240Z #00855 Rust Repair and Restoration
rturbo 930 replied to Papabohnert's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
Not surprised, Mine is rusted in that same spot. I have pics from another member from when he did the same repair. I'm not sure if this album is private or not, let me know if you can't see it. http://s78.photobucket.com/user/rturbo930/library/jmortensen%20rust%20repair There is definitely a point where you have to say 'it's just too much work'. If this were a later car, I'd probably tell you to scrap it. Being such an early car, I'd be more willing to give it a chance at a new life. I don't know if you did already, but I would definitely suggest signing up at http://www.classiczcars.com/page/index.html and show them what you've got. They can give you much better advice than I can, and if it is worth restoring, you might even find a buyer if you decide not to pursue it yourself. I'm not sure what the cutoff is for what would be considered 'very early' but I'm guessing under #1000 makes the cut, or close to it. -

I figured that's what you meant. That area is going to be a pain to fix, but I'm 95% sure you can use the 280 parts car to fix that vs fabricating from scratch. -

Here's a thread detailing the process of reskinning the roof if you go that route: http://forums.hybridz.org/topic/66240-successful-roof-re-skin-s30/ The 280z rails under the floor pans are beefier, but I wouldn't recommend using them. #1, they're designed to fit the contours of the 280 floor pans, and #2, on a car like this (low VIN, possibly #s matching), I just don't think it would be appropriate. I would recommend staying as close to original as possible. If you really want more strength, look into bad dog rails and subframe connectors. The roof repair... I don't know. Reskinning is a big job, but I've also read that patching a roof and getting it straight again is extremely difficult to do. What do you mean by rust underneath the drip rails? Pics? -

Okay, in order: 1 and 2) Probably fine. You're going to find surface rust in a lot of the cavities. IMO it's generally nothing to worry about. 3) Looks like surface rust, maybe a little pitting. Not enough to worry about. Wire wheel + treat appropriately - something like POR 15. 4) Looks like some rust scale on the right of the pic. I'd knock it down a bit with a wire brush (hand held) or maybe some sand paper or something. Whatever you can get in there. Then treat with POR-15 or product of choice. 5) 99% chance it's no big deal. Wire wheel it and see what you got. 6) Looks like surface rust/mild pitting, not rotten. Wire wheel and POR-15. 7) Doglegs are one of the most common rust spots, especially that seam. My guess is that your dogleg is rotting from the inside out. If you want to investigate without cutting the whole thing out, consider drilling a hole on the backside of the dogleg, in the wheel well, fairly close to the fender lip. If you can get a borescope or something you should be able to see what shape it's in. Or just cut the damn thing off and weld a new one on. It's not necessarily a hard spot to fix, depending how you do it (cut it out within the body lines). Anyway, that's my take on it, for whatever it's worth.- 76 replies

I should've read the thread first. Here's my opinion on two areas you posted. The surface rust on the rocker there looks fine IMO. Also, I'm curious about that thing in front of the car that looks like it's made out of copper tubing - what is that? That needs replacement. Looks like you're a pretty good fabricator though, so bending up a new piece shouldn't be a problem. Edit: Not sure why the pics showed up as links but I don't know how to fix it, so they'll stay that way.- 76 replies

The car does flex at the pillars. The cracks you see are because the steel chassis flexes, but the lead filler in the joints does not, and the result is a crack. As for the broken welds on the trans tunnel, IIRC, JohnC has said that the chassis flexes a lot at the front and rear bulkheads, which is at the firewall, and the area more or less where the welds failed on your car. The solution is a triangulated strut brace up front, and a roll bar in the rear. My take on when to cut rust out, vs just treating it - if it is pitted enough that the metal no longer has it's structural integrity, cut it out. surface rust that you can just wire brush off, and minor pitting, I would probably leave alone. If you're still unsure, post a good pic of the area(s) you're concerned about and I can give you an opinion.- 76 replies

240Z #00855 Rust Repair and Restoration
rturbo 930 replied to Papabohnert's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
280z floors are totally different than 240z floors. You can get replacement floor pans from zeddfindings (google it). It sounds like you want to do something close to a restoration. Check out classiczcars.com - that site is geared more towards restorations than this site, which is pretty much dedicated to bastardizing these cars. It does seem to have a lot of rust, but I wouldn't call it too far gone just yet. That can all be fixed... just takes time. And you're doing an Auto Restoration major, so I think this could actually be a great opportunity for you, and the car as well. IMO it's worth saving, based on what I see. As for the rockers, you could probably use the ones on the 280z to repair that part. Not many other ways to replace the inner rocker except for a body cut from another car, or a handmade replacement. -
Just FYI in case you didn't know, not all harnesses were the same. There were a handful of changes over the years.

Car update with advice need on roof approach.
rturbo 930 replied to AkumaNoZeta's topic in Fabrication / Welding
Welcome back. Everything I've read suggests that it is extremely difficult to patch the roof and have it come out straight. I can't really see any detail - your pictures kinda suck (sorry!), but if it's only the roof skin that's damaged, I think the easiest (relatively) thing to do would be to replace the roof skin. That said, that big dent by the C pillar is from accident damage? Have you checked to see if your chassis is straight? Looks like you've put a lot of work into that chassis (looks good, too), so it would really suck to find out your chassis is tweaked. -
Awesome! I have an '88 325is. Love it (at the moment). I'm on R3V as well BTW.

It almost looks like your car was back-halved? That looks way bigger than a stock Z wheel well, although I might need to refresh my memory.

Not quite right - If I am not mistaken, all '81 and '82 ZXTs have solid lifters, and only '83 ZXTs with the P90a have hydraulic lifters. And I've read that even some of the P90a heads have solid lifters from the factory. I bought my ZXT donor for $600. I still haven't gotten around to parting it out yet all these years later, but I wouldn't be surprised if I break even, or even turn a profit after selling what I don't need. -
Looks kind of familiar. Same as this one? http://forums.hybridz.org/topic/96644-1972-datsun-240z-rb25det-magnificent-rotisserie-restoration/

Tough call. Are you planning on keeping this car for a long time? It looks like a good, solid shell with very little rust, it's just not a 240z. Really shitty of him to lie to you like that, but I'm not surprised. Wasn't getting a great vibe from him in this thread, seemed like he kept flip flopping. First he wanted to sell, then it was gonna be his sons car... not sure what's up with that. But if you like the car, you might consider just going with it. Regarding the title, as far as I know, in some situations you can have a new state issued title, though I'm not sure exactly how that works, or if it would apply to your situation. And, of course, might want to keep quiet about it unless you don't mind losing the car. Again, it's a good car (from the pics anyway), just not what it's advertised as. I can definitely understand wanting to stick it to this guy though... but you gotta pick your battles. Losing the car, and the money to pay the lawyer... that's not a win for you.

I think someone did buy this car, and the seller apparently forgot to mention the VIN swap. I sent him a PM with a link to this thread last night, no reply... This is his thread: http://forums.hybridz.org/topic/123536-need-advice-on-differentiating-70-from-77or-8/

77/78 280Zs had space savers. I don't have a clue why your vinyl doesn't fit. Maybe pics would help?

BEST MODEL TO INVEST IN? 240, 260, 280
rturbo 930 replied to CHATZ's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
+1 IMO, if you're in it for the money, you bought it for the wrong reasons. -
+1 for pre-made floor pans. When people replace the floors with flat metal, it just looks cheap and half assed IMO. Considering how nice the rest of the car is, I'd definitely go to the effort to do it right.

A lot of that looks like very minor rust. Take some good, clear, close up pics of the various areas so we can see a bit more detail. In the last pic, I see some minor pitting, but I don't think it's worth cutting out and replacing. I think I'd treat it and call it good. But your pics are kinda blurry, so I'm not sure. Looks like a lot of it is at the front of your floors. If it definitely needs replacing, I think I would just take it out in one big chunk, and replace that. From about where that patch is welded in already, and forward, I would cut that out and replace it, and just do a patch for that little guy towards the back near the rocker. Not as big a project as doing a total floor replacement, but probably easier than doing a bunch of separate patches. There's a number of ways you could do it though.

Yeah, I prefer the Z 5 speed too. I had a short shifter in my E30, couldn't stand it. WAY too notchy. Even now after putting the stock shift lever back in, it's a bit notchy for my taste. Might be something wrong with my trans, but I'm thinking more likely, it's just their nature.

Why not turbo the L28 that's in it? -
The car you drove likely had old, worn out bushings in the shifter assembly. The G260 is a fine transmission, but IMO pointless to try to adapt it to a Datsun. I'd sell it to someone with a BMW. Good engines, except for that damn timing belt. Needs a chain.
