  1. so I kinda popped my L28ET, it was a 183k mile junkyard motor so I'm nto heart broken, I recently built a Z31T and have been thinking the VG might be a better fit in my autocross 240Z, my goal is 400 whp (the old L28 was at about 300) I figure the movement of weight rearward would be benefitial for weight distribution I've looked and searched and can see that some of you push the engine further back, by deleting the crosover pipe? and have to relocate the shifter, I was thinking I mgith be able to re-use my modified trans mount and shaft from the 280zx t5, anyone know if the output spline and trans mount are the same on the 300zx t5? and if so anyone know if this putc the engine too far forward and interferes with the crossmsmber? and of course the turbo steering shaft issue, the a/c compressor location looks ideal, but that means fabbing a manifold, anyone have any advice to lend after tackling some of these issues yourselves? I do happen to have a couple of Z32 stock turbo's they are supposed ot be good for about 300 whp? but I hate having to do twice the work and then the thought of upgrading ro replacing 2 turbo's makes the job a lot more costly and less fun
  2. I ordered a set of brake brackets as well, he said it was gonna be a week before he can have them made
  3. it's been years ago and my memory might be suspect but I seem to recall my 90 hardbody SEV6 had a crosover pipe, perhaps I'm wrong it's been years back as for the egnine mounts, the turbo z31 moves the drivers side mount forward to allow for the turbo to sit where the mount would be on the n/a, so staggering the mounts is fine, nissan did it too
  4. I think what he is saying is that unless you got the fab skills needed to make your own mounts etc, it's gonna cost you a lot to have it done, if you can't weld then the L28ET just bolts in and therefore cheaper to swap in
  5. yup, all it does is recirculate a bit of unburtn exhaust, if you don't have emissions testing in your area take it off, I have removed it on my 240zt, my 87 300zxt and my 90 300zxtt, all run fine without
  6. I've heard some people encounter weird problems with the on board ignition circuit, might be worth converting to external and see if it clears up
  7. not seeing a real good reason to do so, I am pretty sure the distributor is int he way, and I personally hate the Z32 intake, the jdm single turbo had a much better intakin IMHO, loked similar to the Z31
  8. yup, my 87, was an auto n/a, now a 5 speed turbo, megasquirted, look for it in the next issue of GRM in the challange coverage
  9. another vote for the adjustoable bosch unit, and keep in mind the base fuel pressure at idle (thinking it was supposed to be 37 psi?) is supposed to be measured with the vac line off and plugged
  10. your map and boost gauge are all over the place? are they bouncing over say 10 psi? or just 0-5 psi? I had a weird surge taht woudl happed under boost that took me forever to discover was a failing fuel pump, when the boost pressure would rise the pump would shut off, I'd loose power, pressure would drop and the fuelpump would come back on and repeat
  11. it's be cheaper to convert to megasquirt and make a new harness, I already sold my Z31 oe harness
  12. I had a recouring leak at my #1 exhaust runner, the coolant form years of leakign had pitted the aluminum and as a result my exhaust gasket kept blowing out the bottom, I had the side of the head surfaced at a machine shop when I upgraded to arp headstuds and metal hg, no problems since
  13. are you running a decent intercooler? I was running 13 psi on my non intercooled stock junkyard motor using slightly tweaked versions moby's maps, at 15 psi I got pinging which is why i ran at 13, after I went i/c I upped to 18 psi and the head started seeping, I went metal HG and APP headstuds
  14. goog god my typing sucks, and BTW the build quality on the Z32 is far superior to the C4, I gotta admit the vetts of the same era seem chincy in comparison
  15. these cars are overweigth, and more of a grant touring car than a true sports car, I personally feel tt is more closely related to the infiniti's than the Z's (well ok the Z31 GLL models were pretty bad too) they are sexy, and make road trips in confort, they do have great suspension and brakes, but minda underpowered for their bloated weight and are a huge massive PITA to work on, the engineers on this one were pure sadists, I hate workign on my Z32TT, if I ever get around to replacing the oil pump I'm thinking it might get replaced with a Z33
  16. you can just loop the stock lines, it really cleans thing up
  17. turbo swap for sure, my car placed 10th in the GRM $2005 challenge, my car was overpriced to start with, I could do it again better and cheaper, the turbo is power you can use at the strip and the autocross, and spend some money on some good tires, this is an area that really makes a difference in the autocross, and if you're not an avid autocrosser, find someone who is or get some seat time, driver is the single largest difference
  18. I converted my Z31, just remove all the power parts, and loop the hydraulic hard lines on the rack, not a big deal
  19. the Z31 T3 uses the same internals as the 280ZX t3, so you won't get any power gains from it, it does however use a downpipe with less of a bend or you can just make your own downpipe and get even more flow, and I think 300 whp is aobut as much as your gonna get for a stock turbo, if you want more you're gonna want a lager compressor
  20. actually the z31 suspension is very similar to the s130
  21. I believe all synthetic's have the addetive in them, I know mobil 1, redline and royal purple all do
  22. ummm... you can put camber plates on the back of a z31 or s130 they just won't do anything, the plates he linked to are both for the fronts, one is simeple a solid mount hat the other is the adjustable camber plate and the rest are for other chassis, none are for the rear of an s130, the s130 uses a trailing arm, the shock position has nothing to do with the amount of camber, if you want to adjust the rear camber you either modify the crossmsmber where the trailing arms mount op or put adjusters int he training arms themselves, I havn't seem the arms themselved modified but seems logical, real plates, ain't gonna happen, and aoneone who says they do is an idiot
  23. I store my tires with no air, my understanding is that the air pressure pushes the oils out of the tire which speeds up the drying process, it certainly doesn't hurt to store them without air, but you must store them lying flat to prevent ahy flat spotting
  24. yup it was the challange car, I just took the shutter wheel from the l28et and stuck it in the z31 distributor, it's missing one of the alignment holes but it punches through when you tighten it down, even the plug at the bottom of the dist was the same not sure if you heard/saw it run on saturday but it's on all 6 now and running like a champ, one plug died the day of autocross so i ran on 5 cylinders and still managed 15th with the extra cylinder I like to think I'd have been a bit faster, and coning my fast run didn't help
