1971 240z RB Restoration
rturbo 930 replied to shootingchill's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
I looked at the pics first and read the post after... got a little scared when I saw those pics. Glad you're going to have them redone. Was there anything actually wrong with the roof joint there? There's a leaded joint there. It has been known to rust out, but not often, kinda wondering if your "bodyman" thought the factory joint needed replacing. Anyway, welcome to the forum! Looking forward to the build, although I hope in the future the pics will all be the right way up. Got a little dizzy going through that set lol. -
Well, your pics don't really show much, but your idea of "pretty rough rust" looks more like an east coaster's idea of "rust free". If there's no major problems hiding, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. And given the way the classic car market is, I wouldn't feel bad paying as much as $2k for that... but again... I'm on the east coast. Maybe offer a grand and see where it goes.

The colored letters are a clever little detail. I don't know if I would have thought of that myself for a carbon piece, but I like it! I hope you post your tiny house build here too (I'm assuming you will, but a little encouragement doesn't hurt). While I don't entirely understand how/why you would live in a ~250 sq/ft house - even my family's beach house is bigger than that, and it is TINY at about 700sq ft, and it doesn't even have an indoor shower - I'm still interested in seeing it take shape. Keep up the great work, man.

Yeah I've been following your thread. I've been putting off doing my rockers for years (mostly procrastination and other projects). Got in waaayy over my head. Totally underestimated how much work it is. Before/after pictures in someones build thread make it look much easier than it is. They're not meant to be a direct fit though, you do have to fit and trim them to some extent, and I think the rockers and doglegs are some of their better pieces.
-
I really don't know either. I have those lower corners, and IMO they're unusable. The compound curve that makes up the rear corner is totally off. Not by a little bit either. I'm no body man but considering how much work they need, I think if you had the skill to make them fit properly, then you would probably have the skill to just make your own - which would probably be easier. They're junk if you ask me. That rear panel seems to be better, but it's flat, when it needs to be curved. And I recently learned that the rockers they sell have an issue where the steel is stamped in such a way that it basically shears at the flanged bit right before the front fender. Not impressive at all.

S30/LS/turbo/Powerglide/Tex101/9"SRA build diary

Pictures are worth a thousand words. -
Datsun Spirit has a kit out now too. http://datsunspirit.com/shop/itb-setup-for-l6/

Glad I saw this. I just checked my Tabco replacement rocker, and it has the same defect. Might be worth contacting them about if it's a common issue.

I really couldn't agree more with these two. I don't know if I've ever seen a tail light swap that actually looks good. Not just unique, but well executed. There's plenty of "unique" cars out there that would be better off scrapped. Execution is paramount, and your idea just doesn't fit in with the design of the S30 at all. Sorry. Litman's taillights are well executed. If you want to do something different with your tail lights, I would suggest taking the basic design elements of the original tail lights and modernizing them.

Incredible. Well done, Derek! -
The guy JohnC used for his carbon parts has the molds I believe and is making them. No idea on contact info.

Seibon hoods and Retro Spec parts

Arif, what does that hood weigh? -
Looks like you're off to a good start! I don't know how you're posting pictures, but I use an image hosting site, previously photobucket, now flickr since photobucket is awful now. Copy and paste the BB image code link, and that should do it. Let me know if you still need help and I can go into more detail. Also, slightly embarrassed to admit this, but I love your post formatting. Easy reading.

Looks good to me.

1973 Laguna Z / RB25DET project
rturbo 930 replied to schlimgenmatt's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
Which is which? The one you have labeled Laguna Seca doesn't look right - way too dark. The middle one looks most like LS blue. But I would say, referencing the first picture, the left one is my favorite, followed by the one on the right, and finally the one in the middle. -
I have a picture saved of a car that looks similar to that one. It isn't this one, but the color on this one is also pretty similar: http://forums.hybridz.org/topic/105243-pure-240z-sexiness/ That one is 115 blue metallic, which is a factory color. This is the one I have saved, which I also found on flickr. No idea who owns it, but I'd love to know.

Tire chains aren't really practical (or likely legal) for any kind of on-road driving. Of course, there's studded tires, but where I am (NJ), studded tires make absolutely no sense, and would likely just destroy our roads unnecessarily. We actually don't get as much snow down here as you might think, especially not in huge amounts, so we don't really get that much time to practice driving in such conditions. Even when it does snow, roads are usually clear within a few days at the most unless it's a particularly large snowfall.

How I Fixed My Battery Tray and Frame Rail
rturbo 930 replied to 4.8240z's topic in Fabrication / Welding
Looks like good work. I think the pics could be bigger though. -
Michael, I couldn't agree more. I like this place, and I am thankful for it's existence, but it has really slowed to a crawl, largely due to social media, I think. IMO, this is flawed thinking. People are social beings by nature and will generally gravitate to social atmospheres. If there is nothing here to satisfy that social need, people will gradually stop coming here, as they already have, and once everyone has left, you will no longer have a forum. Yes, it is important to keep the tech sections strictly technical, but I think this place needs an off topic section to keep this place alive. Every single other forum I'm on has an active OT section, and it is that section more than any other that allows members to create a sense of community that will draw people in, and keep them coming back.

Engine Bay Frame Rail Butt Weld Opinions
rturbo 930 replied to 4.8240z's topic in Fabrication / Welding
6" on either side of the butt weld, so, 12" total? Honestly, I think a 4-6" piece (2-3" on either side of the butt weld) would be more than enough. To answer your question, I think you have a good plan, and I doubt that it would ever fail. Mind you I am not an expert by any definition of the word, but I think I have a decent idea of what would or would not make a suitable repair. Edit: Not sure about POR-15 though. I know it's a popular product, but IMO a lot of people use it in situations where it's not really the best option. Whatever you use, make sure it's something you can weld through/near. I'm thinking a weld though primer with zinc would be a good alternative... but do some of your own research on that. -
Got a new 240z today, and an introduction
rturbo 930 replied to Floorless240z's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
Welcome back. I don't really use the forum search function anymore, especially since we switched forum software - it's been 5 years and I still don't like it. Instead, I just type my search terms into google followed by site:*website*. Works great. -

Some places have the ability to match a paint with just a sample. Getting an accurate sample would be difficult, but maybe give that try? Let me know what you find out. I really like that color too.
