It's possible but you need to do some serious hole cutting to run the ducts. I think it could help reduce cockpit fumes if left as is.

What is your Top Speed. On or Off Track.
cygnusx1 replied to v80z's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
A Z can go fast depending on what you mean by fast and what the setup is, and yes there are always "fishing stories". You be the judge. I think a factory stock 280Z might be able to reach 135 or so. Just a guess. Any faster and I may call "fishing story". My Z with the L28ET in it's current tune and configuration (300rwhp) FEELS like it will do about 145-155mph. I would never try it on the streets here. I would love to try it under controlled conditions. Call me wuss. I feel that as we get older, we get wiser, sometimes. Sorry being wise and non-observant, I didn't even realize this is in the V8 section. I lack two cylinders. -
Anyone interested in a custom Holset downpipe?
cygnusx1 replied to GrayZee's topic in Turbo / Supercharger
Take some photos of the mock up if you get a chance. Thanks. I am hoping that my current DP won't interfere with the Z32 tranny when I put it in. -
Let's see, we have a choice these days. Burn 1 gallon for every 15 miles in a big, slow, behemoth truck...or burn 1 gallon every 15 miles mashing the pedal in a fast, agile, sporty Datsun Z. How would you rather spend the money? I know how I would.

Nice. Sounds awesome. "Hello, headquarters. Yeah, I'd like to run a trace on cardboard license plates."
-
You know you are fast when you have to say, "We just gotta de-tune the wheel stands a little bit." Nice!

Builder/Owner top left. I walked up to the owner and said "It's finished isn't it?" He said "Yup".

Thick wheel adapters? Check out this Ferrari replicar build on Youtube
cygnusx1 replied to hughdogz's topic in Non Tech Board
Those wheel adapters weren't thick. They were LONG! -
Nice. Are you spying on the competition over there? I see a FedEx plane. I love being around planes also. I think it comes from having spent a lot of time flying back and forth across the Atlantic with my family when I was a child. Enjoy the job! Good luck with it.

Carbon Fiber Wheels?
cygnusx1 replied to JeffGarcia77's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Hi Jeff, Do you realize that the average price people pay for a Z on this site is less than the cost of two of those wheels? They are very cool. Just on the other side of most of our financial fences. -
The 45's will do that but might take up more space. It's pretty tight under there.

Phil, You can have my boot if I still have it. It's a little bit cheezy but it worked for me for a few years with no issues. Basically, I bought a PVC transom pass through fitting, cut a hole in the boot and screwed in the fitting. Then I spent about an hour on the grinder, shaping the fitting that protruded inside to boot for better flow. Yes, it's not perfect but it made 265HP/300ft-lbs like that. My boot is shortened to fit it into the 280Z but you can simply put a hole in your boot and screw in my fitting. Cheezy, Cheap, Looks OK, and makes me fast. That should be my motto. ^ ^ ^----This part is inside the boot I rounded and thinned it out on a bench grinder.

I saw that this morning. My first thought was paint it all white, and it might not look so bad.

I originally had it "Y" into the compressor intake boot blowing back at the compressor, but when I went to MSII, I redesigned the entire air intake for a cone filter right into the compressor. I replaced a VERY restrictive air intake system with a direct feed into the turbo. I got rid of the AFM. At that point, I let my BOV (recirc valve) breath free. It was then that I noticed flutter when I backed off the throttle under light loads. Why: a) My turbo was blowing more air at lower loads due to the better intake I could hear it now because my valve was vented to atmosphere c) both Whatever the cause, I now noticed that the recirc valve sits open at idle. I know it's supposed to let the compressor vent so that it can keep up speed between load demands but does it really need to vent that "sensitively"? By "sensitively" I mean: I am going up a hill gently at 1/4 throttle and I am still in vacuum, when I slight back the throttle, I get lots of flutter. It seems there is no hysterisis in the valve. It acts "nervous" I tried a restrictor orifice in the vacuum/boost line. I tried damping grease on the slide valve. I tried loosening the spring. I have NOT tried tightening it so much that it is closed at idle. Bear in mind that this is all when "grocery getting". When I put the hammer down, she holds boost and blows off during shifts like a good BOV.

I had a hunch that bypass valve were sprung differently but you don't really know until you've seen both. I will try a stronger spring and/or more shimming. Thanks.
-
Datman, I love that sig pic! I use MSII with no AFM, so air leaking in through the BOV is not an issue except for unfiltered air at idle. Maybe I'll try really clamping down on the spring pressure to keep it nearly shut at idle. At part throttle shifts, personally, I feel it vents too much. Also, it gets into a flutter at part throttle shifting with light or zero boost. I think it's just the BOV bouncing off the column of air in the intake tract. I find it hard to believe that it's compressor surge because all of this is at fairly low loads and engine speeds.
-
Yup the BOV is open 1/2 way at idle. I can feel the valve with my finger. I can even feel it move to the closed position when I crack open the throttle to drop intake vacuum.
-
I did some searches and found varying opinions and it seems that it really does not matter one way or the other. At idle, my BOV is about 1/2 way open and I can hear it whistle/chirp as it opens when I let of the gas, even if I am not in boost. It's kind of annoying. I already have about an inch of washers behind the spring and it's still open at idle. It holds boost fine, I just think it opens too easily during moderate driving with little or no boost being generated. When I hold my hand at the BOV exit and rev the engine lightly to about 2k in neutral, I can feel it blowing the turbo-air out after I snap the throttle shut. It's a TurboXS Racing Bypass Valve Type-H34 vented to atmosphere. I want some opinions/ideas/thoughts on BOV operation.

I just watched the old movie "Who Killed the Electric Car". It was enlightening, but I do take it with a grain of salt. It did however, spark my interest in electric vehicles. I already fly electric RC, and the power in those LiPo batteries is amazing. I am getting the itch to build an electric car... I am following this thread closely. Keep up the great work.

An old photoshop project of mine.

Oh yeah Phil maybe I should start a new project Z for him, to keep him out of mine! I'll pass that by the wife and let you know how it goes.

Yup got a ticket for Washington DC/Maryland already. Congrats on the boy. It get's easier....and then I hear it gets harder.

Ever since our boy arrived about 15 months ago, my wife and I were no longer able to go for a cruise in the Z. We missed the old days, so we brought the little one over to Grandma's house in the minivan and made reservations for dinner a few towns away. We returned home to swap the minivan for the Z and off we drove into the sunset. The forecast tonight was for rain but there was a bright sun on the horizon. It sure was fun to cruise in the Z with my wife, to a well earned, luxurious dinner in a ritzy little town nearby. The town is littered with high dollar p-cars and f-cars and what not. When we finished dinner and dessert we stepped outside for a walk through the town and there was a couple looking at the Z. The woman said that she loved the car and asked if it was a Hybrid. She saw the sticker. My wife actually took the lead and explained the whole engine swap thing. We walked through town, and on the way back to the car, another couple was trying to figure out the year of my Z. I walked up and said "76". The guy was a Nissan fan and has a really well done early Frontier parked next to my Z. We chatted a bit. Then we hit the road and I got two thumbs up from a couple of different Porsche drivers, a thumbs up from two kids in a Honda, and a beep and a wave from a gentleman in a Nissan minivan. A few bursts to 15psi on the twisties and we were home before any rain began. What a great evening with the wife and the Z. Oh, and my sincere apologies to the guido in the Deville that tried to one-up me on the parkway. I passed him at about 75 and he decided that he wanted to show his girl how fast his Deville was. I suppose after he tailgated me and then saw me disappear before his eyes, he had to make up excuses to his girly instead. I think it was a DTS-M Deville.

Compressor Bypass Valve - Which one leaks at idle?
cygnusx1 replied to Brad-ManQ45's topic in Turbo / Supercharger
This is an old thread but since I used the search function to find "BOV open idle" which is what I just realized my BOV is doing, I thought I would post. Yes, my BOV sits about 1/2 way open at idle. Even with about 1" spacer behind the spring for extra pressure it's open at idle. It holds boost fine but I feel like it releases to open too early when I am backing off the throttle. Sometimes it opens when I am still in partial throttle and partial boost. I tried putting some grease on the valve slider to dampen the valve but it made no difference. It seems like it gets too much vacuum too soon. It's a TurboXS race valve vented to atmosphere. Any tips? The vacuum source is pretty much the middle of the intake manifold. Can I try picking up the vacuum signal somwhere where it's less strong? Maybe I need to put in a parallel hose with check valve and restrictor. The check valve will close during vacuum and force the vacuum to go through the other line which would be restricted with an orifice?
