IN YOUR PREPARATION! I went through the JTR book and looked over other cars before I started and had my engine and tranny completely assembled and ready to go.I drove the car into the shop friday after work, and it moved under its own chevy power tuesday. It was running sunday afternoon, but could'nt move it until i measured and had the driveshaft made.Having someone there who has done this will speed things along but a good mechanic is all you really need.It just depends on what you call "completed".If you are not afraid of the wiring(its really straightforward) and have ALL the tools you will need, its really not that bad of a job.Good luck with it!
  17. Sounds like you may have a vacuum leak somewhere to me.Check vac lines all over and also check float levels.Good luck...
  18. Holy crap Batman! I Cant believe you are doing that on stock suspension.Waiting for the Vids with great anticipation!
  19. I've been watching your posts about the water leaks and have hesitated to reply, waiting to see how the posted repairs and thread sealers fared.I had the same problems.I have ARP studs top and bottom also on a 400 block.Upon 1st startup, coolant was leaking all over the place. The engine builder said this was VERY common and he added some stop leak tabs(while I was standing there frowning).I cant remember what brand they were, but they were brown cylindrical powder that came 5 to a pack.I have seen them many times in parts stores. He added them to the system as the engine came to operating temp, and the leaks COMPLETELY stopped after 5 or 10 minutes.I too am not a big fan of stop leak, but I'll be damned if it did'nt cure the coolant leaks. After running the motor a few months,I decided, anal that I am,to flush and change my coolant.Lo and behold some coolant leaks popped up,although not as severe as the initial ones.Another couple of stop leak tabs later, all was well again.I moniter my coolant temps closely and stay on top of the level but I have had no problems either with cooling or coolant loss.I mean NONE.I did not at any point though, get substantial water into the oil.I hope grumpy will chime in on this issue as an experienced SBC builder.I changed the oil after the initial break in of about 8 hours run time and at 2000 mile intervals since then, with no signs of water.Hope this helps at least a little Pete, although its probably not what you want to hear.Good luck!
  20. May want to point out the difference between DOT3,4,5 Etc. and the benefits/disadvantages of each.Very good post on the most common brake choices. [johnc has now posted a Brake Fluid FAQ to answer this question. Pete]
  21. Me too please.By the way,SR240,It was'nt on purpose, but my silver 71 240 is starting to look a lot like yours(which I REALLY like alot). You just executed my plan before I did.Thats a nasty beast you got there sir!

    Q45 Vlsd!

This is for SURE a r200vlsd from a q45,I saw it removed myself. The rear diff cover has 2 bolts on top,not 3.And I have the Nissan parts breakdown for both the r230 and the r200v.Internally they are VERY similar but there is NO QUESTION here, these are both r200's.The picture is a little deceiving, but the housings are almost exactly the same size, except for pinion length, and the ring gears are the same size, except for the size of the ring gear bolts and holes.I'll be happy to photograph both ring gears against a tape measure if necessary for maximum peace of mind here, but the lsd is ABSOLUTELY a 200mm.
