  1. 2 stroke oil can get expensive but since i have a boat with a mercury high perf outboard i can tell you what good price for good oil is.i run penzoil full synthetic-its $25 a gallon.another good oil is yamaha bulk watercraft oil.the yamaha shops sell it for $15 a gallon.the boat is running redline full synth right now because i got 4 gallons when i bought the boat last winter.that stuff is $40 a gallon.most people dont know that mazda burns off some of the crankcase oil aand the oil should be checked every 500 miles.my dream motor in my z is a 20b 3 rotor turbo-the socal sand rail boys run these and get 600hp out of them.
  2. modesto-about an hour south of sacramento.giant new kaiser hospital just starting to open-hiring hasnt started yet.2 hours to laguna,1.5 to sears point,2.5 to thunderhill.downside-e$pensive real estate compared to rest of usa.mucho taxes and restrictive smog laws.suburban sprawl and bad traffic because people buy homes out here and commute to the bay area.but its kind of centrally located-you can drive to yosemite, tahoe, sac or the bay area fast.winter kind of sucks for 2 monthes -it stays grey and foggy and about 40 degrees.but finding a house with space for a shop at 300k will be tough but might be possable with the recent real estate slump.my neighborhood has 1200 to 1400 sq/ft houses runnning in the $350k range.i want to move out of cali myself-to many taxes and too much traffic.
  3. try weighing the bmw -i heard they were heavy.motor mucho expensive to work on.my favorite low buck z is a 240 with l28 flat top block and 82-83 zx trans.use the round to 240 carbs and early head.and a 3.90 r200. very simple and cheap.
  4. i showed up at an autocross with my z running the open track day setup.no good-but i amused everybody.i couldnt get enough heat into the tires and the suspension was too stiff.it was run on a very old airport on concrete.the concrete was in poor shape.i would have done better on my street tires and disconnecting the sway bar.
  5. i saw some in a later model 2.3l ford ranger that kind of look like they might fit -but i havent scrounged 1 up to see.
  6. what some east coast guys forget is that you can find a car here with no rust or just surface rust in places like the battery tray-no major repair needed.cars in the central valley of california dont rust.
  7. i ride that road from the valley thru del puerto canyon 2 or 3 times a year-it would be cool to have a z meet up there.or at the junction at mines & del puerto?i have had my z on it but usually ride my yamaha fz1
  8. i have a yamaha fz1-same type of bike-a naked sport bike.i am 5'11" and the thing that gets to me is the pegs being up high so it can lean very low into turns.i can only ride about 60 miles at a time.best bet is if the bike has a centerstand put the bike up on it and sit on it for 20 minutes or so.my legs feel to crunched up at the knees.i am thinking about trading for a bmw r1200gs.its kind of a 2 wheeled suv.but it has 3 different seats -each seat with adjustments.the handle bars and windscreen adjust.i bought the fz1 becuase the cycle mags liked it back in 2002.i did some carb work and a pipe and got 130hp at the wheel.its basically spoiled me about my z car because it accelerates so hard i know i can spend mucho $ on the z and still never catch it.
  9. very interesting reading .i live in central california 80 miles east of sanfrancisco.its a valley with agriculture and crowded suburban sprawl.i have allergies bad-have to get shots.but i grew up here.i am looking at moving out of here to somewhere less crowded .it used to be nice here but now its just a big traffic jam.
  10. 20+ years ago i got an as (2 year) degree in electronics but didnt stay with it because i wasnt big on writing software.went into auto repair because thats how i paid my way through college and i always had work.i would say you need a good full size lab scope for this project .the fluke is a very good field test instrument but its easier with a big picture.if you need any ideas on oem junk yard sensors pm me.on my ms install i used a cherry industrial hall effect sensor and magnets in my flywheel.good luck and keep trying.
  11. megasquirt works very well BUT-you should be very good with electronics and have a very good working knowledge of automotive efi systems before attempting an install.i have a as(2 year) degree in electronics, have ase certified master auto technician and work as a ford dealership tech.i installed mine while upgrading the whole car as part of a plan of attack to get the car to 21st century oem car standards.the install is clean but i probably have 10x the amount of time i spent on the car studying on the internet.some people buy ms because it is cheap.the ecm was cheap but the project adds up when you consider what needs to be upgraded to insure that it will work correctly.
  12. i have a turbo l28 z .the only advantage after the car is running is fuel mileage if you use the car for a daily driver.i just did a bunch of work on the car because i have saved a bunch of parts up.a car with lots of torque is more fun to drive= v8.i am dreaming of a ford 302 with afr heads and mechanical full roller valve train.with 5.4" rods.something that will rev to 8000 rpm.i like the sound-and motor that revs like my sportbike.
  13. i have the toyota large 4x4 calipers in front with 84 300zx rotors and willwood 2 piston calipers in back with 84 300 zx rear rotors.on track i use the r4 in front no problem.but i dont use those on street.i use normal off the shelf pads.i switch the pads while i am installing the slicks.for the rear i use the r4s and leave them in all the time.car can be abused heavily on the track-i outbraked a few cars running into turn 10 at thunderhill.the r4 front pads last about 4 track days.the front rotrs are drilled.
  14. used to have a smog license untill last march.dont need it where i work but but i am renewing it soon.my car is a 77 with 81 turbo swap.it gets sent to test only every time.and it doesnt run good with stock ecm.registered it somewhere else.the part about having pre 75 cars being stock is a pain.if you really piss off a leo you are screwed-he will want to know how your car run so fast.so if you have a hot rod keep a low profile.
  15. thanks for the post-need to do that to my factory a/c.it blows cold but i need more volume of air flow.
  16. i got a selection from motorsport.figured i needed .240 lash pads .went on courtesy nissan website and ordered the .240's-still no lash pads.motorsport wants $4.50 a piece.
  17. right now i am looking for a bunch of mixed sizes just to check the wipe pattern with.i tried ordering 10 different sizes from courtesy nissan but they cancled the order.
  18. the reason the pay is so high is because of the cost of living in that area.i would guess that 1/2 of the force lives out in the valley by my house.california is a tough job market if you are short on a college education because of excess immigration .but if you dont have some kind of 4 year degree or cant get into the local trade unions an entry level government job is a good place to start.but the police is probably the toughest route.i have been working on cars at dealerships for 23 years and hate every minute of it.
  19. ordered 10 of the thicker pads to set a head made with some parts i have had laying around.got email saying they are out with no estimated time of arrival.does anybody have a bunch of lash pads of various sizes i could borrow/buy/rent?came i have has about .540 lift and back side of cam was gound down to get the lift so i need .200 and thicker to try.
  20. is the car driving?you can bring it by-i got my ms tuned up well -but it runs off of a innovate motorsports wide band 02 and the af chart.it took me a couple of weeks of part time fiddling to get the car to run exactly to the af chart.but the lx1 gauge follows what i programmed exactly.
  21. do any of the members of this website goto burningman?i dont quite subscribe to the cult mindset but i like to go check out the theme camps at night while chugging on straight tequila-the good stuff.or piss them off by cooking some steaks on the bbq.nothing like watching city folk try to camp in the desert.my girlfriend hates camping.eveen though i have a shower in my van.for those of you that havent heard of this goto http://www.burningman.com
  22. back to master the machine that bit you-a real man
  23. best way is to goto local pick&pull and study what fans are on different cars.as cars age and change owners parts get scrambled.the radiator might be in a different spot.or you could have the wrong fan or fan clutch-or both.
  24. capri's were around in the 70's.first engine was a 2000 ohc-later 2.3 or 2.8v6.the interiors kind of fell apart in these cars.
  25. i have noticed on pinks contestants working on cars with no jackstands.the local drag strip gets picky on street car night if a car runs faster than 12 seconds.its rol bar time.motorcycle riders have to run full leathers.
