  1. make sure and run a tap through head bolt holes and clean with brake cleaner and compressed air.the head wont torque even with out good prep.you can get arp head studs from summit-probably not much more tham a set of oem bolts.when you are torqueing down the oem bolts they seem kind of spongy.if you try to use old bolts they break where there are rust pits on the unthreaded shaft of the bolt.
  2. trying to open latest version of megatune on old 1995 ibm laptop.i get this error message saying it needs mfc42.dll file to open configurator.i read on msefi that my laptop my need internet explorer updated?i am not a computor geek-i fix cars for a living.playing with files drives me nuts.car has been running on a rough tune for a year or so.it blew up the old motor so i built a new stroker bottem end.need to get ready for dyno runsi have been using a very old version of megatune to work on it.

  4. i think the boat needs my other l28et motor in it.
  5. before i put the turbo engine in my 77 i gutted the cat,put new injectors and injector connectors on.rebuilt a distributor with a better advance curve.ran 2.5' exhaust behind the cat.car ran very well-out drag raced a 94 camaro z28 with auto trans.remember to start with the basics before buying aftermarkit parts.back in the day these cars were made the gasoline didnt have injector cleaner in it-so the chances of your car having injectors flowing 60% to 90% of total flow are good.a megasquirt system with new injectors,a mild cam and good exhaust would make these cars run well.
  6. at thunderhill-i passed a ferrari f355 by setting up on inside running into turn 10.hit the brakes late and outbraked him.turn 10 is a 90 degree left like a residential corner -but has a long straight leading in .i was running about 110 mph.
  7. the sand rail guys in southern california use northstar motors with turbos-the have performance parts for them.
  8. i have an unofficial shop in my garage.but i dont work on just z.currently there is an atv in for service .and a wakeboard boat getting some electrical work finished up.so stop by sometime

  10. my cousin used to have 1st gen rx7.when the points would go out she would wash the motor down with gas by flooding it.no compression then.it had alot of miles on it.i used to put a little atf in the spark plug holes.the have a little pump the sucks off some of the crankcase oil to lube the rotor seals.oil shoud be checked every 500 miles.the high perf guys run a little 2 stroke dirt bike oil in the gas when the pump is removed.
  11. most people just use the handheld gps for calbration checks on the installed speedo.some digital speedos require you to hit a set button and drive exactly 1 mile and hit button again.that sets the pulse per mile in the speedo.high performance boats use gps based speedos-but boats dont need odometer.the speedo in my z was calibrated on a chassis dyno-i pulled a bunch of drive gears at pick&pull.
  12. new trucks -lots of horsepower vs 70's trucks but they havent caught up with brakes,axles,trans.american truck builders are getting outsold by toyota & nissan who are now building full size trucks.seems like the american trucks keep getting built crappier every year.i used to work as a ford dealer tech but i wouldnt buy a ford.
  13. looks kind of tacky but i got a sea contanier for storage and put commercial prefab warehouse shelving in it.very secure when locked and freed up my garage space.

  17. when i used to smog used cars at local ford dealer i failed a few for aftermarkit parts-all parts mounted to car have to have a bar exemption sticker somewhere around the engine compartment.so if the car has 3 parts(cold air kit.header,etc) should have 3 stickers.i pissed the used car manager off because i failed a very heavily modded 5.4l lightning pick up -list of mods is too many to type.it wouldnt communicate with the obd2 on the smog machine and was running rich also.the idiot bought it at the dealer auction.as far as the ref on swaps-i have run 2 cars through-my z and a 84 el camino i put a chevy tpi motor in-they passed first time at the ref and got thier door stickers for the swap.you really need to know completely the theory behind how this stuff works if you want to make a car pass and look like it was assembled at a factory and not hacked up.

  19. my l28 turbo with megasquirt,ic,t3/t4 turbo is getting about 26 on the road-but about 15 in town.i think its the driver.according to innovate motorsports wide band 02 my a/f is running about 14.0 on freeway-could be run leaner but its in a rough state of tune and needs more datalog work.the wide band is the running the ms right know from the air/fuel table i programmed.advance is about 36 btdc at high vacuem cruise.the cam is still pulling 12" of vacuem at cruise speeds-70 mph.
  20. being a ford tech-sho was a killer engine.the rumors at ford tech schools were that the engine could run to 9 or 10,000 rpm no problem.my machinist has 1 in some kind of salt flat car making 500+ hp with lot of mods and a holley 1050 carb.the trans you needed was from a v6 aerostar-very rare van with 5 speed and v6.some of the newer rangers have 3.0 vulcan engine with a 5 speed but its a mazda trans.newer sho had a 3.4 v8-that would sound good reving up.if i didnt have so much invested in l28et motors i would be looking at something that likes to rev-the l28 doesnt have the cylinder head flow like a 4 valve motor.when you are on a curvy road playing sometimes a corner comes up and you dont have room for another gear-just more revs.
  21. as a disgruntled 20 year ford tech-you will soon learn what warrenty time on flat rate means if you work in a dealership-nothing like working for free.know anything about the ford dealer in henderson?they have an ad for techs on needtechs.com website.
  22. in the coast range mountains in central ca there are lotsa of wild pig.locals use pit bulls to track them and shoot them after the dogs corner them.usually with 44 mag pistol.problem is the pigs dont move much in the day.if you see 4x4 trucks with vented boxes in back those are dog kennels.my pick of a rifle would be a good 30-06 or .308-these shoot fast and flat.

  24. did a 400 mile 3 day baja ride -in a good week in baja you can eat real food(fresh shrimp & lobster)beer and still lose weight.this is a sunrise over gonzaga bay
  25. the high dollar sand rail guys in socal use these-600hp easy.i have heard a na 3 rotor at thunderhill in a 3rd gen rx7-sounds like a f1 car.an engine i have always lusted after.should fit in a z no problem.
