  1. A magneto just an ignition system that creates its own spark as opposed to having a battery power source. They are used a lot on race cars. I think that if you use an engine that is fuel injected you will need the computer (ecu) that controls the injection. My engine is carburated so I didn't need it. Besides I'm pretty old school and don't under stand the complexities of computer controlled engines. Something you need to consider though is what the smog laws are like where you live. Here in southern Oregon my car is old enough to get around the smog inspection. But like I said, a 350 is a pretty easy swap and will make a Z31 a really fun ride. Joe
  2. Alf, Quit sniveling! You should be workin' on that car, not listening to that devils music.
  3. I've done a 350 in my '84. You'll have to fab front motor mounts or else have Alf sell you a set of the ones he made. depending on what you use for a trans you will have to modify the rear cross member. You may also have to trim the "seam" on the firewall to clear the distributor. The only place that you might have clearance problems is getting the exhaust to clear the steering rack. I used blockhugger headers, and it was pretty tight. I think Alf used cast manifolds. As for it being a tight fit, there is more room around the 350 than there was around the V-6. Not only that but if you run aluminum heads and intake, there isn't very much weight difference between the two. Some minor things will have to be addressed too. For instance the fuel line will need to be changed to 3/8" from the tank to the engine. I removed the ECU because I run a magneto. The temp sender will need to be changed in the 350, but a good parts store will be able to set you up. Ihave a lot of pics so if you need any, PM me, and I'll email what you may want to see. There are a few pics in my gallery. Let me know if I can give you any information
  4. I bought the front and rear suspension from an xj40 Jaguar, It came with 8" dayton spoke wheels that I think will look great on the Z31. Here is my current stupid question: There is some light surface rust on the chrome and even thoughit will come off with fine steel wool and turtle wax I can't get my fat little arthritic fingers in between the spokes to polish behind them. Does anyone have a suggestion on an easy way to do this?
  5. Ahhh, Vindication at last! Of coarse there isn't much left of my Z31 . 355 sbc 350 th/ Bradley manual valve body/ 3200 stall Dana 44 lsd Jaguar xj40 front and rear suspension Brembo 12" disc brakes Instruments by autometer
  6. Damn, perhaps he should have tried to negotiate a softer landing. As for ridiculing him, read my signiture.
  7. The only time I get in the left lane is to run some dickweed in a high dollar car who can't figure out how to use a dimmer switch!!
  8. Seattle has a lot of really neat stuff. There is the Music Experience the restaurant on the top of the space needle, Tours of the Lady Washington, (Tall Ship) sports (Mariners, Sea Hawks, and Sonics) Boeing's museum of flight, and Underground Seattle. If you like movies, there is an Imax, and Cinerama. And if you are there at the right time, there is thunderboat racing. The whales ar in the sound all year I think. Basically if you can't entertain yourself in seattle, you must be dead.
  9. Try this. Its unorthidox, but when all else fails.... Put the plugs in so the engine will make compression and crank the engine with the starter. oh yeah, it might be a good idea to put in a couple of studs just for locaters.
  10. Unfortunatly, the car isn't totaled. If it were I could flip it over on its top. But thanks for the suggestion.
  11. I just bought the front clip and rear suspension out of a Jag XJ6. The suspension is still under the car, and I need to get it out. Has anyone ever pulled these things? Can anybody give me any advise about getting them out? Thanks, Joe
  12. Looks good so far. Since everyone is making suggestions, try this. Split the top of the intake airbox and build a sheetmetal blower intake and use a 3/53 jimmy blower on it. and of course don't forget the zoomie headers. You're doing great work, keep it up. Joe
  13. I have no idea what it is like in Portland, but you may want to check the law. In the Rogue Valley if your car is over 21 there isn't an emissions test. (mine is an '84) Down here if you live outside the I and M zone there is no smog either. Good Luck Joe
  14. Sorry to pop yer bubble, but I have blockhuggers on my small block though they are a little tight arond the steering rack. Alf, I think I'm fiinally going to do the front suspension. I've got a line on a dead XJ jag for a donor. and while I'm at it I'm putting in a Griffin radiator. I intend to have it standing straight up so I can pull it without removing the front facia. Joe
  15. I've been married for over 40 years, so here's some advce. When ever there is an argument, just remember you always get the last word: "Yes Dear" Congrats
  16. I need to change the rear suspension in the Z31. It needs shocks, springs, and a full set of bushings. I don't want to spend that much on a diff that isn't limited slip, and has a ratio that is way too low for me to run on the street. (th350 no od) I want to go with the 8.8" Ford out of a Cobra. What I have in mind is to build a differential subframe (much like a Jag) and double A-arm suspension. I can do the fabrication, but have been putting this project off for a long time. I'm getting tired of the stupid car squatting under acceleratrion. If the car is launched hard, I swear I hear the exhaust hit the ground. Here is what I need to find out. Will the mustang half shafts handle the horsepower and torque? (392 hp/ 420 ft lb torque) and will the double frame suspension deep the car from dragging its tail?
  17. You may be right, but still, if you added a couple of turbos..........
  18. Actually, that pic shows that somewhere out in those hills is a really tiny Irish dude with a pot of gold that will infect you with the old "while I'm at it" disease. My advice is to be very careful!
  19. I have found that the local stores are great places to buy packets of shop rags. They also are good places for information, if you just ask the right questions* ("Can you tell me where the closest NAPA store is?") Hereis a sample of the wrong questions: Him: "What is it?" Me: "It's a spark plug wire for a 350 chevy." Him: "What year?" Me: "It doesn't matter, just give me a universal kit." Him:"I need to have the year." Me: "Just get me a set of plug wires for a small block chevy. I'll have to cut them to length for my installation." Him: "What car are they going in?" Me: "Nissan 300ZX" (This is my biggest mistake! Never tell them the truth) Him: "I don't think we have wires for a Nissan" Me: (At last, the right reply) "Er, can you tell me how to find the closest NAPA store?"
  20. quote: crotch rocket(i think it was a kawasaki.. but my recolection on what kind of jap sport bike it was is not so good ) vs prius prius kept up with the bike through the first gear (did this one over in freemont CA heading twords the dumbarton bridge) mad.gif In Freemont heading towards the Dumbarton bridge???????????????????? Boy the things must have a lot of acceleratin for that 20 feet where there isn't any traffic>
  21. I would rather send a check to Dan. This site has to be expensive in both time and money. I have nothing against publicity, and tell anyone I meet about Hybrid Z. However, I am afraid that we could be overrun with flamers, purests, and hordes of the braindead. The preceding is just my uninformed opinion;) By the way, money is above chin and below nose... the check is in the mail. Joe
  22. It's 104 here today and I haven't been near the 117* uninsulated garage. When I get the Z31 out I intend to insulate it and hang sheetrock. It may sound strange but, I've been shopping around for a used Thermo King off the front of a referigerated trailer. They're desiel powered, and will drop and hold the temp at -20 (+/-3*) even in this heat. Not only that they will heat when its cold. Of course first I gotta get the car out of the garage...
  23. Hoiw big is the Earth? Do you mean thick or edge to edge?
