I would definitely shop for a WRX, prolly a wagon even.
you ought to be able to find one. If not, for that money i would by an older one(93-99 or so) and swap an STI motor. Reliable and AWD.

since you cut the ears off and are rewelding them, did you just eyeball it at the same height as the old placement or did you spend any time trying to get driveshaft geometry at all? Just curious, since this seems to be our situation with the z32 trans on an L.
it definitely wont be an easy task, ive sized it up myself. If I had the choice . . . i would definitely get a turbo KA setup going in there. Course it doesnt sound like this is a worthy candidate with the rust and all.
I made 274hp and 326 ft lbs and went 12.5-12.7@111 on your exact setup plus 370cc injectors on 15psi boost. that little bit of extra fuel up top on stock efi really helped! If you need more than that, i wouldnt worry about a cam, I'm still running a completely stock head/cam. Just get a turbo.
I find this very funny. I mean ive seen with my own eyes how zcar guys hate these things. Same with the DSM crowd. But the mustang crowd SWEARS by them. And i know some very high horsepower cars running them and doing alot of drag racing. We have one at the shop that makes 612hp and is only a pulley away from 800 running SPEC.

Nope thats just cruising, typically between 10-15 in/hg.
And just in case it matters, cruising at 75mph, 37-40 degrees total timing, about 15.0-15.5 AFR's, and around 1300 EGT's.
