  1. if you want a nice looking weld do not use flux core wire-use gas .i would get some scrap metal of the same kind you will be welding and practice first.you be to know if your wire speed is too fast-or you have the amps too high
  2. youcan tee in a fuel pressure gauge before the fpr and test it.its standard bosch specs-around 32 psi idle-it will climb with boost.if it sat for seven years it probably has plugged injectors-the gas back in those days did not have all the injector cleaner it has now.car will never make full power with clean injectors.while you are it solder on new injector plugs.i have the original oem nissan book for that somewhere.i finally gave up and went to megasquirt.
  3. i had a hernia strangle my intestines when i was 20.i didnt know what it was(it hurt like hell) and stayed in bed for 2 days.went to the doctor-when he discovered it he called for an ambulance.when i woke up from surgery i had to cuts stitched up=1 for hernia and 1 for appendex.when i was 30 got another hernia-its not good to do clutch jobs on 10 spd road ranger truck trans when you weigh 135lbs.when i was 40 i went in for DOUBLE hernia repair.the doctor stitched something up too tight and killed 1 of my testicles.just some of the many reasons to keep auto repair as a hobby
  4. ran mine that way too.it worked better with that chinese 240sx intercooler i got off of ebay.i used 2 1/8" mandrel bends from summit.the cold side i used some aluminum bends i got from recalled i/c pipes from ford diesels when i used to be a dealer tech.i like the price of free
  5. i have an old rear disc conversion on back of my 77 that uses 2 piston willwood calipers on 84 300zx rotors.the rear brakes allways had a bad squeek with the willwood pads.switched to porterfield r4s on back and squeek went away.for fluid i use oem ford fluid.its dot 3 but a very high boiling point.never had a problem at thunderhill.tried the old castrol lma but boiled it.front brakes are 4 piston toyota with the .8" spacers and 84 300zx front rotors.on track days i use porterfield r4 in front but switch out to napa asbestos pads for street.car has been tortured at the track(thunderhill, infineon, laguna) and brakes always work.i like using standard oem style pads for everyday use because they are easier on the rotors.running down a freeway off ramp at 100mph or so is no problem even with the asbestos napa pads-just dont do it too many times in 10 minutes or so.
  6. i have been playing with a 2960cc l28 motor for awhile -megasquirt+ all the usual stuuf needed to make a turbo run.the only reason stick with it is because a collected parts over the years for this-before the ls based chevy motors were around.if i was to do it again i would just get a ls 6 liter chevy truck motor and do some minor mods and run it.most of the time when v8 is swapped into the z the added weight(not much) ends up on the rear axle.i am not exactly a hardcore gm guy-i used to be a ford dealer technician.but finding articles in hot rod mags about a 450hp+ v8 that came from an auto wrecker for under $4k (total with minor bolt on mods)and knowing what kind of ft/lbs torque it would make(what you need for that slam you back feeling) i wouldnt mess with a jap motor again.hp doesnt move the car-its ft/lbs of torque.if a guy with a late model vette getsa jump on you at a light and you have a highly boosted jap motor the vette will score at least 2 or 3 and probably 5 car lengthes on you before you get you turbo what ever spooled up.v8 = heavy-i can easily curl a 5.0 ford block if i grab it by the main caps.i have to drag a l28 block to move it.the only problrm with chevy ls type engine is the price of transmission to hook to it.
  7. i used to be a ford dealer tech.that v10 should work after it gets some cams.last 3 valve mod motor i saw apart the cams were on a tube with the lobes pressed on.so if you were very creative you might be able to solve the cam problem yourself.the ford svo guys did build a v10 mustang once.the problem with ford modular engine series is the ohc heads make for a tall motor that is not as tightly packaged as a ohv cam-in-block motor.but go for it-this is all about being creative.
  8. i run porterfield r4 on track.but on the street i just use some pads from napa for a toyota truck.no squeeking and the pads sre easy on the rotors.the extra size of the pads will soak up more heat.i have hit a 45 mph off ramp at 110+ and braked hard with the napa pads no problem.the problem comes from a constant use like a race track.even a short course like an autox will only need a normal use pad.
  9. thanks for the tips guys.computor is running xp with norton corporate edition anti-virus.the anti-virus seems to work well.it put up a warning not to click on a website link from a google search and doesnt seem to slow itself.but i have no spyware cleaning capabilities.so i will have to see what i can find
  10. if you can go out of the east side of yosemite and head north on hwy 395 and check out lake tahoe.there are some dumpy cheap old hotels on the west side of harvey's casino that arent bad -but arent good but doable to avoid expensive hotel.harrahs buffet on the top is good for dinner.problem with cali is expensive cost of living and high taxes.plus crowded cities and high crime in some places.the best places in cali arent known by tourists
  11. i know alot of you guys are more computor friendly than i am .i have 10 thumbs on a keyboard.i have this very nice laptop that my employer gave me to use becuase i am on the road-company emails.plus some software for cummins engine controls, sauer danfoss hydraulic drives and other stuff.+megasquirt and mapping software.any way while i have time to kill in motel rooms i websurf-and i am sure this thing is picking up alot of c#$p from the net.any suggestions as far as what works and is idiot proof?
  12. probably shot out a mojave.very cose to willow springs
  13. fords are harder to work on -i am really glad i am no longer a dealer tech.imagine doing that job on gm flat rate warrenty time-you would have been working half the day for free.
  14. good luck with your swap.you might want to consider running megasquirt on that to elimminate the ford efi harness.but if you do run the ford efi get the ford book called evtm.it is a very good wiring harness book that is used for dealer repars.i used to be a ford dealer tech.it can be ordered online from the company that sells it to ford.about a 5.4 dohc-it caant be a bad motor if ford put a supercharged version in the gt and the new supercharged shelby mustang.it just takes up alot of room.
  15. happy birthday mike.keep riding dirt-rocks are still better than idiots in suv's.so sre you getting shape for more dirt?how about a ride in baja?i am going this winter.probably a 600 mile 1 week ride
  16. there is an official attachment for that but i guess they didnt have a credit card to buy the proper tool on the net.
  17. i am getting rid of dizzy on my 81zxt motor because of 5 degree slop in timing gears showing up when checking timing.i modded a 90 tooth 81 zxt front crank wheel to a 30tooth and use a cherry gear tooth sensor.building cop coil bracket right now.i used to use 3 magnets in the flywheel.
  18. you can scrounge a dohc 5.4 out of a lincoln navigator.you would just need some bigger cams to make it wind up.engine isnt bad-its just expensive to work on and doesnt fit as easy when used for swapping.but hybird z is about creativity.if we wanted a cookie cutter car we would buy a subaru and buy parts from a magazine.
  19. Hey man, I was reading a random post about suspension parts for the z... and saw a post of yours, you said you had been testing a lot of different parts. I was just curious about what you are finally running. I really want a solid coil-over setup, i want adjustability for ride height as well as dampering. So any input on what you ended up sticking with would be most appreciated, including bushings and other suspension components!

    Thanks much!

  20. i bought 1 of those harbor freight trailers and did some minor mods and used it for a trailer for 2 stand-up jet skis.for 2 or 3 hundred you can beat it
  21. my girlfriend-ole lady of 15 years has 3 timeshare memberships with different companies.just got back from cabo .even though i am getting old(49) i would rather see younger women out by the pool rather than middle aged people (overweight and mundane) people out by the pool.i have heard there are some good areas in southern mexico on thepacific ocean side.the kind of places where the young back pack crowd goes to.or the kind of place that is undiscovered and will be the cool place 10 years from now.any suggestions?
  22. boat=bring out another thousand.one of my other motorized hobbies.at this time i am involved in building a new custom tunnel boat from molds up.i wish you luck with yours.if you have any outboard motor questions send a pm-i will be happy to help
  23. timing at 30 to 36 total on the highway should work.fan clutch would only be an issue in city driving.anything past 35 mph would be related to the radiator-or it could be just bugs in the ac condenser.i have a 77z with intercooler,ac,radiator but i havent ran it enough (its being worked on ) to tell if the ic will make it over heat.it got stays high 90s to low 100s here but its dry.
  24. out at b1?still too many stop signs-didnt notice any bridge problems
